The President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, launched on Thursday a bill that seeks to toughen restrictions against pedophiles as part of an agenda of measures introduced in July against child sexual abuse.
The bill proposes to extend the current 10-year period in which a person who abused a child can not request removal of his criminal record, President Piñera said at an event in Santiago.
The new rule seeks to "tighten restrictions against those who sexually abuse against our children," said Piñera.
The legislation is part of an agenda of measures that the president announced in July and includes the hardening of prison conditions for accused sex offenders and an aggravating factor in sentencing for abusers.
Also determined to establish an electronic bracelet that will use those who are committing a sexual offense, and a record of pedophiles that prevent people with a history of child abuse minors working nearby.
"It's a real agenda we have done for our children, to increase penalties and restrict benefits to those who threaten and sexually abuse against minors," said Piñera.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, reports of sexual abuse of children under 14 increased by 22% this year in Chile.
Accusations have occurred primarily in schools and high income against Catholic priests, which has caused much media frenzy.
