Ebikes used to be extortionate ,
And not the best looks wise but they were and are amazing for anyone who might require one .
There's an old guy who I sometimes see doing his shopping on one
The motor and battery are very discreet
The major downside is confusion over the law
Many people think you can't ride them on roads others think you shouldn't ride them on cycle paths
As rule of thumb if you would ride a normal bike on a route it's ok for Ebikes
But don't quote me on that .

To some extent they are becoming less popular amongst able bodied cyclists who soon learn a good road bike is faster
And easier to ride and costs bit less
Notice how most Ebikes are designed around hybrids or MTB frame setups
This is possibly down to the fact they came about off the back of the craze for MTB bikes
And nowadays most people buying a bile chat to staff in a good bike shop
Who point out that for most people a MTB is complete overkill and more hard work than a roady or hybrid
Over smooth to medium terrain

Anyone could pick up a hybrid or full road style bike and be doing 15mph for miles on end
On a fat tyred heavier MTB that would be 12 mph if your lucky for about ten miles
And on an ebike with assistance from the motor less still so if battery died you've a slog home
But if your a casual user or not as fit they are great things
Everything has a a place a road spec bike won't a valid replacement for 74yr old with arthritis who's ebike has died for example
And an ebike isnt what a 25yr old wants to replace his trail eating MTB
Or full spec roady .

www.gov.uk/electric-bike-rules

Reading that so long as they can only do 15mph on motor (beyond that pedalled) then they're same as a push bike.

Full agreement from me re mtbs and the road. Why would anyone want to lug all the weight of suspension around on the road?
Swapping tyres for summat thinner with a more rounded profile will help but you still have the weight...And them cheap leccy MTBs are fricking heavy.

Leccy bikes like the Giant here are a different class imho. Ms knob got hers when we were on Exmoor cos there was a steep two mile hill between our home and her work. Being designed as a leccy bike, the Giant is no heavier than a mid range mtb. It has road wheels and tyres which help and no daft suspension. It is power assist rather than full electric drive. That means the battery lasts longer. It also stops you being lazy as you do have to pedal for it to work. But oh boy does it work.
She only ever has it 'on' up the hills. The rest of the time it's rode as a normal bike. Imho, that makes it about perfect for those who want a commuter and a bit of exercise.

Edit: Yes they are fully road legal. The fully leccy driven bikes do have a legal limit of 15mph. But you can obviously go considerably faster than that downhill, coasting...so it's a bit of a moot point. Ones like the Giant have no enforceable limit because how can they prove you weren't just pedalling really hard?

No, that's not the one she's got, Andy. Hers has a little better quality parts, has full gears etc.
But
The electric system looks the same. It's the same battery arrangement and front wheel motor so I'd wager that one is just 'pedal assist' like Ms knobs. The control panel on hers is a proper screen though. That one looks like about a 3/4 year old model to my eye. It'd be a good buy at that £500 if you could vouch the battery sound. But sadly, you can't. So you could soon be spending 3/400 quid.
This is the problem with them second hand. You could probably find that as old stock for £750-£850.

I also wonder why anyone would buy a cheap suspension MTB? There is no way on earth I'm doing even a 6 foot drop off on a bike that has yer average cheap MTB suspension. You'd be asking to go to A&E (heck they even have stickers saying, DO NOT JUMP ) So, they are useless off road. They are equally useless, on the road. So what's the point? The point I guess is that you can go, hey check my full susser....But anyone who was likely to be impressed would know they were looking at a Halfords 70 quid special....and wouldn't be impressed...so....um...

It's a fail on every level. A marketing masterstroke.

Sadly, that lack of knowledge/research leads folk into buying with their eyes innit. They see springs and stuff and think wow, that's a lot for the money. They don't have the info to realise that they could get a far better rigid for the money, that would be a better bike in every way. Heck, I cut my teeth doing drop offs and jumps on a rigid.

Don't get me wrong. I like sorted full sussers. I had a very very nice GT framed one that I built with quality parts. Z1 drop offs and a Fox shock. It sucked up everything. Even that was useless when you pointed it uphill on a road though....Boing....Boing :)

Cheap cable disc brakes......there's another one. Work no better than a V brake but add loads of weight.
Heck, they look swish though innit. If you don't know what you are looking at...

Most entry level handrails come with shocks designed for rough trails
What do people expect to find on a bike that cost £99

Don't they realise that all that weight on front shocks is held on quarter inch steel rod and held in place on the last threads of a bolt ,
most people don't need shocks of anykind
And those that do need ones that are fit for purpose
Marketing gimmics issued with a warning not suitable for jumping or stunts lol
No shit .

Not joking btw about the load bearing part inside shocks
I wince when I see kids launching themselves off stuff on cheap mtbs

See the wee nut underneath them that's the rod it's like a coach bolt attached to spring inside top half of fork
There's a retaining nut on last threads that takes weight
The bolt outside you can see is to hold forks together

Most makes under £150 aren't even worth getting fixed a repair can cost £100
And usually it's just an oil bath and or cleanup and re lube you can do at home .
No special tools required and don't hit the bolt with a hammer as some folks do to free them , you will risk snickering the threads
And it doesn't need hitting
A suitable socket set or spanner some lube and a sponge
Good as new in no time or chuckem and buy new set fit those yourself aswell buy a cheap pipe cutter to fix headset size using old ones as template.

Here's the rule of dub for anyone buying a NEW mountain bike.
If you have less than 6/700 to spend, go for the best frame and running kit you can afford. The front fork will likely be shit and more hassle than it's worth. It will be shit Suntour or at best base level Marzocchi or Rock Shox. Which are shit. Often dangerously shit because they give you a false sense of security. If you want suspension that does what it should, it will cost....a lot.
So buy the best frame you can with good running gear and get saving for a decent set of sus forks.
