The soldier Manning accused the Pentagon of unfair treatment during detention
The soldier was detained in solitary confinement in a Marine Corps base 2011

Manning will take the podium for the first time in his trial

Bradley Manning

Bradley Manning's defense claimed in one of the hearings prior to his court martial that the 30 months that the soldier has been in military custody, and especially those who were in solitary confinement at a Marine Corps base in Virginia, are sufficient punishment for their crimes, and that the judge should dismiss the request of prosecutors Pentagon that is applied to life imprisonment. Manning is being tried for stealing 700,000 pages of secret documents U.S. and filter the portal Wikileaks revealing secrets.

The soldier's civilian lawyer, David Coombs, argued at the hearing that the orders to keep the soldier in a harsh solitary confinement, where he was detained at the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia, came from up the chain of command, from the Pentagon itself, and not due to the independent evaluation of medical professionals.

The first witness of this round of previews, which itself is expected to take the stand Private Manning was Lt. Col. Daniel Choike, who was commander of the Quantico base when Manning was detained there between July 29 2010 to April 20, 2011. Choike admitted that Lieutenant General George Lynn, who ran the Combat Development Command and the Marine Corps, within the Department of Defense, wrote several emails to subordinates inquiring about the conditions of detention of the soldier and the media coverage of the case.

For three days in January 2011, the military prison managers placed Manning on suicide prevention regime. That involved spending 24 hours in his cell, deprived of sleep and even lose their clothes glasses. The soldier complained to Choike in a letter to his lawyers then leaked to the press. John E. Méndez, Special Rapporteur of the United Nations on torture, came to ask for an explanation in writing to the State Department. Amnesty International also filed several complaints. The Pentagon Manning moved to another prison in Kansas in April 2011.

The defense tries to reduce the possible sentence to Manning, alleging that he was subjected to unfair treatment in detention prior to trial. Counsel asked Lieutenant Colonel Choike what were the grounds for keeping Manning in maximum security regime and suicide prevention. "The seriousness of the charges, the possibility of inflicting harm himself, he could act with poor judgment, and they were so damaged his relationship with his family," he said.

Manning then related that he had behaved erratically to be moved from the Middle East to the prison at Quantico. "I played peekaboo with the soldiers. Licking the bars of his cell. She danced in a strange way, "he said. The attorney then asked, "He assaulted someone? Attacked? Someone? Was it disrespectful? Disrupted? Order? ". The answer to all these questions was no.

Coombs Counsel also submitted as evidence an email to one of the supervisors of the detention center sent Lieutenant Colonel Choike. It was a humorous poem about the obligation of Manning undressing to sleep at night. "I can take you in a box. I can take during the day. I can take it because I said so. But I can not take it at night. My comments have scared my employees, "the supervisor said, referring to clothing refusing him to Manning. Manning's defense argued comments like these to show the humiliation in dealing the soldier while he remained in solitary confinement.

Manning has decided to assume that it was he who seized and secret cables leaked to Wikileaks. Tests held the Pentagon are too strong to deny. His defense has focused on finding reasons to invalidate the judgment, first, to present mitigating later. Prosecutors have accused him, among other things, of high treason. Therefore, they requested life imprisonment. Following these hearings, is expected to formally begin martial on February 4.

Europe Can Solve Assange Case, Says Correa

Quito, Dec 29 (Prensa Latina) President Rafael Correa said today that Europe has the power to resolve the case of Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks today on his 193rd day of assylum in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.
"WeâÖve said all that needs to be done," said the head of State from Tungurahua province in relation to Assange's stay in the Ecuadorian Embassy due to the British refusal to allow him travel to Ecuador.

Correa added that as a citizen of the world, the Australian journalist requested asylum to the South American country, in line with the international law, since he feels his life exposed. The government of Ecuador, he said, studied the demand and found there is fondation to declare Assange as a politically persecuted person.

Besides, it has been established that Assange did not steal the information that Wikileaks circulated, exposing Washington, published by media around the world -like the United States NYT; El Pais of Spain- which have echoed it and were never ever sued or tried for it.

