This is a report ITV Calendar did on Ben Needham's disappearance.. The dates are July 29 and 30 1991. It took 5 DAYS for reports of his disappearance to reach the British Press...
The disappearance of Ben Needham (born 29 October 1989 in Sheffield) occurred on 24 July 1991 when the 21-month-old British child went missing on the Greek island of Kos.. Despite numerous reported sightings over the years, no trace of him has ever been found.. It is one of the longest missing persons cases in British history...
On the day of his disappearance Ben had been left in the care of his grandparents while his mother went to work at a local hotel. He was playing outside a farmhouse the family were renovating when, at approximately 2.30 in the afternoon, the adults realised he had disappeared...
In 2003, private investigator Ian Crosby made a visit to Kos with Ben's uncle Danny, and further visits to meet with Greece police. Crosby has also investigated a photograph, sent to him by a holidaymaker who visited Turkey in 1999, which depicts a number of Turkish village children, including a blond boy who resembles the age-progression photo of what Ben might look like aged 13.. Crosby said "I get many hundreds of reports every year from people on holiday who think they have seen Ben. It is impossible to investigate many of these claims. It is very sad to realise how little is actually done to find missing children like Ben and Madeleine McCann. Many British people who I have discussed Ben's case with are amazed when I tell them that no British police officer has ever travelled to Kos or Greece in connection with Ben's case. I even offered to pay for police officers to go, my offer was turned down. Sadly it remains therefore highly unlikely that the majority of children in these types of cases will ever be found."
The Needham family believe that Ben was kidnapped with the intention of being sold for adoption or taken by child traffickers...

CRA is a partnership between the police, the press and the public. Its aim is to locate abducted children and bring them to safety by using the media to promptly publish details about an abducted child's disappearance.
If the public have information that may help locate the child, they are asked to call 0300 2000 333...
Only calls about a current CRA should be made to this number. The number is donated by Cable and Wireless and is available only when a CRA has been activated.
The CRA system is compatible with other European Child Alert systems, so that concurrent alerts can be launched across EU country borders.
The new nationally co-ordinated Child Rescue Alert was launched on International Missing Children's Day, May 25 2010...

The disappearance of Madeleine McCann (Born 12 May 2003 (age 10) occurred on the evening of Thursday, 3 May 2007, in Praia da Luz, a resort in the Algarve region of Portugal. Madeleine, from the UK, was on holiday there with her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, her twin siblings, and a group of 7 family friends and their 5 children, when she went missing from her parents' holiday apartment 9 days before her 4th birthday = 13.. ...
Madeleine and her siblings had been left at 20:30 in a bedroom in the ground-floor apartment, while her parents ate with their travelling companions in the resort's tapas restaurant 50 metres (54 yards) away.. The parents or friends checked on the children throughout the evening; Madeleine's mother discovered she was missing at 22:00. The Portuguese police at first assumed she had wandered off or had been abducted, but after misinterpreting a DNA analysis conducted by British forensic scientists they came to believe she had died in the apartment..The McCanns were named as suspects (arguidos) in September that year, but were cleared in July 2008, along with a local resident also named as a suspect, when Portugal's attorney-general closed the case...The McCanns continued the investigation using private detectives, and in May 2011 Scotland Yard launched a case review, called Operation Grange, at the request of the British Home Secretary...
Madeleine Beth McCann (born 12 May 2003, in Leicester, England) lived with her parents and younger twin siblings, brother Sean and sister Amelie, in Rothley, Leicestershire..She has straight blonde hair, blue-green eyes, and a small brown mark on the calf of her left leg. Her right eye has a distinctive mark, known as a coloboma, on the iris: the pupil runs into the iris in the form of a dark strip from the pupil to the edge of the white...Kate Marie McCann (née Healy; born 1968 in Allerton, Liverpool) is a general practitioner (GP). Before the disappearance she worked as a part-time GP in Melton Mowbray. Kate studied medicine at the University of Dundee, qualifying in 1992, and specialised in gynaecology before moving into general practice. Both are practising Roman Catholics..
In the days leading up to the disappearance, there had been several sightings of men behaving oddly near apartment 5A..1 girl, whose grandparents used to own 5A, told police after the disappearance that on Monday, 30 April, she had seen a man – described as Caucasian, mid-30s, wearing a black leather jacket and sunglasses, and "ugly" with spots – leaning with his palms against the wall near the apartment. She said she had seen him again on 2 May near the car park by the resort's pool and tapas restaurant, apparently watching 5A...
