I received a letter from my car insurance broker. They claimed that I had 2 years no claims and used this to calculate my premium. I emailed them today saying that they made a mistake a few years back and that I actually have ( I did have 20 years no claims but due to not having car insurance for two years I lost it!) 4 or 5 years no claims. Also I would like to protect the no claims discount.

I get an email back from them saying that they made a mistake and that I do in fact have 4 years no claims bonus. Also there is no change in the price quoted as they had been giving me extra discount anyway. How can another 2 years of no claims equate to zero change in the premium? It just doesn't add up.

No, it doesn't add up does it. Extra discount? What are they on about? That doesn't sound like an insurance broker!!! :D
Have you tried getting a quote from elsewhere with the 4 years?

I've tried various comparison sites and Admiral also. Admiral were the most expensive at about £2,500 on a £600 vectra! None of the comparison sites come close to the broker either. So I'll be staying with them. I just have to wait a year to be able to protect my no claims. I use to be able to insure skyline GTR's and Impreza STi's for peanuts. Those days are long gone now that I have a medically restricted license and fuck all no claims.

£2500!!! I need a lie down!
So your current broker it is then. Have they given you any details on this claimed existing discount and why two years extra NCD can't be added to it?

They haven't expanded on why two more years ncd hasn't dropped the price. I'm sure that they make it up as they go along. One thing about brokers is do they actually pass all the money on. The paperwork they give to me always just looks like photocopies. The question is, who is the bigger scammer. The broker or the insurers.

In autumn i had to arrange public liability and van insurance so i looked at a lot of options for both. The prices varied massively from broker to broker but there was actually very few insurers. Different brokers using the same insurer could present you with very different deals. Makes me think that a large part of the rip off is through brokers.

I think it'd certainly be worth asking for some actual detail on why the ncd isn't reflected in your new premium.

Not sure if you've noticed, but virtually everything is a racket. That's what happens when you run the world as a giant moneybox.

I got stung on my car insurance recently as I've not got any no claims. I've been a lead driver on another policy.... which equates to having fuck all no claims.
So even though I was the lead driver on another policy and made no claims on that, it means nothing. Even though I've been insured in the past and built up a few years no claims, it makes no difference as for reasons only known to insurers the 'bonus' is only valid for 2 years.
Shower of robbing bastards.
Bring on the driverless cars.... will hopefully fuck the motor insurance industry off all together.
I think the highest quote I saw on a comparison site was something like 25k. :woo: Not sure what extras you get thrown in with that... but I decided it wasn't worth spending that on a 150quid car!

Makes my £2,500 seem quite reasonable. I had better take them up on their splendid offer before they change their minds not!

I spent a whole day tinkering around on comparison sites trying to get mine down.... started off around 2.5k and I managed to get it down to 1.3k. Which is still ludicrous... but they've got you by the balls. Either you take it up or you don't drive... or you do, and get permanent hassle off the dibbles.
It's worth shopping around considering the amount of money that you can save....
