I was going to include Assange`s speech but thankfully was beaten to it. I also wanted to add this video which i believe was recorded beforehand. i include it because it is independent media from the event. The way forward I think and one thing that sets us apart from the people of 1963.

I will also point out that he mentioned Pussy Riot for those who I hear claim Assange is a Russian spy. I saw that somewhere and thought it was kind of an odd allegation.

Just a thought. Julian Assange might be forced to have to work for the U.S: Government in order to regain his freedom.
Hope it doesn't happen.

Well I know a lot of "truthers" are trying to push the idea that he is/could be a CIA puppet etc.

Very convenient for the "anti-leaks" astro turf (Dow chemical/Stratfor sponsored) isn't it?

Of course the "truthers" that echo Glenn Beck, venerate Alex Jones and cite Infowars are obviously invested in this story politically. ;)

We should not forget what this is about. This is about the persecution of an individual who has made life much more simple and more productive for whistleblowers in the information age and in an age when, as Western governments become increasingly authoritarian and civil liberties are diminished, we need whistleblowers more than ever to protect the rights of all of us.

So what do the crowd who think he's some kind of 'plant' or whatever think govt is trying to accomplish by getting him extradited to guantanamo?
I just don't get this RWA wingnut conspiracy mindset tbh lol.

Well it depends on which element of the Wingnut Axis they are part of.

The Not-a-Nazis
Are seeing teh j00z pulling his strings, but they would blame their earwax on jews FFS.
They are also miffed at the leaking of the BNP membership file.

The Alex Jones Info Warriors
Are mostly closet GOPers and would just as quickly have Julian shot as your average PNAC neo con.

The Tea Party "Truthers"
the Astroturfers funded by Koch have probably signed up with Anti-leaks (funded by Dow Chemical/Coca Cola, Stratfor and a whole host of others) and are flooding every board that they can on a volunteer post-for-freedom campaign. Their genuine belief in the truther conspiracies is dubious to say the least

the fantasists
This lot do not want the reality of a truth movement coming into the mainstream. They have their niche, thier cult full of mysteries and secret "truths" and would rather it remained that way. They normally use the argument that any public revelation or disclosure MUST be fake to have become open to the public in the first place. Their objection is not so much politically as emotionally motivated.

the centre left
cling tightly to the "rape" allegations despite having them totally refuted. The Guardian readership and the "liberal" journalists on the BBC make up these fair weather friends. I was discussing this with such types here.
www.enterthefray.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=46262&st=0
I include them amongst the Authoritarian Right Wingers because quite frankly, no matter what they call themselves, they are employing the same arguments and even the same rhetoric as the wingnuts.

the genuine open wingnut or "patriot"

the lad on the forum sums their POV up
Yes... he is an enemy combatant, IMO. He is providing HIGHLY classified information to the enemy. Whether you (or he) want to concede it or not, he is a spy in a war situation. People will almost certainly die because of what he has done. People in Afghanistan will almost certainly die; people who want to create a land where women have rights and gays aren't persecuted. People like them will continue to be afraid to help out behind the scenes out of fear that they will be disclosed. Assange has threatened to use his 'poison pill' in which tons of raw intelligence information will be released, with no editing or redactions. He is a menace to the cause and a serious threat to the lives of operatives, and is also an impediment to other coming forth to help with a just cause. He should be treated like the enemy spy that he (wittingly or not) is.

needless to say I think this guy is very dangerous to the rest of the world.

And there are millions like him :hide:

Sorry for the confusion.

I have heard good and bad about the guy and am confused myself. Does Ecuador not have an extradition treaty with USA? Maybe that's why 'they' are moving heaven and earth to prevent him from going there?

Edit: I can see there is very fruitful debate on the subject for 'both sides' (lacking a better description). Like Dubs, I shall also refrain from further comment. I apologize if I caused an inflammatory situation, instead, I shall lurk which I think is best.

P.S. Thank you Gilly.

