However, IF and when the option is ever available, I do think we should either grant access to the news, general or create and grant access to a guest only section of the forum. People will eventually be interested in the rest of it and want to say something and create an account to do so.

If it's something people want to review after a while, possibly when there's been an upgrade, enabling a trial on one section only, would it be considered premature to close this thread, so that attention can be focussed on more immediate concerns?

huge no to guest posting - i think we need to sort our own shit out before we let randoms start chucking theirs around. It is something that could be revisited once we have regrouped and refined our practices - I dislike to think the worst of people but i imagine that for every 1 new and awesome poster there will be 10 trolls/bots that will need removing/dealing with and we really need to think about what we would be opening ourselves up to from a legal standpoint anyone could literally post anything.

As for closing the thread if it has served its purpose may as well close it until such a time comes we want to revisit it.

fyi, another new feature.. guest posts can be set to only appear once approved by moderators. If this is enabled, nothing would get through unless a moderator approves it first.

a 'pending' link appears in the relevant category and mods can see it, click on it , read the post and then decide to approve it which publishes it, or bin it.

If it's to be considered again, we'd need to establish whether the facilitators etc would be prepared to spend the extra time filtering guests' posts.

if it was ever tried, my personal suggestion would be one of the top three cats... members chat, general or todays news.

just to clarify, the moderator post approval thing can be turned on or off. if its off, guest posts go straight up and are visible.
