Self-sufficiency is the state of not requiring any aid, support, or interaction, for survival; it is therefore a type of personal or collective autonomy. The term self-sufficiency is usually applied to varieties of sustainable living in which nothing is consumed outside of what is produced by the self-sufficient individuals. Examples of attempts at self-sufficiency include simple living, homesteading, off-the-grid, survivalism, DIY ethic and the back-to-the-land movement. Practices that enable or aid self-sufficiency include autonomous building, permaculture, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy. The term is also applied to limited forms of self-sufficiency, for example growing one's own food or becoming economically independent of state subsidies. What diy filters are an option? I mentioned the old fashioned type and tbf in combo with boiling, they're pretty good, but not perfect. Your whole community (whether it be one or a thousand of you) depends on not getting ill from your water.
I can't help but think a moss/gravel filter, followed by a charcoal one, would do the trick? Reed beds once established would be a great help for both the in and the out parts of the cycle. Obviously you'd have to find reed stock.
Exactly yes, sooner or later all the shelves will be bare. Which is why I am looking to the long term. Sustainability. That involves a whole new way of thinking for most of us.

there are I believe several ways of doing this: reed beds as has been mentioned, and boiling, there is also Carbon filtering using charcoal, Distillation using steam and Desalination.

Ah right. Ok, so's you know where I am coming from. I am very interested in the end of the world as we know it. Modern life is unsustainable in it's current form. The profit motive, is unsustainable. I am all for seeing it gone and replaced by a new paradigm. We don't have to wait for it. We can start right now. Many, many already have. Families, communities, lots have started to make this new paradigm work for them. Without reliance on the corruption that we call the system.
Ever since day one of the SZ, I've been trying to stimulate debate on this subject. I see survival techniques as intrinsically interwoven and am glad you are bringing your knowledge on them to the table.
Bring on the new paradigm :D

I always piss my self laughting when the SHTF subject comes up which includes survival techniques, several questions you need to ask yourself about survival blah blah blah.

How are you going to end up in a survival situation that requires you to "live off the land", build your own shelters, make your own fires and locate your own food , whilst defending yourself ?
Plane crash in remote region, if you survive without serious injury, then good luck. Chances of that happening :iitm:

Ahah, desalination! I used to live in Gibraltar. A place which for some reason is a disputed territory. It is largely cut off from Spain and has to supply it's own water. On the East side of the rock, there is a massive, solar desalination system. Direct solar. Not through elastictrickery.
The same principle as used by sailors. It's a bit of a slow process though as far as I know.

never gone very far into desalination TBH not something I have researched, just threw that onto the list as a possible option.
