I have done it out of necessity before when homeless - skip diving for non food items is something I have done not out of necessity but because I loathe wastfulness and much prefer to reuse and upcycle others offcasts than buy new.
Sometimes, if you stand on the bottom rail of a bridge and lean over to watch the river slipping slowly away beneath you, you will suddenly know everything there is to be known.

In fairness to Iceland they do seem to be taking the "wtf is this pish, how did we get dragged into this?" approach.

I have a thing for chairs when it comes to skips. Particularly those bentwood beauties. At one point, I simply had a flat full of chairs so had to purge. Most went to the charity shop, but I still fondly remember them all, by name.

Yes you will :) I've also had champers stuff, cases of wine, spirits, Icke knows how many awesome kids toys and stuff.....
They don't just throw out food. They throw out stuff from every department. That's the big chains ofc. Sadly, they aren't so easy to do nowadays. Too many assholes I guess behaving like pigs when they were at it. Making a mess. Certainly, for some reason, the big chains took to properly closing off their skip areas. Some even now spoil food as a company policy  So those kind of pickings are fewer and further between now but in the day, you could live very well indeed off of skipping.
There are still good pickings to be had though. Even your average Spar will have a skip. Bakeries do too. ;)

It wasn't Champagne. It was Champagne stuff. Can't remember the Brand. And yes, I've had steak, salmon... Meat products are dodgy though. I would only be having them if I knew they'd literally just gone in. Most chains put their stuff out at fairly regular times for obv reasons. You lay in wait then go in when they put it out.

What can I say Scal? You really ought to give it a try. You'd be amazed what folk chuck out...

We'd even ask in shops that had 'perishables' if we could come and collect at 5pm, if they said no we'd be round the back by 10 past anyway :D

There was a butty shop on King St in Manchester (The street for expensive tat) and he'd gladly give us a bin bag or two of loaves and sarnies on bread we'd never heard of. Proper posh punk picnics they were :D

They aint dumb are they and as I said before, you can be very brazen. The key to it imho is to leave the place tidier than when you got there. The folks who's job it is to run the 'back end' appreciate that kind of thing ;) Like I also said, the old Safeway in Penzance guys used to wait for me and bring it straight to me...

I mentioned it before, but when I was on the bones of me arse (even more so than now) the kindly manager of my local 'Bakers Oven' went to great pains to make it clear to me that I was welcome to hang around the bins at about 5pm that day, when they were "made" to dump all the bread that hadn't sold that day.

Unfortunately, this establishment was recently taken over by 'Greggs' who I believe to a bit more hard-line on the issue. As has been said before though, it's individuals (like the kindly Manager way back) that make the difference.

As well those who take their jobs a little too seriously, ofc. :coffee:

I still find it hard to believe there was nowt else they could have been doing with their time...I'm just glad all that tax I've paid over the years isn't going to waste.

Canee read boy?
Did I or did I not just say that you have to be careful to make sure it's just gone in and leave it alone if you can't verify that? I am well aware of the risks....It's up to others to weigh them up for themselves. I myself have never got ill off of anything I have eaten from a bin. But then I tend to want to stay fit healthy and alive and make my decisions from that standpoint. Unless I'm arseholed, when it all goes out the window ;)

As I alluded too just now, you clearly haven't looked in that many bins ;)

EDIT: Also, you appeared to take issue with me saying that I haven't eaten better than when I've eaten out of skips. Dunno about you but I don't tend to be have enough fiat to buy steak everyday for example..I can't even recall ever buying a fillet steak....When I was skipping I pretty much always had a fridge, freezer and cupboards full of bloody nice food. Way better than I could have maintained through my ability to accrue fiat....
This is a rare example of a statement of fact.
So you can't logically take issue with the statement can you. As it pertains to my own experience, and not yours or anyone elses ;)

Ah, now I see your confusion. That's not what I said. I said I'd never eaten better iirc. By that I was referring to the day to day standard of me larder, as I've said
The best meal I've ever had? There's a question. I'll have to chew on that one for a bit. I'll cook you up an answer for pudding ;)

It isn't a play on words you prize plum. It's an established phrase which means exactly what I employed it as. If I said, "I've never eaten better than when I was a fisherman", you wouldn't have reacted as you have would you...You'd have guessed that I meant I ate a lot of very nice fish...
You chose to put your own meaning on it
As in, you read it as "the best meal I ever had came from a skip"

Who's fucking with words exactly? :D

It was exactly the way I would phrase it to someone here, as I said, everyone's boy here. Even the 90 summats. Maybe the Cornish appreciate the inner child more than the Scots :dunno: :chuckle: :hide:
