I've played a bit of golf, and I've had a hole in one before, but I'm not a big fan of the game, certainly not of watching it.

But there's a very simple reason why it's popular. It's a sport you can play if you're in no kind of physical shape to play any other sport. That's why golf is so much more popular than tennis in America.

I don't understand it either, so I try to avoid it. Me and Mr P ended up having a last minute weekend break to the New Forest and the only place we could book was an expensive golfing hotel. It was well poncy!

And they "earn" squillions.

My springer spaniel, Ruby-dog, finds golf balls. I've got about 5 to 6 THOUSAND of the things out in the shed. Really. :D

Tiger Woods signed contracts worth $60 million with Nike and Titleist before he'd made a single professional golf shot.

To be fair, he did do quite well for them later on.

Yeah you can pretty much play golf professionally until you're a pensioner. Tom Watson nearly won the British Open the other year (arguably the world's biggest golf tournament) at the age of 60. AFAIK, Tiger is still the world's highest earning sportsman. This is one of my favourite statistics to quote:

johnpilger.com/videos/the-new-rulers-of-the-world
Golfer Tiger Woods was paid more to promote Nike than the entire workforce making the company’s products in Indonesia received.

My step father recently took up golf, he's 63 and never played in his life, he wished he done it sooner. He's roped my mum into giving it a bash too lol They watch it on tv which is beyond me, half my family are big on golf always have been we have a but n Ben from the 60's up the east coast of Scotland, it was bought to be near st andrews, oh a butnben is a very small holiday home. My mum owns it so I'll get it next, but I'm really not into golf, maybe I'll take it up when I'm a pensioner lol

I don't play it, but I know a few fanatics, but probably one of the main reasons I never got into golf was because you cook here on a golf course, most of the time when golfing is best, not my idea of fun

Well, you scotts did invent the game Dawney

I've played quite a bit in my time. The family home was on the edge of a golf course and we used to regularly hop over the fence for a quick round of 7 holes for some exercise after tea...weather permitting, which was quite a lot in those days :O

I suppose that's why I'm classified as a fairweather played! :chuckle: Mind you Mark Twain did say about the game "A good walk ruined"

It's one of those sports that until you try it, you can't see the point. There's a lot more to it than an oversized game of snooker.
