The only thing that's niggling at my mind here, is the impression that being offered a mod role is somehow beneficial, or a priviledge to the person being offered.

I suppose it's an acknowledgement that that person is believed to be well balanced, unbiased, intelligent & articulate, so in a sense, it's a compliment.

But since the mods here have no 'power' as such, I think it's about time people realised that the only difference between a mod & other members, is that the mods do some work on our behalf, for free. And from my observation, they get a bit of stick into the bargain.

Well this proposal would mean they have one less thing to worry about. I'd personally agree with dubs and would aim to get their workload down to zero, that's my understanding of a community in action, we share the load.

I see what you mean (& am in agreement re voting) but everybody can't have access to the cockpit, as it were, purely because it wouldn't be practical.

First of all I absolutely agree with the proposal that ideally the community should nominate mods. When we discussed that briefly in chat last night I encouraged Oi to bring it up.

It was also why I said I would only take on the role if the community approved.
There was no further discussion or opposition to that, it was exactly what happened next.
Possibly it was going to be the next stage anyway and I had pre-empted it when responding to the courtesy of the enquiry.

Secondly and I do think importantly.
There is a carry over impression from another place of what a mod is or their motivations may be.
That frankly gets my back up.

Modding is a shit job. It's not control freakery, it's janitorial duties.
You take it on because the community matters to you and you're prepared to roll up your sleeves and pick up shit in the playground.
It's crap having to make a decision to ban someone or edit out offensive or legally threatening material.
Really crap!
You go through all kinds of dilemmas to make that call. Only to have aspersions cast in your direction as a result.

There is also a reluctance to take on the role because suddenly it's open season on your motives and character.
You lose, and have lost, good people because of that game.

In a perfect world everyone would moderate themselves, there would be no trolls, no spammers, no attention-seeking disruptors, hackers and everyone would stay calm, respectful and lovely. We don't live in a perfect world though. Shit gets flung around and it can either stay stinking the place up or someone can try help to tidy up.

No-one makes money here, no-one is paid.
The site is here because DG ante'd up out of his own pocket.
Frog and Novum chip in their professional skills for free to put it together and others gave up their time to take on a bit of extra effort to help make it work.
For what?
Endless criticism. Is it a surprise then that people end up going "nah, fuck this"?
There is no manual comes with this stuff.
Every situation is unique.
Genuine errors will occur. we've all made them in life.

I'm 100% supportive of community discussions on improvement and refinement. In fact I believe it's essential.
but let's do that by all pulling in the one direction eh? Let's drop the suspicion and division nonsense.

I'm the same person who posted nonsense last week as the one who picked up a brush and shovel this week.
Same with the other guys.

Let's move on from that mindset.
This site is different because we want to make it different. Or we can carry on as before, carting the same old luggage around and watch it crumble.

Well said, Feather.

I sincerely hope picking up the brush & shovel this week isn't going to stop you from posting nonsense (and your usual sagacious comments) though.

Bah, let not feva's fine and eloquent post fool you. we all know that mod rhymes with god, plod and some other words. that's all the proof needed, they are all (2 of em) guilty as charged. now is the time for action not silly rhyming words.
i say get spamming the joint whilst feva's fingaz are still unused to the buttons on the control deck. make the most of this brief peiod of his noobness. ultimately this is our best opportunity to get to the end of level boss, the sket. with her hands full of pumpkins, bats and bobbing apples she will be unable to repel our spam, off topic posts and incorrect thread placements (although i dont think she'd give ashit about those anyway)
anyway...internet death to all mod god plod

Do we need a separate thread to discuss proposals to have mods removed?
