I like the bit about teaching children "traditional moral values" - I was under the impression stuff like caring for the sick, poor and vulnerable, not being greedy and not exploiting others for personal gain were "traditional moral values"? This was a woman who couldn't give a shit if you were living on the streets but was strangely preoccupied with who you decided to have sex with.
For me, it's just unfathomable. I just don't understand that mentality at all. If she seriously thinks being gay was being promoted in schools in England in the eighties, she should have spent some time at the school I attended!

I wouldn't wish dementia on anyone, but did she repent any of her decisions / views prior to that?

Another of Thatcher's legacies not yet mentioned is the 80s heroin epidemic - fueled by entire communities reduced to mass unemployment with no hope of digging themselves out of poverty. Heroin also crept into the traveler community after her brutal suppression of people who dared to live an unorthodox lifestyle - creating a self-fulfilling prophecy of travelers being feckless criminals after their community was ripped apart by brute force.
But don't worry! They govt were on hand to make it all better with the power of just saying no.

The next generation have been somewhat inoculated by seeing the havoc wreaked.
But I'm sure poverty despair management will find a new drug. Mephedrone perhaps (or whatever passes for it these days)., as that seems to have taken off in some deprived areas.

You cant be saying Pikies are feckless criminals...isnt so old chap as I found out on here. But seems you are now confirming this :coffee:

Thanks for picking me up on making a rather sweeping generalisation. I didn't mean to say travelers are all a bunch of crims, but was trying to point out that there was more of the kind of behaviour travelers routinely get accused of after their community was destroyed and gear moved in.
In the same way people who live in inner cities have never all been a bunch of crims, but when despair and heroin got in it certainly created a lot of problems.

the black and white chequer may give you a clue,on the square and all that... :chuckle:

Chester Square is a small, residential garden square located in London's Belgravia district. Along with its sister squares Belgrave Square and Eaton Square, it is one of the three garden squares built by the Grosvenor family when they developed the main part of Belgravia in the 19th century. Chester Square is named after the city of Chester, near to which Eaton Hall – the ancestral home of the Grosvenor family – is situated....Some Lodges and rituals explain these tools as lessons in conduct: for example, that Masons should "square their actions by the square of virtue"

Obviously, I totally agree, I do feel that although she was manipulated she genuinely believed in what she was doing, though. Blair, for example, obviously didn't believe a word he was saying, but I'm pretty sure she at least believed some of it.

I wonder who wrote this speech for Blair.... :hahano:
America has its faults as a society, as we have ours.

But I think of the Union of America born out of the defeat of slavery.

I think of its Constitution, with its inalienable rights granted to every citizen still a model for the world.

I think of a black man, born in poverty, who became chief of their armed forces and is now secretary of state Colin Powell and I wonder frankly whether such a thing could have happened here.

This is a moment to seize. The Kaleidoscope has been shaken. The pieces are in flux. Soon they will settle again. Before they do, let us re-order this world around us.
In correspondence dated March 21, 2012, Andrew Knight, director of billionaire Rupert Murdoch’s multinational News Corporation, asks General Powell to have a few words with Tony Blair about preparing for that year’s Bohemian Grove retreat and make sure that Tony Blair would attend the gathering.

The Milkman's on his Way (1982) was cited in the House of Lords for promoting homosexuality, in 1999 debate on Section 28. Baroness Knight of Collingtree said that it "explicitly described homosexual intercourse and, indeed, glorified it, encouraging youngsters to believe that it was better than any other sexual way of life."[5]

Police were heard to tell anti-Thatcher protesters in Trafalgar Square that Millwall football fans had joined the demonstration and were "throwing bottles of urine" at officers.

Nothing like a complete story.... apparently it's kicked off by these weird proto-Thatcher-Millwall fans & 'teh lefites'

From the live cam....

Party atmosphere.

Plod moved in for the sound system, gave the excuse that they were protecting party-goers from Millwall by forming a cordon. Meanwhile Millwall were at Wembley fighting plod (not TSG, they'd been assigned to Trafalgar). So Millwall ran amock at Wembley while the real gangsters bullied a party in Trafalgar.

If I missed owt do correct me ent.

Glorifying football hooliganism while supporting a PM that thought the following...

www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/may/18/...cher-tories-football
To Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government of the mid-1980s, however, football fans were as much of a menace as striking trade unionists. The post-Heysel resolve to "do something" about football hooliganism led to a woefully misconceived plan to require spectators to produce ID cards to gain admission.
Makes about as much sense as you usually do! What else would be expect from someone who doesn't care if people live or die, though?