Thursday, 3 May, was the 6th day of the family's week-long holiday. The children spent the morning in the Kid's Club while the parents went for a walk, then the family lunched together at their apartment before heading to the pool. The last known photograph of Madeleine was taken by the pool at 14:29 that day, sitting next to her father and 2-year-old sister..The children went back to Kid's Club and at 18:00 Kate returned with them to the apartment, while Gerry went for a tennis lesson..
The McCanns put the children to bed around 19:00. All 3 were sleeping in a bedroom overlooking the car park and garden area, near the back door of the apartment and the street, the opposite side of the apartment from the swimming pool.. The Twins slept in travel cots and Madeleine in a single bed, with her princess blanket and a pink soft toy, Cuddle Cat, next to her. She was wearing a pair of short-sleeved, pink-and-white Marks and Spencer's Eeyore pyjamas..There was one, shuttered, window on the opposite side of the room from Madeleine's bed, looking onto the car park..The parents left the apartment at 20:30 to dine with their friends at the resort's open-air tapas restaurant, which was a 50-metre (160 ft) walk to the other side of the pool from their apartment...The staff at the tapas restaurant had left a note in a staff message book asking that the same table – which overlooked the apartments – be block-booked for 20:30 every evening for the group the McCanns were travelling with. The message said the children were asleep in the apartments; Kate has wondered whether the abductor saw this note in the staff book, which was left at the swimming-pool reception area..At around 21:05 Gerry entered 5A to carry out the 1st check. he recalled having left the bedroom door only slightly ajar and now it stood almost wide open; he said he pulled it back to a 5-degree position before returning to the restaurant...
– on his way back to the tapas restaurant from his 21:05 check. He stood chatting to Jeremy Wilkins, a TV producer he had met at the resort. Neither man noticed Tanner as she walked past them..At around 21:15 she noticed a man cross the road in front of her, walking quickly along Rua Dr Agostinho da Silva, the road the McCanns' apartment was on, heading out of the resort.Another member of the group, Jane Tanner, left the restaurant to check on her own daughter..At around 21:15 she noticed a man cross the road in front of her, walking quickly along Rua Dr Agostinho da Silva, the road the McCanns' apartment was on, heading out of the resort.. She said he was carrying a child who was wearing white or light-coloured pink pyjamas with a floral pattern, and cuffs or turn-ups on the pyjama bottoms; the child, whose feet were bare, was lying horizontally and limply in the man's arms. Tanner assumed the child was a girl because of the style of the pyjamas..
She described the man as white, dark-haired, of southern European or Mediterranean appearance, 35–40 years old, wearing gold or beige trousers and a dark jacket, and said he did not look like a tourist.. His height was given as 1.7 m (5 ft 7 in)... According to Kate, Tanner passed the information to the police as soon as Madeleine was reported missing, but the description was not given to the media until 25 May...50 minutes later, at around 22:00, an Irish family saw a man on Rua da Escola Primária carrying a young girl and walking in the direction of Rua 25 de Abril. They described the girl as 4 years old, wearing light-coloured pyjamas, with blonde hair and pale skin.. They said the man was mid-30s, 1.75–1.8 m in height, with a slim-to-normal build, short brown hair, wearing cream or beige trousers..

As soon as Jane Tanner learned Madeleine was missing, she told Matthew Oldfield's wife that she may have witnessed the abduction.. At around 22:10 Gerry sent Matthew to alert the resort's 24-hour reception desk and to call the police, and at 22:30 the resort activated its missing child search protocol..The resort's manager said that 60 staff and guests continued searching until 04:30, at first assuming that Madeleine had wandered off. One of those involved told **Channel 4's** Dispatches that from one end of Luz to the other, you could hear people shouting her name..
The police said that officers arrived within **10** minutes of being alerted, and an investigation unit began work within 30 minutes.. Kate wrote in 2011 that 2 officers from the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) first arrived at 23:10 from Lagos,a town 5 miles away.. By midnight, according to Kate, the GNR had contacted the Polícia Judiciária, the criminal police, who she said arrived at 1 am from Portimão, 20 miles away.. According to Kate, a police officer placed tape across the doorway of the children's bedroom when they arrived, but she said they left for the night at around 3 am without securing the rest of the apartment.. Chief Inspector Olegário de Sousa of the Polícia Judiciária, who worked on the case, said that around 20 people had entered the apartment before it was secured, which may have destroyed forensic evidence.. According to the Portuguese police, two patrol dogs were brought to the resort at 2 am and 4 search-and-rescue dogs at 8 am..
