Assange: US has “given tacit approval for attacks on embassies”
Assange: US has “given tacit approval for attacks on embassies”

By Toby ManhireToby Manhire | Published on September 13, 2012 | Online Only

WikiLeaks Twitter account links founder's treatment with attack on US consulate in Libya.

Julian Assange’s Twitter activity has more than once beggared belief.

But whatever you think of the WikiLeaks founder, who is currently sheltering in the Ecuadorean embassy in London, it’s hard to fathom his latest tweeted statement, in which he asserts some sort of link between the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, in which the American ambassador was killed, and his own treatment.

The tweet:

ASSANGE:By the US accepting the UK siege on the Ecuadorian embassy in London it gave tacit approval for attacks on embassies around the world.

(Note, the UK did not storm the Ecuador embassy.)

Loyal Assange supporter Jemima Khan had the best response:

That last @wikileaks tweet manages to be both absurd and shockingly offensive & I say that as a wikileaks supporter.

The original, offending tweet was subsequently deleted, to be replaced with:

By the US accepting the UK threat to storm the Ecuadorian embassy in London it helped to normalize attacks on embassies.

And an explanatory followup:

We have deleted and rephrased a previous tweet with the word ‘tacit’ in it, since the word is rare and was being misinterpreted.

More spin today from Toady Man-for-hire and yet another hit piece on Assange and wikileaks by another old Guardian Judas (the aithor Manhire was comments editor).

What he failed to present as a balance report is this: it is a recorded fact that theUS pressure on the UK Foreign Office was instrumental in the decision to threaten the Embassy which, had it not been for the public's attention been given, menat the storming of a foreign Embassy.

And yeah, since one man was killed in Libya, so one man would have been killed in a US military prison.

Not such an absurd comparison after all.

btw could you provide a link chandra?

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been offered an Aboriginal Nations passport in an inner-city Sydney ceremony after he was 'abandoned' by Australian authorities.

His father, John Shipton, accepted the document at a celebration in Darlington on Saturday.

He said his son had been jilted by the Australian government, and the passport ceremony - which follows Ecuador's decision to grant Mr Assange diplomatic asylum - was a show of solidarity.

'Australian governments of every colour are happy to abandon their citizens when they're in difficult situations overseas,' he said.

Mr Assange has been staying at Ecuador's embassy in London since June to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over sexual assault allegations.

His lawyers fear extradition to Sweden could pave the way for him to be sent to the US, where he could face trial over his website's release of classified documents.

The group that organised Saturday's ceremony, the Indigenous Social Justice Association, wants recognition of Aboriginal sovereignty.

Mr Shipton said his son had requested a change to the wording of the document but embraced the cause.

'Julian has always expressed the desire that the Aboriginal people of Australia be recognised as sovereign,' he said.

'It is a point of view that is becoming more accepted.'

Indigenous Social Justice Association president Ray Jackson said more than 200 people were present at what could become an annual event.

He said the Australian government had not given Mr Assange sufficient aid.

'Julian was treated badly by this government, who are quite happy to sit back and take orders from the US,' Mr Jackson said.

The passport will now be sent to Mr Assange in London.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr last month told the Labor caucus Australia had intervened on Mr Assange's behalf more than 60 times during his legal wrangle with Sweden

Kind gesture indeed.
Don't know how close to following orders from US is Australia though.
I suppose under this situation Assange cannot trust anyone.

No DNA link to Assange in condom central to sex assault case

Published: 16 September, 2012, 23:57
Edited: 17 September, 2012, 08:40

A ripped condom given to Swedish police by one of Julian Assange’s accusers does not contain the WikiLeaks founder’s DNA, forensic scientists have reportedly found.
In a 100-page document shown to Assange’s lawyers, it was revealed that the torn prophylactic, having been examined by staff at two forensic laboratories, did not bear conclusive evidence that Assange had ever worn it, the Daily Mail reported on Sunday.
Assange’s lawyers said the lack of DNA evidence on the condom, which was allegedly used during a supposed August 2010 sexual assault, indicates that a fake one could have been submitted.
The woman in question, now aged 33, claims to have been molested by Assange at her flat in Stockholm. She says that at one point he deliberately broke a condom in order to have unprotected sex with her.
Assange claims he had consensual sex with the woman, but denies intentionally tearing the condom. He had previously told police that he continued to stay at her residence for the week following the alleged incident, saying his accuser never made any mention of the ripped condom.
But DNA purportedly belonging to Assange was present on a condom submitted by a second woman, who has accused him of rape, prompting Swedish authorities to push ahead with their bid to have him extradited from the UK.
However, his second accuser, now 29, who claimed to have been raped in her sleep by Assange, apparently told police she had not been opposed to having unprotected sex with him despite previous statements to the contrary, the daily reported.

