Can you realistically stop this? Is it possible to accurately detect multiple accounts from the same IP?

Yes - it's only a problem where people mask their IP address (though the very fact that they come on with a masked one should give a heads up) or assume a false one which can be done. Some experts use one IP after another in huge numbers.

It's possible to compare IPs, yes. Doesn't conclusively prove a sock, andyh and sarh share an IP.

I couldn't figure out the contact form request thing and it would never let my message through, that's why I had to make a new name, but I never tried to hide it and would openly say who I was if asked

But moderators I'm happy with the Baron name so thanks

You'd have to worry about the mental state of someone that was willing to do this.

It's the only way to get back on DIF if banned. Ah, I see your point! :chuckle:

:hahano:

I agree with the VI thing, not doing it, the thought has crossed my mind before.

And name changes havent really been discussed either, but from the beginning we would just change em if someone asked, i dont really see the big deal if someone is tired of their username and asks the mods for a change, and it means that members have less of a reason to create multiple accounts. Its probably more upfront this way than if name changes arent allowed and members who dont like their name anymore for whatever reason decide to start over.

If someone socks up and its figured out, and they still have another active account, personally i dont think both accounts should be banned, id prefer the mods and members discuss and ask why the member did this and which single account they would like to use, and make any other account(s) VI.

The record here so far is 4 accounts from the one user, and they werent upfront with some of em...at one point 2 were active at the same time... when it was solely on me to spot them, i just did what i thought was common sense, i PM'd said member and told them to pick one, and the rest go VI. And that is what happened.

So.....

VI is not an option for users, logging on is.

Name changes are fine as long as everyone is aware of it.

Socks go.

That sound about right to everyone?

You sound very logical and fair on this, I agree with your opinion

And maybe if you can find out why it's so hard to use the contact forum option if one try's to get their account activated again

i just tested it now, seems to work ok, and others have used it also.

Point missed entirely.

The only way back on DIF is with another name.
