I voted No to keeping the Karma Indicator, mostly because I think some people cant help but take it a bit too seriously. So I personally would prefer to see it gone.

It can simply be set to not display.

I voted 'no' to keeping it.

The positivity of being able to use the + is outweighed by people being sneaky in their use of the -, imo.

I seem to remember a similar poll on the DIF before I came here. I said it was a daft idea then having an in-built popularity contest, it still is.

That would cut both ways because people agreeing with a comment that they may not want to agree on in public could use a K plus. Swings and roundabouts.

True - hadn't thought about that.

It wasn't supposed to change your mind. I was just making the point that it works both ways. If someone has said some thing some one thinks is BS and gives a minus surely that is down to them. Why would they need to announce it? How is sneaky good karma any different to sneaky bad Karma.

Removing it will work to the advantage of people who consistently post things in a style or about things others don't agree with, because there is no option available for them to indicate their disapproval, without posting and getting dragged down by the very thing they disapprove of. (That's not meant to change your mind it's just a comment on how it has an effect.)

Yeah people should just tell me to my face. People can still thank you to a person that disagrees with me if they want to be like that.

Well I guess some people would rather not be confrontational and give the credit where it's due. I agree they could thank another person for posting something they agree with if there is something posted that is in line with their thinking. How would you suggest they do that if they don't like the fact that someone is using a negative tone, actively bullying or acting cliqueish blar blar blar? There could be any number of reasons why people may feel like marking someone down. Which means the only members who benefit are the ones who people don't want to get drawn into conflict with. Personally I think someone squealing like a stuck pig because they lose a Karma point says far more about them than the person issuing the negative point. Some peoples attitude to the Karma system is laughable. Its a bloody forum for Christ sake it's not like the universe is keeping an eye on it or anything.

I have not seen anybody squealing like a stuck pig over it to be honest. Also you could argue that karma points could be used to bully. Yes it is just a forum on the Internet but I think the point of the question was to get an idea of how people view the feature. There are other forums without this feature after all. It isn't a huge important topic just like "do you want ice in your drink" kind of thing.

And I was acknowledging that that's right and I hadn't considered it - not suggesting you were trying to change anyone's mind.

No, I think I raised elsewhere, here, that I think it's legitimate to express your disapproval by using the minus, without posting, if you don't wish to get dragged into a tedious battle. Personally (though others disagree) that doesn't bother me.

It's purely the situations where a couple of people have thought they're victim to someone (maybe plural) running some kind of on-going grudge against them by doing it all the time that doesn't seem wholesome to me. I'm not keen on that aspect.

Yes that's true, but then people can choose to not read posts by people whose opinion they find unpalatable, or to argue the points. Or they could make a comment, then back out, instead of choosing to get deeply embroiled.

If somebody hits a minus sign then says nothing then nobody but them knows why. If you disagree with something say so. I don't think there is any point in zeroing a karma thingy.

I say get rid.

I've not been dishing out karma points much recently, I've started forgetting it's even there.