Friends of the McCanns' friends contacted the media in the UK, and by early morning they were carrying the news. Gerry's sister in Scotland alerted the British Consulate in the Algarve, the British Embassy in Lisbon and the Foreign Office in London.Kate wrote in 2011 that the British police told her roadblocks were first put in place at 10 am. Interpol issued a global alert known as a yellow notice 5 days later..
The officer in charge of the case from May until October 2007 was Gonçalo Amaral, head of the regional Polícia Judiciária.. On 10 June 2007 Amaral was charged, along with 4 other officers, with offences related to the 2004 disappearance of Joana Cipriano, an 8 -year-old Portuguese girl who had gone missing from Figueira, a village 7 miles (11 km) from Praia da Luz... The police assumed she had been murdered, although her body was never found. The girl's mother and the mother's brother were convicted of murder after confessing during a police interview, although the mother retracted her confession 2 days later, saying she had been beaten by police.. Amaral was not present when she was allegedly beaten, but was accused of having covered up for others..In October 2007 Amaral was removed from Madeleine's case and from his post by Alípio Ribeiro, Portugal's national police director, after the former criticized British police in an interview. Amaral told a Portuguese newspaper that the British police were only following leads helpful to the McCanns. He went on to publish a book about the case in July 2008.. He was found guilty of perjury in May 2009 for having falsified documents in the Joana Cipriano case, and received an 18-month suspended sentence...

Date 13 March 1996 c. 9:30 a.m (GMT)...The Dunblane school massacre occurred at Dunblane Primary School on 13 March 1996. The gunman, 43-year-old Thomas Hamilton (b. 10 May 1952), entered the school armed with 4 handguns, shooting and killing 16 children and 1 adult before committing suicide.. Along with the 1987 Hungerford massacre, 1989 Monkseaton shootings and the 2010 Cumbria shootings, it remains one of the deadliest criminal acts involving firearms in the history of the United Kingdom... He was carrying 743 cartridges (743 is a Sophie Germain prime number..For example, 23 is a Sophie Germain prime because it is a prime and 2 × 23 + 1 = 47, and 47 is also a prime number...), and fired his weapons 109 times..After gaining entry to the school, Hamilton made his way to the gymnasium and opened fire on a Primary 1 class of 5- and 6-year-olds (5 and 6 form a Ruth–Aaron pair under either definition), killing or wounding all but 1 person..15 children died together with their class teacher, Gwen Mayor, who was killed trying to protect the children.. CAIRO, May 15 2009 (IPS) - A surge in reports of missing children has set off alarm across the Egyptian countryside.‘Provinces on fire with kidnapping rumours; every day more stories of missing children’, read the May 1 headline of independent daily Al-Dustour..
For months now, the independent press has been carrying reports of the disappearance of young children, mostly from Egypt’s rural provinces. On Apr. 11 2 children from the Sharqiya province vanished without a trace; on Apr. 28, 4 young children – 3 of them under 6 years old – were reported missing in the northern city Mansoura. Dozens of other cases have been reported through this period..
According to sources cited in the local press, the cases have been most frequent in 4 Nile Delta provinces – Daqliya, Qalioubiya, Sharqiya and Gharbia – in addition to the Upper Egyptian provinces Minya and Beni Sueif. Precise numbers are difficult to ascertain, but 10 children reportedly went missing in the Upper Egyptian city Sohag – just south of Minya – in March alone..
“The streets of Sharqiya are plastered with photos of missing children, while schools are seeing absentee rates of up to 70 percent due to kidnapping fears,” Al-Dustour reported Apr. 17. “Imams at local mosques are warning parents not to leave their children unattended..

Over the weeks following her disappearance, Madeleine's parents implemented a successful publicity campaign that kept the disappearance in the public eye in many countries, resulting in a response to the disappearance that was wide reaching both in terms of the media and public reaction, though there was criticism that the media attention was excessive...Her photographs became some of the most reproduced images of the decade.. According to Julia Kennedy, there were 3,700 videos on YouTube in June 2008 under the search term "Madeleine McCann," and over 7 million Posts.. Around 500 million people watched an appeal screened at the FA Cup Final in 2007.. Rehling writes that some British tabloids had Madeleine in the headlines every day for almost 6 months; Sky News had her appear as a menu O-ption...