If Britain gives (Assange) a safe conduct, it would all be over tomorrow, said Correa, who noted that if Sweden leads an interrogation at the Embassy or via the Internet, this matter would be concluded for good.

He added that if AssangeâÖs defense team, led by Spanish Baltasar Garzón, succeeds in getting through European Courts "this would be over tomorrow."

"It all depends on Europe," he stressed.

The statements by President Correa coincide with FridayâÖs publication on The Telegraph of a feature stressing on the need for more pressure on Britain to settle this situation.

Political asylum struck a chord in the international
Mauro Cerbino, political analyst and professor at FLACSO

The presence of Julian Assange at the Embassy of Ecuador in London is a significant political event in the international context.

The Ecuadorian government, to give asylum to Assange, was inserted significantly on the world stage.

I think it is good that the country has opted for this initiative, as the creator of WikiLeaks is a major global political relevance, the fact revealing documents of American diplomacy.

For the media, private companies tried to discredit the information the government initiative, politicizing the issue of Assange and directing their own interests.

They wanted to make the issue once again, creating a basis for opposition to the government of Rafael Correa. Sought to establish a relationship between this initiative and the political reaction in the United States, saying that America would retaliate against Ecuador.

Similarly, on the issue of freedom of speech, or leaking information to reveal secret documents that affect the majority of world citizenship or valid.

The very practice of leaking documents is the result of the concealment of information from countries that only look after their interests, although this content may affect most citizens.

Therefore it is necessary for someone to disclose this information kept secret because it affects the interests of the majority.

In that sense it has all the legitimacy and it is desirable that documents evidencing, that the world's citizens are not disadvantaged.

Julian Assange,'' the'' most wanted hacker in history.

Analysis of the famous spy case
By: Enrique Toussaint

Julian Assange's case contains all the elements of a conspiracy novel of the years of the Cold War: a fighter for freedom of expression, a country that resists U.S. and disabled until a lawyer in your country

GUADALAJARA, JALISCO (26/AGO/2012.) - The main actors of this novel called Assange case, enjoy implicit contradictions: the United States, the historic global spy who built a complex system of intelligence during the twentieth century, feels violated and identified in the WikiLeaks an unforgivable crime, an Ecuador that want to be seen as a steadfast defender of freedom of expression and has launched repeated attacks on the press into its borders, an England which for decades has alluded to the right maintain international colonist aftertaste like the Falkland Islands, and now denies diplomatic immunity and safe conduct, and Sweden has been hypothesized that the rule of law and now does not clarify the implications of the rape charges against Julian Assange.

The truth is that amid all this plot, we find a pair worthy of a Hollywood thriller: the "hacker" most wanted cyber history, Julian Assange, and his attorney, Spanish Baltazar Garzon, who is more than a professional alliance, the relationship between them is the start of a partnership that will make the fight against opacity, its main public argument. Garzon does not seek the truth of the courts, knows that this claim is unreachable, the judgment of public opinion is the goal.

The pair-Garzón Assange sees no judges to recipients of your message, conquer prefer media, cafes and bars. International pressure, no global law is their only reliable ally.

An actor unexpected

Rafael Correa has broken into this frame as out of nowhere. The president of the tiny South American country (with a GDP 10 times lower than Mexico), did not hesitate to jeopardize their relationship with Britain and the United States to defend the fugitive Assange. Correa, president of Ecuador and promoter of the "Citizens' Revolution", which has allowed the country to change the Constitution, has not been recognized internationally as a reliable defender of freedom of expression.

The proposed media law, which has not yet been approved by the Ecuadorian Congress, extends access of social groups to the media, but it increases the power of state control over the press.

Correa has sued more than 20 times to journalists and media for defamation, the lawsuit against El Universo, a communications giant in Ecuador, is the most memorable episode.

The irony of this story plots and complicity, is that Assange has been defended by nations that have shown high control of the media, and with a long tradition of intelligence and classified. Russia, Iran, Turkey, Ecuador and Venezuela are among the countries that have denounced the violation of the most basic principles of freedom of expression by the persecutors of Assange. Thus, the more Assange case shows that, more than a question of freedom of expression, has become a political issue, where opposing nations to "American imperialism" seek to demonstrate how little democratic vocation of the American Union.

