Self-sufficiency is the state of not requiring any aid, support, or interaction, for survival; it is therefore a type of personal or collective autonomy. The term self-sufficiency is usually applied to varieties of sustainable living in which nothing is consumed outside of what is produced by the self-sufficient individuals. Examples of attempts at self-sufficiency include simple living, homesteading, off-the-grid, survivalism, DIY ethic and the back-to-the-land movement. Practices that enable or aid self-sufficiency include autonomous building, permaculture, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy. The term is also applied to limited forms of self-sufficiency, for example growing one's own food or becoming economically independent of state subsidies. its probably closer than you think, going on what is happening in the world today.
uh huh
I had enough of that crap from the likes of cathar/spellbound over on DIF. All the doomsayers, be they New Age, Fundy Xtians or Survivalists, seem to me to share a barely concealed enthusiasm for other people's suffering and death.
I'll put it your way...
They might "pretend" to warn or care by handing out advice and forecasts, but they don't. How can they? They don't know these people!

I don't have to imagine: I was in Japan, a couple of hundred miles from Fukushima when the Tsunami hit. We got a fuck of an earthquake at the time. In fact we had quite the bunch. Earthquakes are something that you HAVE to train for in Japan, of course. Along with typhoons and blizzards, landslides and eruptions. Nobody at these meetings refer to each other as "prepping mates" IIRC. That remains, it seems, the domain of back-slapping smug misanthropes that can't fucking wait for the SHTF moment. Fucking wannabes. Anybody coming through a real disaster does not tend to bring it up in every conversation IME. lonewolf wrote:

For you Obama lovers out there, he lets millions of illegals stay without being deported breaks thelaw and runs illegal guns into mexico and people get killed, and now on wednesday he is going to ban high capacity mags probably and most ar-15′s from honest hard working loyal americans. Who is the hypocrite. Nice leadership we have.
This is why we are raged beyond raged with this fake total piece of shit president who has no right and no morals but only his agenda. Then we have the biased news that stand behing paid actors and victims familes to try and push what they want.
Nice prep mates on your site. Given the choice, I would rather go "lone" , wolf. lonewolf wrote:

I wondered where you'd got too!!! because I've had a LIFETIMES experience of people letting me down, also playing mind games, so I now don't care if I woke up tomorrow and I was "Last Man Standing", in fact I would be overjoyed!!!

I think it fair to say that you are not alone in that experience. I myself have experienced all kinds of manipulation, back stabbing etc. But...
It hasn't led me to misanthropy. It has led me to understand that an awful lot of people are trapped in shitty mental/emotional traps. It has led me to understand that there are reasons why this is so and that none of us have ever had a level playing field.
It's led me to show compassion and empathy as much as I possibly can, even if some bugger takes advantage of it. It's their missed opportunity not mine if they do so.
What I don't get yet is why you opted for misanthropy.

WRONG Andy, I just don't DO people, all this bollox that is spouted about humans being "social animals", well this one AINT, I was brought up as an only child and I am happy with my own company, I prefer animals especially dogs to any so called human being.

we both had the experiences but you went one way and I went the other. I guess you went for the compassion and I said "sod em all!"
Tbf there are a myriad of options in nearly all situations. It's not a binary thing, this or that.
I mean, you could have opted to withdraw from wider society whilst maintaining hope that folk would get wise to themselves. You could have opted to go out and lovingly point out the error of certain folk's ways. You could have opted to carry on as normal whilst maintaining a protective shell....The list goes on.
But you chose to kind of wish everyone died.
That I find hard to understand, in the absence of an explanation.

its because I have had all the compassion drained out of me by a lifetime of experience of other people, I was also brought up to stand on my own two feet and sort out my own problems myself, not, as currently seems the vogue, to go blaming society, the govt, anyone but ourselves, that's one reason I got into survivalism, that and 9/11 and 7/7.like I said, I was brought up as an only child and spent a lot of time both as a child and later as an adult, on my own.

don't know really!! I was just surfing around, was on DIF but got bored of all the talk about aliens, magic and masons, some one invited me to go on TZ where I heard some remark about SZ took me some time to find out what SZ was but finally I found out-I've come off TZ completely today and here I am. I was hoping to interest some people about prepping but I think Mikey's put the kybosh on that!!

While I agree that one has to help oneself, I do not consider the government blameless of crimes against their populations nor do I think it courageous to blame the victims of their crimes for their own suffering. lonewolf wrote:

The standing on the two feet thang or the lack of compassion, or both?
Oh and leave mention of 9/11 out of it, please. It's such a tired excuse for all sorts of crap.
I think people decide for themselves what they're interested in. I'm not disinterested myself, but I think you need time on your hands to study & practice for such eventualities. Between working & looking after a family, I can only be bothered doing a bit of larking about when I have free time at the minute.
At the risk of asking for something you may already have provided that I've overlooked, are there any good books on the subject?
Btw, you seem personable enough. I doubt you'd really be overjoyed at our demise.

I genuinely feel for you on that but you've already said you have a partner so you do know not everyone is 'bad' (unless your partner is and you're into masochism )
I was also brought up to stand on my own two feet...
And yet you were content to live off the labours of others when you got DLA. Others who you don't mind if they die

I don't think you're alone here in understanding that it's us folk that permit things to be as they are. I don't see that as a reason for us all to be worthy of death though. As for spending a lot of time alone, that also isn't a reason for misanthropy. There has to be a deeper reason.

both.
So you can confirm for me, that at least in your case, the survivalist movement is motivated partly by misanthropy. Thanks.
I wonder how many more of your prep mates are motivated by misanthropy and whether that indeed is the reason why they seem to look forward to the DHTF moment, despite the slaughter and suffering.