There was extensive criticism of the Portuguese police in the British media. The first police officers to arrive acted as if Madeleine had wandered off, which resulted in a failure to secure the crime scene. Madeleine's favourite toy, Cuddle Cat, was with her in bed on the night she disappeared, and was found still on the bed after she disappeared, but police failed to secure it or check for DNA the abductor might have left on it.. Neither border nor marine police were given descriptions of Madeleine for many hours after she vanished, and officers did not appear to have made extensive door-to-door inquiries...The police failed to ask for surveillance pictures of vehicles leaving Praia da Luz at the time of the disappearance, or of the road between Lagos and Vila Real de Santo António on the Spanish border.. Another mistake was misreporting the height of the man Jane Tanner and the Irish family saw carrying a child on the night of the disappearance. This was given in a Portuguese press release as 5 ft 7 in (1.70 m), but mistakenly appeared in the English version as 5 ft 10 in (1.78 m)...From 4 May 2007 onwards there were thousands of reported sightings in Portugal and elsewhere, including Spain, Morocco, Indonesia and Singapore...

Yet another reason to hate DynCorp’s guts: the United States-based multinational mercenary contractor has now been working to cover up its officers role in international trafficking. DynCorp holds a contract to provide UN police forces for Bosnia-Hercegovina. When she brought this evidence to the attention of DynCorp and the UN, DynCorp fired her. Partial solar eclipses can be observed more often than total solar eclipses because the Moon's distance from Earth is irrelevant and the area in which a partial eclipse can be viewed is much larger.. On October 12 1996 A- Partial Solar Eclipse took place...
Malala Yousafzai (Pashto: ملاله یوسفزۍ; Urdu: ملالہ یوسف زئی Malālah Yūsafzay, born 12 July 1997) is a Pakistani school pupil and education activist from the town of Mingora in the Swat District of Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. She is known for her education and women's rights activism in the Swat Valley, where the Taliban had at times banned girls from attending school..In early 2009, at the age of 11–12, Yousafzai wrote a blog under a pseudonym for the BBC detailing her life under Taliban rule, their attempts to take control of the valley, and her views on promoting education for girls.. The following summer, a New York Times documentary was filmed about her life as the Pakistani military intervened in the region, culminating in the 2nd Battle of Swat...
On 9 October 2012, a Taliban gunman shot Yousafzai as she rode home on a bus after taking an exam in Pakistan’s Swat Valley. The masked gunman shouted "Which 1 of you is Malala? Speak up, otherwise I will shoot you all", and, on her being identified, shot at her.. She was hit with one bullet, which went through her head, neck, and ended in her shoulder..2 other girls were also wounded in the shooting: Kainat Riaz and Shazia Ramzan, both of whom were stable enough to speak to reporters and provide details of the attack...The Taliban have been clear in their response to the assassination attempt in that they will continue to target her, despite her survival, with a spokesman saying, "The attack was a warning to all youngsters in the area that they would be targeted if they followed her example"..
After the shooting, Yousafzai was airlifted to a military hospital in Peshawar, where doctors were forced to begin operating after swelling developed in the left portion of her brain, which had been damaged by the bullet when it passed through her head.. After a 3-hour operation, doctors successfully removed the bullet that had lodged in her shoulder near her spinal cord. In the days immediately following the attack, she remained unconscious and in critical condition, but later her condition improved enough for her to be sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham in the United Kingdom for intensive rehabilitation. On 12 October, a group of 50 Islamic clerics in Pakistan issued a fatwā against those who tried to kill her, but the Taliban reiterated its intent to kill Yousafzai and her father, Ziauddin..The director of a brain injury program at another hospital reported that since Yousafzai was shot in the left side of the head, she may have weakness on the right side of the body in the future...Later updates on 20 and 21 October stated that she was stable, but was still battling an infection (a common but potentially serious side effect as a result of cavitating bullet wounds to the neck and skull which drive bone fragments into tissue). She was resting comfortably...On 3 January 2013, Yousufzai was released from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham to continue her rehabilitation at her family's temporary home in the West Midlands. On 2 February 2013, Yousufzai had a 5 - hour operation to reconstruct her skull and restore her hearing, and was reported in stable condition at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham...
Malala Yousafzai was born into a Muslim family of Pashtun ethnicity in July 1997 and given her first name, Malala, meaning "grief stricken", after Malalai of Maiwand, a Pashtun poetess and warrior woman.. Her last name, Yousufzai, is that of a large Pashtun tribal confederation that is predominant in Pakistan's Swat Valley, where she grew up. At her house in Mingora, she lived with her 2 younger brothers, her parents, and 2 pet chickens..She affectionately referred to the region as "my Swat.Yousafzai was educated in large part by her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, who is a poet, school owner and an educational activist himself, running a chain of schools known as the Khushal Public School, named after a famous Pashtun poet, Khushal Khan Khattak. She once stated to an interviewer that she would like to become a doctor, though later her father encouraged her to become a politician instead. It has also been indicated that she may have wanted to be a pilot...
