Wetherspoons plan to open pub in motorway services

Wetherspoon is to open a new pub at a motorway service station

Email

Pub chain JD Wetherspoon is to open a premises with a 24 hour licence at a motorway service station.

It has been granted permission for the round-the-clock operation at junction 2 of the M40 at Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire.

It will have a licence to serve alcohol from 8am to 1am, seven days a week.

The pub chain was forced to make a statement defending its plans, amid fears that it would encourage drink driving.

A spokesman said much of Wetherspoon's sales came from food and that it also served non-alcoholic and hot drinks.

"We don't see any problem," he said.

"We believe the majority of people that use the pub to drink will be people that aren't driving - coach parties or people travelling with others.

"We won't be asking them whether they are driving. It's up to them."

He pointed out that motorway drivers were already able to purchase alcohol easily if they wanted.

Chairman Tim Martin said he hoped it would be the first of many such pubs on Britain's motorway network.

It comes amid a Government consultation on lifting restrictions on alcohol sales at motorway service areas.

The pub, which has yet to be given a name, is expected to be open by Christmas.

The company said it had received no objections to the plans after meeting representatives from Thames Valley Police and South Buckinghamshire District Council.

It said the £2m development with service area operator Extra would create 50 jobs.

Mr Martin said: "We are looking forward to opening our first licensed bar and restaurant on the motorway network.

"The company has always been innovative and this is an exciting new development for us. Hopefully it will be the first of many Wetherspoons on the motorway."

Professor Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation, said: "Most drivers are sensible, but you have to question a policy that encourages drivers to pull off to take a break and then offers them up a pint."

However he pointed out that Home Office figures last year showed at least seven other service areas where alcohol was served. Some of these were apparently at hotels.

The Home Office has been consulting on a law currently banning the sale of alcohol at some motorway service areas.

A spokeswoman said: "The Government's Alcohol Strategy consultation, which includes looking at the sale of alcohol in motorway service areas, closed on 6 February. We will listen to all views and set out our response in due course."

I see no harm in it I suppose.
I'm not one for banning stuff :p

Actually there's some places in dire need of motorway services such as the A66, parts of the A1, etc.
Its easy to come off a ferry at night and carry on going and come to regret it after a while when there's nowhere to bloody stop and kip lol.

Wetherspoons wifi has come in handy a few times.
If I'm a passenger I'm not gonna grumble at being able to have a pint somewhere for a bit of a break. Thing is I'll need a piss about 45 mins afterwards which will mean stopping off again... at another Wetherspoons... they've thought this through!

Would you like to be tempted into drink driving while you're just having a quick piss sir? The ads on the urinals suggest twill be for the best.
Go on.... go on.... everybody else in the car will be having one.
Just have a short... you won't be over the limit.
You might as well.... it's only a boring motorway drive back you'll be reet.
If you have something to eat as well, that will absorb the booze anyway. But you'll obviously be there twice as long.

There's alcohol available almost everywhere. Last place that needs it is a fucking motorway.

You need only pull off any junction and you'll find a pub. Up to the drivers imho.
If you ban stuff then you don't have a free market, simple as.

If anything should be banned it's motorways! I've spent quite enough time trundling up and down them nearly getting killed on numerous occasions, I hope I never have to go on one again.

Cars and roads are inherently dangerous. People are dangerous behind the wheel of a car if they're stone cold sober. You could build cars that cruised at 70 MPH and never went above the speed limit. You could make qualifying for a driving licence much harder, and make it more difficult to hold on to one if you're a shit driver. These things don't happen because the oil and automotive industries are hugely powerful. Thousands of people get killed on the roads every year, and hundreds of thousands are injured. There are probably people who are less dangerous when over the legal limit for alcohol than many people who have no points on their licence!

Good point Andy. I find downing a bottle or white lightning b4 I even hit the m5 helps to relieve the tedium of endless straight miles.

Andy does make a good point. If you are the type of person to drink and drive you probably have a cooler of beer in your vehicle. There should still be a law against it in my view but I don't think you can solve a problem simply by banning something. Drivers falling asleep is a big problem. Stopping and stretching the legs helps.

When I first heard this, I thought bad idea, but as Andy says, drivers who fancy a pint will often just pull off at the junction and find the nearest pub. There often is one within the first few miles after you leave the motorway anyway (quite often, nearer than that). And if you drive on the A roads, there are pubs anyway. I've often driven down the A1 from Yorkshire to Essex, but never once have I stopped in one of the pubs on the way - so it is up to the indivdual.

I agree the test should be tougher, if people had to pass a class 1 hgv or psv test then the roads would be bloody quiet :)
The test centres would love this ofc, imagine the income from repeat failed tests lol.