WikiLeaks vs America

The danger facing America is the over-obsession of his arrest Assange. On one hand, the U.S. does not want the international press made of the persecution of WikiLeaks honcho permanent a topic of discussion. Both Barack Obama and David Cameron are committed to the cooling issue and move extradition proceedings undertaken by the Swedish justice.

I know the United States: the legitimacy that Assange has won a part of the international community is a major obstacle to the intent that the American activist networks across tread American soil and the courts of this country. But, on the other hand, disputes in international law, may lead to the Latin American nations, or even Russia-haunted by the emergence of the theme of the band Pussy Riot-scale litigation that seek to politically General Assembly United Nations. United States, United Kingdom and Sweden know that the secrecy and darkness, are their contexts of action.

In the end, "behind the interests are not friends", to paraphrase Henry Kissinger. Correa has a head start on your re-election in 2013 and the construction of its axis of cooperation with Russia, Iran and China, the United States knows that go unpunished so deep breach the national security apparatus, is an incentive for the future recurrence of leaks, for UK is essential to send a message of strength and political power to a Europe, which sails in uncertainty. For now, a tiny 10-Ecuadorian embassy workers, has become the center of global debate masked freedom of expression.

THE HOME

Leaks

Julian Paul Assange created Wikileaks in 2006. The website aims to inform citizens by leaking news topics.

In November 2010, Sweden issued an arrest warrant for Assange, following a statement by two WikiLeaks volunteers women claiming to be victims of sexual founder of this organization, a crime in that country is punishable by up to six years in prison.

That same year and month, the first filtered WikiLeaks U.S. diplomatic cables. Of the more than 250 thousand that was in possession of two thousand 625 were sent from Mexico. This was the biggest leak of confidential documents in history, known as "Cablegate", which WikiLeaks distributed and agreed with some American and European newspapers publish jointly.

In early 2011, Assange decided to open all files sorted without editing or cover to sources, after one of his former partners published the password to access the WikiLeaks files, so several newspapers withdrew their support for the organization .

In October 2011, Assange announces the suspension of operations due to financial problems after WikiLeaks blocking Bank of America, Western Union, Visa, Mastercard and Paypal. Still, some days later reveals five million emails intelligence agency Stratfor.

In England, surrendered to authorities and later was granted parole, but last May the Supreme Court approved his extradition to Sweden. Days later took refuge in the embassy of Ecuador, where the government sought diplomatic asylum Correa.

Exclusive: Ecuador waits arrival of Chilean journalist who uncovered CIA plans to topple Correa

Chilean journalist Patricio Mery was invited by Ecuadorian officials to share information about an alleged CIA plan that seeks to topple President Rafael Correa in the coming 2013 elections, according to Verdad Ahora's sources.

The plan was first published in October, 2012 by Mery’s ‘Panoramas News’, an independent media outlet. Quoting an anonymous source from the National Intelligence Agency of Chile (ANI), the article details a shadowy drug network run by the CIA and DEA, and backed by the Chilean Police of Investigations (PDI), Chilean Minister of Defense Rodrigo Hinzpeter and elements of the military.

According to former PDI police officer Fernando Ulloa, close to 300 kilograms of cocaine coming from Bolivia were smuggled monthly to Chile with help of corrupt elements in the Chilean government. Minister Hinzpeter was informed about this in May 2011, but he did nothing to stop the illegal operation.

Mery was told by his source that the drug money would then be used to fund a black operation against Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, a plan that mirrors Oliver North’s strategy in Central America during the 1980s Iran-Contra scandal.

The accusation co-relates with information coming from former UK ambassador to Uzbekistan Craig Murray, who posted in his blog that the Pentagon had increased it's budget to $87 million dollars for a plan to topple Correa’s government. The US decision was allegedly taken after the victory of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela.

Several sources told Verdad Ahora that Mery was invited to Ecuador by Chancellor Ricardo Patiño, a prominent activist and member of Correa’s administration.

Mery will be accompanied by two agents linked to the PDI(Investigation) and one from the ANI.(Chilean Intelligence)
