What the hell is the admin of this forum doing banning people any way? The practise is juvenile and hypocritical given the sentiments behind this forum.
Hmmm, I have to disagree with you there Fairyelfdog. If someone came onto the forum and was extremely abusive and harrassed members, they shouldn't be banned?
What if someone was constantly racially abusing a member? Or stalking one of our female members saying horrible sexual things to her?
Firstly all members bothered by this hypothetical troll has the option of putting him on ignore. Secondly, you can make a subforum where you put all abusive crap so that it doesn't litter up good threads, then people still have the choice to view it if they feel so inclined but they also have the clear choice not to read it, contrary to if it just appears in a thread you read. Can you block someone from PM-ing you? One should be able to, I think. People need to be able to handle life as it is without a parent-figure stepping in and sorting things out when they get too difficult. Generally speaking if we never learn that we will never be independent and sovereign and then basicly we're screwed. We need to do in microcosm: our forum what we want for the macrocosm: the world.
Unfortunately, we don't have the option of "ignore" here. It must be reiterated again: this is NOT the dif.
I would also go along with the points already raised, as I feel it is of major importance to 'us' and what we are about: bannings don't tend to happen on the whim of a mod or anyone in admin.
Here, they occur because members complain or vote if someone is causing aggro. It's generally a consensus thing, unlike other forums.
Where there is victimisation or bullying involved (although I don't recall what the reasons behind this banning were) I'd say that's pretty much an open and shut case. I like that about this place, which is why I choose to return. If someone doesn't like that element of how we roll, I can't imagine why they'd be that bothered or indeed want to return?
EDIT: It would also make me think twice about returning if things were allowed to descend into the state that other forums seem to be OK with, and tbh, it would make a bit of a mockery of everything everyone here has worked so hard to achieve so far.