The Taliban continued to destroy schools in the area. On 19 January, Yousafzai wrote "Five more schools have been destroyed, one of them was near my house. I am quite surprised, because these schools were closed so why did they also need to be destroyed?" But Yousafzai did not stop thinking about her education..5 days later in her blog, she wrote about studying for her exams: "Our annual exams are due after the vacations but this will only be possible if the Taliban allow girls to go to school. We were told to prepare certain chapters for the exam but I do not feel like studying...By February 2009, Yousafzai was back in Swat, but girls' schools were still closed. In solidarity, private schools for boys had decided not to open until 9 February, and notices appeared saying so. But no such notices had been displayed outside girls' schools.. On 7 February, Yousafzai and a brother returned to their hometown of Mingora, where the streets were deserted, and there was an "eerie silence". "We went to supermarket to buy a gift for our mother but it was closed, whereas earlier it used to remain open till late. Many other shops were also closed", she writes in her blog. Their home was burgled and their TV stolen...Yousafzai was interviewed on the national Pashto-language station AVT Khyber, the Urdu Aaj Daily, and Canada’s Toronto Star..On 19 August, she returned to Capital Talk, where she reiterated her desire to become a politician, naming Benazir Bhutto as an inspiration. She reportedly criticized President Zardari on television, saying "At times I think if Zardari’s daughter were studying in Swat the schools would have never shut down”...
SWAT ("Special Weapons And Tactics") is a commonly-used proper name for law enforcement units, which use military-style light weapons and specialized tactics in high-risk operations that fall outside of the capabilities of regular, uniformed police.. Polly Hannah Klaas (January 3, 1981 – October 1, 1993) was an American murder victim whose case gained national attention. At the age of 12, she was kidnapped at knife point from her mother's home during a slumber party in Petaluma, California, on October 1, 1993. She was later strangled. Richard Allen Davis was convicted of her murder in 1996 and sentenced to death..
On October 1, 1993, Klaas invited 2 friends for a slumber party. Late in the evening, a man (Richard Allen Davis) entered her bedroom, carrying a knife. He tied the 2 friends up, pulled pillowcases over their heads and told Klaas' friends to count to 1,000. He then kidnapped the weeping Klaas...
Over the next 2 months, about 4,000 people helped search for her. TV shows such as 20/20 and America's Most Wanted covered the kidnapping. At the time, Davis was a wanted man: the California Highway Patrol had issued an APB all points bulletin for a violation of parole for a previous crime; any police officer who encountered him could arrest him on that charge. (The bulletin was broadcast on the CHP channel, which only CHP radios could receive. CHP practice changed after the case. Such bulletins are now broadcast on all police channels.)
During the search, police officers encountered Davis in a nearby rural area, where his Ford Pinto was stuck in the mud. Unaware of the APB, the local police released him after calling his driver's license number in to their dispatcher (which only traced his driving record, but not his criminal record). It is believed that he then drove to an isolated spot, murdered Polly, and buried her in a shallow grave..
On November 30, police arrested Davis for violation of parole during routine patrol and the arresting officer recognized him from police sketches. As his palm print had been found in Klaas' bedroom, he was charged with the crime..4 days later, he led police to Polly's body near Cloverdale. Davis said that he strangled her from behind with a piece of cloth.. As the remains had decomposed for 2 months, there was no method to scientifically validate this statement...

The iris is a thin, circular structure in the eye, responsible for controlling the diameter and size of the pupil and thus the Amount of light reaching the retina.. The color of the iris is often referred to as "eye colour"..."Look" with the 1st "O" in the word being drawn in the shape of a coloboma radius extending from the pupil at the 7 o'clock position...
The word iris is derived from the Greek goddess of the rainbow, due to the many colours of the iris..In contrast, heterochromia and variegated iris patterns are common in veterinary practice. Siberian Huskies show heterochromia, possibly analogous to the genetically-determined Waardenburg syndrome of humans.. Some white cat fancies (e.g., white Turkish Angora or white Turkish van cats) may show striking heterochromia, with the most common pattern being one uniformly blue, the other copper, orange, yellow or green...Waardenburg syndrome is a rare genetic disorder most often characterized by varying degrees of deafness, minor defects in structures arising from the neural crest, and pigmentation anomalies.. Disruptions in myogenesis, particularly mutations in Pax3, can cause Waardenburg syndrome I and III...

