Genius or overrated tosser? I can't quite decide, though I'm leaning toward the latter. I do like his style and attention to detail, and certainly his characters can be entertaining. But there is an air of pretentiousness about his work that I struggle with, particularly his later stuff. To me, it feels a bit like he's doing 'weird' for the sake of it, if that makes any sense.

Am I wrong? Please discuss with me.

I liked Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks...not so much and as for Mulholland Drive. Fuck off. Just, fuck off.

Oh my, I swear was just talking about his movies earlier yesterday with a friend. Wild synch.

LOL Ab, I know what you mean about Mulholland Drive. I was wondering to myself... "Is David Lynch serious?!" :umm: :iitm:

I just found Blue Velvet in a thrift store recently and the best thing about it was Kyle Maclaughlin :P It was an alright movie though overall, quite sad and strange but the ending was at least happy.

I quite like David Lynch, I loved Twin Peaks :D First saw it when I was a teenager, I'd never seen anything like it before. I loved the whole atmosphere of it and the music was pretty good also

I always thought I was a bit 'odd' because everyone raved about him and I just thought his stuff was a bit dark and confusing and pretentious :hide:

Blue velvet was arlight but twin peaks was just ...........well .....odd, it didn't make sense.

He was all a bit 'Emporer's new clothes' to me .

However I did win the David Lynch collection on dvd recently so if any of you want it pm me and I'll post it onto to you.

Has David Lynch done something recently because he seems to be back on everyone's radar ?

Oh well :( Twin Peaks (especially the first series) is the only thing of his i've ever REALLY loved, the rest of his stuff i'm not that into, it's ok just not great IMO :) . Eraserhead freaked me out, I hated Lost Highway, Blue Velvet was alright but that Mullholland Drive was way too creepy for me. I saw a film called Surveillance that his daughter directed a few years ago that was pretty good

my take on twin peaks.

Man who is fbi agent goes to diner and has cherry pie.

Then he has some more cherry pie

Then some dwarves come ..who don't like cherry pie

people go to the blue lodge and the white lodge .......and some other coloured lodges

then the fbi guy has some more cherry pie

then he sees a mirror realises he is possessed and then has some more cherry pie

I just don't 'get' David Lynch nor Ken Russell, nor Peter Greenaway.

The cook, the thief his wife and his lover was one of the oddest things ever .

Great topic! Like Silverwand, it was Twin Peaks that grabbed me as a teen. I was a Peaks Freak!

Now I am a bit resentful of the mind fuckery I put myself through. David Lynch is like a mad genius, imo. I don't necessarily mean that in a good way, either. He is very effective(with his accomplice, Angelo Badalamenti) at using imagery and sound to really get under your skin a disturb on a subconscious level. But I guess that's just my bitter opinion.

It's kinda devious to have a show like Twin Peaks (which was very disturbing on many levels) geared toward teens. Once you become a fan, you will seek out his other work which is even more dark and deviant. Also, he really likes to show women being brutalized.

I could go on and on about David Lynch...I have so much to say about him. Lost Highway was like mental terrorism. Mulholland Drive was originally supposed to be like Twin Peaks in Hollyweird. It didn't get picked up so they tacked some bizarre ending on and released it to theaters. In the first part, you can see him introducing characters and subplots that go nowhere. There is a good site of theories about this film. www.mulholland-drive.net/studies/theories.htm

He is also of particular interest to me because I always wondered what he was involved with in Hollywood. My curiousity about the themes in his movies lead me down a path to my unraveling or as some call it, "awakening".

I still love Twin Peaks despite the dark seeds it planted in my brain. I have a love/hate relationship with the entire film industry right now!

Just one example of his disturbing use of noise. This one made my skin crawl so bad. When I would watch this movie, I would anticipate that moment and plug my ears(still creeped me out).

Yes :yepyep: I got the cd soundtrack to Twin Peaks years ago and I still have it, that music is so haunting/atmospheric it really does get under your skin. I'm not sure if that's a good thing but you are so spot on about the way he uses image/music to affect the viewer.