Assange denies the allegation of rape, maintaining he had consensual sex with the second woman as well. The Swedish prosecutor’s office refused to comment on the report, saying that the investigation was ongoing.
The whistleblower has been holed up at Ecuador's Embassy in London since June, after the UK Supreme Court upheld his extradition warrant to Sweden.
In August he was granted political asylum by the country’s president, Rafael Correa, out of fear he could be handed over to American authorities upon setting foot in Sweden, and eventually charged with leaking classified documents.
Safe passage to Ecuador has not been secured by British authorities, however, as the UK maintains it will arrest him if he leaves the embassy, deporting him to Sweden.
In August, Assange told Ecuador's Gama television network that he expected the diplomatic impasse with the UK to be resolved within a year.
And while Canberra has often been accused of turning a blind eye to Assange’s plight, the Indigenous Social Justice Association, an Australian group which wants recognition of Aboriginal sovereignty, showed their support by offering him an Aboriginal Nations passport on Sunday, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

His father, John Shipton, accepted the document on Assange’s behalf at a celebration in Sydney, which was attended by more than 200 people.
"Australian governments of every color are happy to abandon their citizens when they're in difficult situations overseas," the daily reports him as saying.
The group, which also accused the Australian authorities of failing to provide sufficient aid to one of its citizens, said the passport will be sent to Assange in London.

Protecting WikiLeaks colleagues is top goal: Julian Assange

From: AFP
September 19, 2012 1:43

WIKILEAKS founder Julian Assange, still holed up in Ecuador's embassy in London, said his number one goal is to protect colleagues at the controversial website from "any possible attack" by the United States.

In an interview published by Quito's official Andes government news agency, Mr Assange said he hopes to pressure the United States to "abandon its campaign against us."

"My main task is to continue to keep our people safe from possible attack by the United States," the WikiLeaks founder said.

Mr Assange has been sheltering in the embassy since June 19 to avoid extradition to Sweden. Britain has vowed to arrest him if he leaves the embassy.

The 41-year-old Australian sought Quito's protection after he had exhausted legal appeals against extradition to Sweden, where he is sought for questioning on sexual assault allegations.

Mr Assange fears Sweden eventually will hand him over to the United States, where he says he could face prosecution and even the death penalty over his website's release of a trove of secret US diplomatic and military documents.

On Monday, Ecuador's Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino renewed his call for talks between London and Quito to resolve the standoff.

Ecuador and the United Kingdom are recorded for the future of Assange
Representatives of both governments will meet in New York on Thursday to discuss the situation of the founder of Wikileaks
22.09.12 - 01:19 -
EFE | QUITO (ECUADO

Foreign Minister of Ecuador, Ricardo Patiño, reported that will meet on Thursday with his UK counterpart, William Hague, to discuss the future of Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks, who has taken refuge in the embassy in London to avoid extradition to Sweden. The meeting, to be held in New York, "reaffirms the government of both countries to seek a diplomatic solution framed in international law", according to a Foreign Ministry statement of Quito.
Both ministers will travel to the U.S. to attend the UN General Assembly. Negotiations between the two countries were suspended after Ecuador received a letter in mid-August in which his government said the UK threatened to break into the embassy to arrest Assange.+

Speaking to the press, Patiño has been proposed as one solution to the problem that "Ecuador can get permission to move, if necessary, to him at our embassy in Sweden and the process can continue to have the protection of Ecuador and meeting the requirements of the Swedish justice ". He also reiterated that among other options that your country has raised is that the UK delivered a pass to the founder of WikiLeaks that comes out of the embassy in London without danger of being arrested and to travel to Ecuador.

Swedish prosecutors
He further proposed that Swedish prosecutors questioned Assange complete a legation in your country or in the British capital that Britain and Sweden give "full guarantees", which referred to a commitment that will not be extradited to the United USA.
The founder of Wikileaks, who was granted asylum in Ecuador, argues that it is subject to political persecution by the disclosure by WikiLeaks of thousands of diplomatic cables that have embarrassed several countries, especially the United States. The Australian maintains that if Sweden to extradite him to the United States could face the death penalty or life imprisonment for publishing confidential information. Patino can be expected to find a negotiated solution to the issue, but added that his country would not rule out going to court if not fructify international talks with the UK

Ricardo Patiño not rule the transfer of Julian Assange
AFP | QUITO

Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño yesterday raised the possibility that the founder of Wikileaks, Julian Assange, is transferred from London to Sweden, under protection of Quito, to respond in a process for alleged sex crimes.

"The other possibility is that Ecuador can get permission to move, if necessary, to our Embassy in Sweden and the process can continue to have the protection of Ecuador and meeting the requirements of the Swedish justice," he said.

That's one of several "alternative mobility" that Assange "can continue to maintain our protection, our refuge, and that can also meet the requirements of Swedish prosecution statements".

Assange entered the Embassy of Ecuador in London on June 19 and August 16 was granted asylum.

The minister said that "no news" in the case against Assange because "some tests have been ruled out."

He also said that the pass is still the most desirable scenario for Assange leaves the seat, but reiterated alternatives such as a guarantee in the UK and Sweden that will not be extradited to the U.S. or to be investigated by the Attorney Swedish Embassy .
