British QC who insists that the 1987 legislation could not be used to enter the Ecuadorian Embassy in Mr Assange's case.

.@WilliamJHague: #Assange faces serious charges in country with the highest standards of law & where his rights are guaranteed.

Dear Mr. Hague,

Mr Assange does not face charges because he has not been charged. Moreover, Sweden declined to guarentee that he would not be extradicted to the US.

The fact that you are unaware of this might suggest that you are unfit to handle this case.

Keep in mind the same William Hague, (when leader of the Tories), was opposed to that murdering bastard
Gen Augusto Pinochet being extradited to Spain in 1999 for human rights abuses like; conspiracy to torture, torture, hostage-taking, conspiracy to murder, throwing opponents out of planes etc. (Thatcher idolised the nasty little fuck).

Of course he was allowed to freely jet out of here by Jack Straw.

I've been looking at the FO twitter page and the word "charges" now reads "allegations". I went to the FO site where they have transcribed the speech that quote is from. Again it has the words "allegations". Has anyone seen footage of Hague giving the statement? If so which word did he use?

1) I thought embassies were neutral territory and could not be raided?
2) If he was granted asylum, and have to leave embassy grounds, will he not be arrested immediately upon doing so?
3) Does Ecuador have an extradition treaty?
4) I can see why they granted it to him after the police and everyone swarmed the damn place...it was obvious they wanted him bad and probably not for very good reasons.

They are treated as the Sovereign territory of the country they represent
2) If he was granted asylum, and have to leave embassy grounds, will he not be arrested immediately upon doing so?
Pretty much yes, though the embassy vehicles have diplomatic immunity and I've heard he could avoid it if he is declared a UN ambassador by Ecuador
3) Does Ecuador have an extradition treaty?
Not with Britain I don't think
4) I can see why they granted it to him after the police and everyone swarmed the damn place...it was obvious they wanted him bad and probably not for very good reasons.
Yes indeed

Not to mention the fact that the US put Pinochet into power in the first place:

I just heard someone on the BBC news describe Assange as the "sitting tenant from hell". This seems a little melodramatic! I haven't really been following this story because the way it's unfolding is entirely predictable and depressing, but it does seem that Assange is being made an example to others, and possibly a scapegoat to justify an extended policy in this area.

This^^^
Assange is being gone after in this way as a strong message to anyone who ever thinks they can stand up in opposition to the covert, underhand machinations of the corporofascist imperialists.
If he ends up in the US I can see his body being hoisted onto a pole to stand at the gate of the tinterwebz as a reminder to all who enter to STFU.

Well, I haven't followed this story at all, although I am grateful to Wikileaks for releasing Bilderberg minutes. But I just caught about twenty seconds of the BBC news, and heard this quotation, as the lead item on the BBC news (actually I just found a reference to it):

members5.boardhost.com/medialens/msg/1345139295.html

"Ecuador now has the sitting tenant from hell. Let Assange and Ecuador stew in their own juices. Justice will prevail."

This is an incredibly strong statement. Not just from anyone, but from Sir Christopher Meyer, former British Ambassador to the US. It reminds me of when the US went to great lengths to extradite the completely harmless Bobby Fischer. But I just thought as soon as I heard it that at the very least they're making an example of him.

In Assange’s case, he’s not an American and so he has no constitutional protection. Moreover, he’s going to get a lot of people killed.

Can we do anything legally about someone from another country leaking this information? Maybe not. Can we have a CIA agent with a sniper rifle rattle a bullet around his skull the next time he appears in public as a warning? You bet we can — and we should. If that’s too garish for people, then the CIA can kill him and make it look like an accident.

Either way, Julian Assange deserves to die for what he’s done and he should be killed to send a message loud enough to convince other people not to publish documents like this in the future.

I hadn't seen all that stuff, but it doesn't surprise me. Some of these people are mentally ill. Some of them, of course, know exactly what they're doing, but many of them have an acute case of Stockholm Syndrome.

I've been avoiding this story because it's all unfolding in a sad and predictable fashion, and I'm sure what Paul Craig Roberts has said is completely correct. The BBC will tell everyone that Assange is an evil man; indeed they already are. Everyone will suck it up like it's as sweet as chocolate, and some sort of bill will be passed.

Extradition expert Anand Doobay has just put paid to Tariq Ali's idea that Assange become a member of embassy staff in order to avoid arrest: to be a diplomat in the UK, you must be accredited by the government.

Doobay said another suggestion that he be smuggled out in a "diplomatic bag" – usually used to carry post and papers – was far fetched. "Ecuador would have to breach the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations," he said.

The UK Government passed a law (Diplomatic and Consular Premises Act 1987) where they can strip an embassy of it's powers if i understand the law correctly.
