Attorney general takes action over 'Bulger killer images'
Police handout in 1993 of Jon Venables Jon Venables (pictured in 1993) was jailed again for two years in July 2010

The attorney general is taking legal action against several people who published photographs said to show one of James Bulger's killers.

There is a ban on publishing anything revealing the identity of Jon Venables or Robert Thompson.

Images said to show one of them as they are now appeared online earlier in February, and have since been removed.

Contempt proceedings against those identified as having posted the photographs are now under way.

The Attorney General's Office (AGO) said proceedings had been instituted against a number of individuals and court papers would be served shortly.
'Placed in danger'

Breaches of the injunction order banning identification of either man could lead to a fine or imprisonment, the AGO said.

A spokesman added: "The terms of the order mean that if a picture claims to be of Venables or Thompson, even if it is not actually them, there will be a breach of the order.

"There are many different images circulating online claiming to be of Venables or Thompson; potentially innocent individuals may be wrongly identified as being one of the two men and placed in danger.

"The order, and its enforcement, is therefore intended to protect not only Venables and Thompson but also those members of the public who have been incorrectly identified as being one of the two men."

Venables and Thompson were 10 years old when they abducted two-year-old James in Bootle, Merseyside, in February 1993 before torturing and murdering him.

They were convicted later in the year and both released in 2001, receiving a new secret identity and address.

Venables was jailed for two years in July 2010 after admitting downloading and distributing indecent images of children. He has been refused parole

I actually saw those photo's last month, and although I agree with the points raised, I'm pretty certain it was Venables.

I saw them too, have to say it did appear to be.

There are two issues here:

should child-killers be free to a 'normal' life having served their sentence?

what is the motive of a pic campaign identifying them?

The first point has already been covered since the incident so I'll leave that to others to bring up if they so wish; the second I'm inclined to think it would eventually lead to them getting murdered because "we can't have murderers wandering freely" and for that reason (and perhaps moreso the possibility of mistaken identity) the whole idea feels a bit witch-hunty to me.

Yes, I agree. But is it pure coincidence, I wonder, that Jamie Bulger's mum was on the radio a few weeks ago, campaigning for Venables not to be released, because she believes he's still a threat to society? I'm not implying she had anything to do with those photo's being publicised, but I can't help thinking it may have been someone who was possibly influenced by sympathy for her and a shared belief that the authorities have been too soft on him - that he's not a reformed character, as demonstrated by his child pornography picture escapades.

The press know who and where they are, have done all along, and if info is leaking out then the press is ultimately the source.

The police would have sold that info ages ago. ;)

I have serious issues with this whole scenario.

The death of that little boy back then affected me really badly and caught me off guard at the time. I was emotionally fucked up for weeks, possibly months after. I resented the MSM so badly for the details that they seemed to insist we knew about and it's the details that haunted me. James was so alike my sisters little boy of the same age and it seemed that everytime I saw him, I saw in my head what happened to James. I'd say it was probably the start of my hatred towards the MSM too when I think about it.

Doesn't one of them live back in Liverpool? I'm sure they do. And if that's the case, how the fuck is it ok for him to walk about Liverpool knowing exactly who James family are but they aren't allowed to know what he looks like... WTF is that about?

It's a mess and my honest opinion is that neither of those two should be allowed to stay in the UK. I say that from the point of view that if I ever came across one of them, I'd likely end up in a whole heap of shit. That's coming from someone who's just part of joe public - I cant even begin to imagine what it must be like for any of his family.

Its a bomb waiting to go off is what it is and the best thing for everyone is get them the fuck out of the UK.

I'd go further than that sketti, & say that Thompson & Venables are a pair of evil monsters on a par with the likes of Ian Brady....they have no place in society and should have been left to rot in prison till the day they die.

I don't care how young they were - they knew exactly what they were fucking doing.

You won't get any bleeding heart sentiment from me but based on the current judicial system they have a right to be free again at some point whether me and you agree or not. The problem with this system is it appears to place the rights of the criminal above the victims, which then fuels the kind of lynch mob mentality these circulated pics are bound to generate and I'd put money on them being killed. A society that creates all the mindsets involved in this whole sorry scenario has to be sick in itself.

The judicial system didn't rule that Brady or Hindley ever had the right to be free again at some point.
No, it quite rightly locked them away & threw away the key. Brady is even denied the right to die....they force-feed the cunt through a tube.

That's the way to avoid the vigilante lynch mob mentality....by dealing with monsters in the way the public wants to see them dealt with, not by being all bleeding heart liberal and releasing them after a few years of 'rehabilitation'.

We don't want them 'rehabilitated', we want them locked away out of our face, for ever.

i remember this whole thing too. something about childs play and chucky and then video nasties hysteria.
how come they get to hide and have protection? they should have to live with that millstone round their neck forever, looking over their shoulders. i hope someone ganks them on their way home. just at random.
you got to kill monsters, its sad but i think its true.

I just think killing someone because they killed someone is a bit of a cyclic mindset. Not saying I know how to break it, pretty sure that's not it.

I'm not saying let them roam freely either.

I can't accept that two kids from the same background did what they did just because they are 'evil or 'monsters' and their environment had no impact whatsoever. I know, the majority of the kids from a similar background don't end up child killers but the reason this case sticks in everyone's mind is because it held up that mirror reflecting our society, nobody particularly liked what they saw so they stopped looking....until the next 'evil monster'.

They will, regardless of whatever punishment 'we' deem appropriate for them. I know it's a contentious issue, but I really can't think of a worse punishment than that, tbh.

For Thompson, maybe.

Venables, no fucking way. His idea of remorse was to move on to child porn as his new hobby. Bit of a comedown from murder but he wasn't in the position to be picky.

He's some kids nightmare waiting to happen is what he is. And all the time, while he prepares to be that nightmare, the state protects him.

I agree to an extent that it was a failure on societys part but we can't do a damn thing to change that. What we can do as a society, is make sure that neither of them, Venables inparticular, never hurt anyone again.

thompson and venables are psychopaths.

Getting rid of psychopaths is the best thing for humanity.

I believe thompson and venables have or had a strange relationship with their mothers.

google their names and click on images to view them.

Is it them they are protecting or is it the punter(s) who would potentially kill them they are protecting from themselves?