You didn't cause an inflammatory situation, Coco. Also, I forgot to dig out anything for you. :emb:

A lot of us are cheering him on, but it's not obligatory. :D

I don't understand what info he's released that would cause the deaths of anyone on the battle-ground, as claimed by various US leaders - rather, he's uncovered unnecessary, ruthless deaths. But that might be my lack of knowledge. When you see one after another eminent American spokesman publicly calling for his murder, I want to know how they can get away with that unhampered by the law themselves.

Don't just lurk - you might have knowledge that will give a more balanced picture!

Well, mainly to the Americans its TOP SECRET information. "forbidden knowledge".
But he has shown many, how much information is hidden from us, in countries were teh press
is supposed to be "FREE". So to many he is enemy number 1, and they are afraid of him adn his information in Wikileaks.
No wonder he sought asylum in Ecuador ,an anti-Imperialist country, so they would give him a hand in everything. All OAS latin American countries are backing him up.
Assange is a good manipulator, and plays the political game well.
I'm sure he has an ace up his sleeve.
We'll have to continue seeing how this soap-Opera develops... :D

Shitty media getting shittier
A number of mainstream media attacks on me today. Astonishingly, not a single one admits that Anna Ardin gave media interviews accusing Assange and put her own name in the public domain. Despite the fact I spent most of yesterday being interviewed by journalists and repeating that point over and over again.

www.craigmurray.org.uk/
But the all-time prize goes to Carl Gardner, former junior government lawyer and now the go to right wing “legal expert” brought out by the BBC and the Guardian. In his blog “Head of Legal” (Gardner has never been head of anything), Gardner argues that what I said was not illegal, but that we need a new law to stop me saying it!

Well I remember the bias of the BBC during the 80's miners strike, but the Guardian needs to hang its head in shame

www.guardian.co.uk/media/2012/aug/19/jul...olivar-knightsbridge

This is what now passes for journalism in that turncoat rag
This, perhaps, was the moment for someone to shout: "'E's not the Messiah! 'E's a very naughty boy!" But from the Met officers there was a gloomy silence.
Still, one senses Scotland Yard may get the last laugh. Ecuador is a long way away. "He's not going anywhere," one police officer said of Assange, as the crowds melted away in the rain.

by Luke Harding, so Luke, if we are getting comical, how funny is this?
In 2007, The Guardian apologized for material in an article by Harding that was "substantially similar" to another article published earlier that year in the eXile[1].

The BBC has today posted this feature on their website:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-19333439

In the text it states "The idea that the allegations in Sweden against the Wikileaks founder do not constitute rape under English law has been debunked by a number of writers."

In that feature the emboldened bit is a link which directs you to this article on the New Statesman Site by ONE writer, David Allen Green:

www.newstatesman.com/blogs/david-allen-g...-assange-extradition

This is the relevant paragraph in D A G's article:

"This is flatly untrue. The Assange legal team argued this twice before English courts, and twice the English courts ruled clearly that the allegation would also constitute rape under English law."

However, the English courts were not privvy to the evidence, merely the allegations. Those courts could not consider the crucial section of Sofia Wilen's statement. They were merely judging on the Extradition warrant's legitimacy based on the UK statute that is quoted in the BBC article with regards to sleep.

If the courts had been privvy to Sofia Wilen's statement and judged on that, I very much doubt the outcome would have been the same.

The point of my posting this is to show that yet again our impartial state broadcaster is propagandising, hard, along with other sections of the media....

I'm gonna cut the BBC some slack. ONE is a number
As for the contention being "debunked" by that ONE writer.....hardly. All he has shown is that the system of the EAW is fatally flawed.
The British court dealing with it could not judge based on evidence, merely allegation. THAT opens the door to injustice and jams it open with a gert big rock.

Disclaimer: None of the above in any way constitutes my support or condoning of the way in which JA allegedly instigated that morning's sexual relations with Sofia Wilen. It is not something that I would personally do nor condone.

Before we start making judgments about JA's sexual antics, we should at least read his interview with the Swedish police.
