not ashamed to say i actually do cry sometimes - its the little acts of kindness and compassion that have kept this world ticking over and increasingly they seem to be being legislated out of existence or turned into monetized concerns. Charities that start off with fantastic grass roots ideals become money making behemoths more interested in having a political presence than actually physically doing something to help those their cause is supposed to be about.

the propaganda spewed out against the poor and the fucked up 'austerity' measures leave people with less empathy - and yet as ever it is those with the least to give who give the most - perhaps because in having so little they still appreciate a little and are not so attached to 'things'

It does feel like a battle sometimes but there are inspirational individuals and things we can all do if we are open to them :)

But if you'll take trash food then you won't buy from the stores. Think about that.. Mr Iceland won't get the lions share of profits from that tomato and that shelf stacker might lose his minimum wage job because my god if you just wait they'll have to throw it all out eventually. Nobody would pay and mr Iceland will be in the slums with poor scoliosis Scott who just lost is job.
Is that what you want Thor? Rich and poor people eating rats together roasted over a trash can fire.

The shocking thing is that what batou posts in jest and as satire, many a Fail reader or FOX News viewer says in earnest.

Actually Iceland is one of the better shops. The owner is a decent bloke and staff are paid more than any other chain of supermarkets. I doubt if the boss of Iceland wanted this to go ahead. Bad publicity too. The DPP are the bastards here.

Well then this benevolent Mr Iceland should be voicing his abhorrence at these charges, and hence turn the bad publicity around.

Meanwhile, there's a petition here asking the CPS to drop the case...

Mainstream supermarkets will never change as long as people still go there, and give them their money! If everyone, or at least the majority, boycotted them, they would soon start paying attention.

The reason they flourish is because although many people complain, they still go and give the very same corrupt companies their money! Talk about doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result!

I think If people supported their independent, small shops for example, big business would not have such a dominance, and the power would slide back to the ordinary person. At present, the power is with the Corporates.

Iceland food bin theft case dropped by CPS

The case against three men accused of stealing food from bins outside an Iceland store has been dropped by prosecutors.

Paul May, William James and Jason Chan were arrested in Kentish Town, north London, in October.

The men denied charges brought under the 1824 Vagrancy Act.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said Iceland had made representations that "affected our assessment of the public interest in prosecuting".

Following the case being dropped, Iceland founder and chief executive Malcolm Walker tweeted: "Delighted @cpsuk has agreed to drop the Kentish Town prosecution - though it's hardly the "Iceland Foods case" as we knew nothing about it!"
Mr Kipling cakes

Baljit Ubhey, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "This case has been reviewed by a senior lawyer and it has been decided that a prosecution is not required in the public interest.

"While the decision to charge was taken by the Metropolitan Police Service, a subsequent review of the case by the CPS did not give due weight to the public interest factors tending against prosecution."

The Met said it would not comment on the CPS's decision to drop the case.

Mr May, 35, Mr James, 23, and Mr Chan, 31, all of no fixed address, allegedly took tomatoes, mushrooms, cheese and Mr Kipling cakes from bins behind the store.

They were expected to say they had been "skipping" - a term used for taking food from a bin or skip that would otherwise go to waste.
'U-turn'

Following the case being dropped, Mike Schwarz from law firm Bindmans, who was representing the men, said: "We are pleased to note that the Crown have discontinued the case of our three clients- accused under the pre-Victorian Vagrancy Act of being in an enclosed premises.

"They planned to plead not guilty, arguing that they were not acting dishonestly - a defence we felt confident the court would agree with at this time of austerity, food banks, food waste and profligacy by supermarkets."

Mr Schwarz criticised the CPS for coming to a decision "so late... in the light of media exposure".

Earlier, Iceland issued a statement to say its staff did not call the police and the store had been trying to find out why the CPS believed it was in the public interest to pursue a case.

The supermarket said: "The store in question is next door to a police station. Iceland staff did not call the police, who attended on their own initiative.

"Nor did we instigate the resulting prosecution, of which we had no knowledge until the media reports of it appeared yesterday evening."

I hope every bin behind every supermarket has a queue from now on as this story has probably just made a lot of people aware of the free food available from the supermarket :)

it's quite shocking that the government are making people that desperate that they will eat food from bins

but to charge them with vagrancy for doing so takes the absolute

This case is sickening on all levels.

Throwing away perfectly good food must surely be an affront to any decent human being? :umm:

Why couldn't the CPA see the irony in considering persecuting three men whose only crime was saving food destined for the rubbish bin?

If anything, surely the persecution should be on the Supermarkets who have the temerity to throw away food in a world of starving people?

Everything is upside down (like so many things in Society) in this case.

This kind of confirms that the Law is there to help the rich.

Disgusting state of affairs all around!

So they hadn't actually charged them for taking the food, they'd basically charged them with trespass. Which is as I understand, a civil matter until it is 'aggravated'. Whereupon it becomes a criminal act

Vagrancy act?

Fucking big desperate

The same police force that killed Duggan and Tomlinson. The same Police force that I can categorically prove, ignore the actions of terrorists in Britain, so long as they are 'influential' enough......

Are trying to pursue convictions, under an arcane statute, of folk eating from bins....

Gentrification to the point of genocidal tendency is it then toffs of the Smoke?

Some folk may indeed go skipping out of government born desperation.
The majority of skippers I've met almost consider it a duty. I myself have done it because it's there to do. I have always strongly objected to our wasteful culture. I've always put my actions behind those words. Skipping, in this paradigm, along with scrapping, is imho a must for the savvy.

Have to say I've never eaten better than when I've been a skipper anorl ;)

I've never done it out of necessity as such but as soon as I was put on to the availability of free food I preferred it to the paid for equivalent for some reason :dunno:

i know

but it's ironic that some people struggle to eat and get charged for the pleasure , that was the point that i was making

i know people who make good living collecting and selling waste
