Let's see, take a thought, add another thought to it, your thought has not doubled, it's simply expanded by any size.
In addition to that, (no pun intended) if you have two houses, semi detached, if you knock out the dividing wall, you have one house.

So in that case 1 +1 = 1.
2 becomes 1, adding things together actually reduces the number.

But the sum 1+1=2 doesn't involve any houses or thoughts.

It is a simple numeric sum involving integers.

And 1+1=2 cannot mean anything other than what it means.

it's an illusion, the truth is you're not adding them together, you're counting them, if you actually add items together they become fewer.

Increasing a value only increases a value, an amount plus an amount does not create two amounts, it just expands the amount.
This is where my bottom line would be if it existed.

You will have to explain that one more :)
increasing a value only increases a value, an amount plus an amount does not create two amounts, it just expands the amount.

So you have double the amount.

Doesn't sound like less to me.

Ok I'll try and explain tbh it's not easy to explain without a scenario.

For example let's say there is a shoal of fish, if you find another shoal of fish, you count two shoals.

If you add them together the two shoals become one so 1 + 1 = 1 (larger) .

So the shoal has increased in size but the number of shoals is fewer.
This is where my bottom line would be if it existed.

Yes I agree with you but I wasn't talking about fish or houses or anything else.

Just the sum.

1+1 will always = 2

Which in math notation = 2.

If not the sum is false and not true.

LoL you asked me to explain and I did.

Right now you explain please 1 what +1 what = 2 what.

'Plus' means addition, addition is abbreviated to 'add' or +.

So if you add a drop of water to a drop of water, how may drops of water do you have.

it's one, if you're just talking symbolically then that's a code, I'm talking outwith a code, when corporations unite two becomes one, when you add £1 + £1 you have £2.

That's one £2 not two £2, I can't really see how 1+1 does really equal 2, it merely unites two into one greater. :conf:
This is where my bottom line would be if it existed.

Really 2 - 1 = 2

Because if you have one lot of (2), you then take one away from your lot you have then made two (1) (1).

The more you remove from your lot without adding them to other lots the more numbers you have.

If you start with (99) you take (1) away you have (98) in your lot and (1) outwith, if you carry on you get 99 (1)'s so instead of having one large lot you now have many more small ones, (99) x (1) = (99)......(99) ÷ (1) = 99(1)'s

99(1)'s is more than one (99) as you have 99 lots, not one lot of (99).

You could have one large container containing (99) or you could keep subtracting (1) and have 99 small containers of (1), which is more units that one (99).

This means if it was cows, instead of having one field of (99) cows you'd be subtracting (1) cow at a time, if you did not add them to those already subtracted from the herd to form another herd, you'd then need 99 places to store cows, so you'd have a greater number of cows to attend to, as they have been split up into (1)'s you'd have to even keep some in other places as you'd run out off space to keep them all, unless you added them all together into one herd, which means (99) X (1) = (1) lot of 99

It's no different than breaking up a gold watch into 99 pieces, and keeping the bits in other places from one another, even if it's (99) bits of watch you still only have one watch, but by dividing it you've created (99) items, that's more than one. so again (99) x (1) = (1)
This is where my bottom line would be if it existed.

Asked my eight year old nephew what truth was and he said it's " The real deal". I'm gonna ask him stuff more often.

But you are still conceptualising the interger.

As a stand alone sum, without houses, gold, fish the sum is truth.

1+1=2

I see blue's point and imo he's ostensibly right.
Maths is an abstraction. It's a way of describing things. That's all it is really.
The petals of a flower may indeed follow the fib sequence but it's a flower. Not a series of numbers.
On this basis i wouldn't regard any maths as truth. An inadequate but sometimes helpful means of decribing truth at best.
Especially considering the antics of mathemiticians.

Truth imv is what is (the thread title was close :) ) When the bullshit and bollox are removed, what remains is truth. In anything.
"laws are unenforceable if the majority break them."-humanspirit,
"avoid the concept of an ambassador for truth altogether"-gilly.

 Say's Hardy
But then that's only something that exists within a code, why must you adhere to that code, and use that code as an example of 'truth'.

As soon as you move out of the code and into the practice of counting gold, fish, houses or whatever the code is broken, thus is 'your' truth.
This is where my bottom line would be if it existed.

One measure plus one measure does not create two measures, it only creates a larger measure, if you take a large measure and subtract a small measure from it you then have two measures.

So using that code 1 + 1 = 1 and 1 - 1 = 2

The mathematical code you use is broken, thus the truth you point at is not true in absolution.
This is where my bottom line would be if it existed.
