A lie is a lie is a lie.

Is it a loving thing to lie?

Do you enjoy being lied to?

Are you willing to accept the justifications of a lie that someone presents to you when they get caught in the lie?

Is there any justification for lying?

Wouldn't it be absolutely fucking awesome to share life with those that are truthful?

What are we teaching by example to children?

My observation and experience is that you get in trouble as a child for lying and usually receive some form of punishment for doing so. Adults on the other hand, while punishing a child for lying, are free of punishment when they lie to the child. So, the child has something to look forward to when they reach adulthood, lying without punishment, though obviously the consequences aren't avoided.

The idea that a lie can create happiness, joy, etc, etc is probably the most disturbing thing about the while lying to your children about Satan, ooops Santa. Is that an idea you really are interested in teaching by example to children?
You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.

So your Jewish/Romany/black/etc neighbours are hiding in your attic and the Gestapo are at your door asking if you know where they are....
The loving thing to do is lie.

If you're planning a surprise event for someone you care for and they get curious.
The loving thing to do is lie.

If someone you care for is about to undergo a serious medical procedure and they may spend a long time building up anxieties.
To reduce or remove that stress period, the loving thing to do is lie.

I could go on but you get the drift.
Life is not as black and white as we'd prefer.

You give them paper & paint, and tell them what they create is beautiful - you don't tell the truth, that it's just an unrecognisable bunch of dribbly splodges. Of course all lies aren't harmful.

Maybe it's because as soon as my kids found out I was mummy christmas, I also told them some of the background to where all this started from.....like over on this thread
sanctumzone.co.uk/forum/Members-Chat-Are...-of-santa-claus.html
and why christmas trees didn't start with Prince Albert....but far earlier when pine saplings were brought into a home and hung upside down next to the fire to help kill winter bugs. The kids hate it when I put our tree upside down!

All I know is whether it be santa or the tooth fairy, my kids have a healthy cynicism about life in general and question everything and don't take things at face value. They have finely honed radars for bull shit!

Clearly, i agree with oi jane and feather.
There are few absolutes in life.
Lying is not one of them.
The important things are motives, intent and reponsibility.
Sometimes, lying is absolutely the right thing to do.
The web is not negatively affected at those points.
The web is negatively affected when people act without impeccability.
We do not control everything and our kids will live a long time away from our eyes and ears.
A wise parent embraces that and prepares them well.

plus, that kid that tells you santa is dead and nobody believes him. its a great introduction to conspiracies.

You do not have to answer any question with a lie, you can choose not to answer the question though.

If people are so willing to lie, then by what right do they complain about being lied to by the government, MSN, etc?

Ironic when many call it the 'truth movement' and yet are willing to lie and complain about being lied to.
You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.
