Great topic! Like Silverwand, it was Twin Peaks that grabbed me as a teen. I was a Peaks Freak!
Now I am a bit resentful of the mind fuckery I put myself through. David Lynch is like a mad genius, imo. I don't necessarily mean that in a good way, either. He is very effective(with his accomplice, Angelo Badalamenti) at using imagery and sound to really get under your skin a disturb on a subconscious level. But I guess that's just my bitter opinion.
It's kinda devious to have a show like Twin Peaks (which was very disturbing on many levels) geared toward teens. Once you become a fan, you will seek out his other work which is even more dark and deviant. Also, he really likes to show women being brutalized.
I could go on and on about David Lynch...I have so much to say about him. Lost Highway was like mental terrorism. Mulholland Drive was originally supposed to be like Twin Peaks in Hollyweird. It didn't get picked up so they tacked some bizarre ending on and released it to theaters. In the first part, you can see him introducing characters and subplots that go nowhere. There is a good site of theories about this film.

He is also of particular interest to me because I always wondered what he was involved with in Hollywood. My curiousity about the themes in his movies lead me down a path to my unraveling or as some call it, "awakening".
I still love Twin Peaks despite the dark seeds it planted in my brain. I have a love/hate relationship with the entire film industry right now!

This is a very interesting point, k. I missed Twin Peaks the first time round, but had the
pleasure of watching the whole bloody lot recently...my mate raves about him and this in particular, but I still didn't get it this time around. He remembers it from his youth which is part of the reason I think he remembers it so fondly.
I think you definitely have a point with it being aimed at teens and it was quite disturbing, when you actually try and summarise the story, which is basically: man in small community is raping his daughter, then kills her, then kills her cousin and some other people. It's ok though, as he's 'possessed'.
Sorry for the spoiler, but that's it in a nutshell.
I'm glad there are others here who didn't get it. I felt a bit out on my own with this one! A bit like being the only fucker alive who doesn't have an I-pod or uses Facebook.