Azaria Chantel Loren Chamberlain (11 June 1980 – 17 August 1980) was an Australian baby girl who was killed by a dingo on the night of 17 August 1980 on a family camping trip to Uluru (at that date known as Ayers Rock) in the Northern Territory. Her body was never found. Her parents, Lindy and Michael Chamberlain, reported that she had been taken from their tent by a dingo. However, Lindy was tried for murder and spent more than 3 years in prison. She was released when a piece of Azaria's clothing was found in a dingo lair, and new inquests were opened. In 2012, some 32 years after Azaria's death, the Chamberlains' version of events was officially confirmed by a coroner...
The Crown alleged that Lindy Chamberlain had cut Azaria's throat in the front seat of the family car, hiding the baby's body in a large camera case. She then, according to the proposed reconstruction of the crime, rejoined the group of campers around a campfire and fed one of her sons a can of baked beans, before going to the tent and raising the cry that a dingo had taken the baby. It was alleged that at a later time, while other people from the campsite were searching, she disposed of the body..A highly contentious forensic report claiming to have found evidence of fetal haemoglobin in stains on the front seat of the Chamberlains' 1977 Torana hatchback. Fetal haemoglobin is present in infants 6 months and younger and Azaria was 9 weeks old at the time of her disappearance..In her defence, eyewitness evidence was presented of dingoes having been seen in the area on the evening of 17 August 1980...Evidence was also presented that adult blood also passed the test used for fetal haemoglobin, and that other organic compounds can produce similar results on that particular test, including mucus from the nose, and chocolate milkshakes, both of which had been present in the vehicle where Azaria was allegedly murdered..1 witness, a nurse, also reported having heard a baby's cry after the time when the prosecution alleged Azaria had been murdered..Evidence to the effect that a dingo was strong enough to carry a kangaroo was also ignored. Also ignored was the removal of a 3-year-old girl by a dingo from the back seat of a tourist's motor vehicle at the camping area just weeks before, an event witnessed by the parents..The defense's case was rejected by the jury.. Lindy Chamberlain was convicted of murder on 29 October 1982 and sentenced to life imprisonment...
The final resolution of the case was triggered by a chance discovery. In early 1986, English tourist David Brett fell to his death from Uluru during an evening climb. Because of the vast size of the rock and the scrubby nature of the surrounding terrain, it was eight days before Brett's remains were discovered, lying below the bluff where he had lost his footing and in an area full of dingo lairs.. As police searched the area, looking for missing bones that might have been carried off by dingoes, they discovered a small item of clothing. It was quickly identified as the crucial missing piece of evidence from the Chamberlain case—Azaria's missing matinee jacket...Public and media opinion during the trial was polarised, with "fanciful rumours and sickening jokes" and many cartoons.. In particular, antagonism was directed towards Lindy Chamberlain for reportedly not behaving as a "stereotypical" grieving mother.. Much was made of the Chamberlains' 7-day Adventist religion, including false allegations that the church was actually a cult that killed infants as part of bizarre religious ceremonies, that the family took a newborn baby to a remote desert location, and that Lindy Chamberlain showed little emotion during the proceedings..1 anonymous tip was received from a man, falsely claiming to be Azaria's doctor in Mount Isa, that the name "Azaria" meant "sacrifice in the wilderness" (it actually means "God helped") Others claimed that Lindy Chamberlain was a witch...The press appeared to seize upon any point that could be sensationalised. For example, it was reported that Lindy Chamberlain dressed her baby in a black dress. This provoked negative opinion, despite the trends of the early 1980s, during which black and navy cotton girls' dresses were in fashion, often trimmed with brightly coloured ribbon, or printed with brightly coloured sprigs of flowers...
The dingo is the largest terrestrial predator in Australia, and plays an important role as an apex predator. However, the dingo is seen as a pest by sheep farmers due to frequent attacks on livestock. Conversely, their predation on rabbits, kangaroos, and rats is of benefit to cattle ranchers.. As is typical in domestic dogs, the dingo's relative brain size is smaller than that of all non-domesticated subspecies of wolves, being almost identical in size to that of dogs considered Canis lupus familiaris...It is widely held that dingoes have evolved or were bred from the Indian wolf or Arabian wolf around 6,000 to 10,000 years ago, as was assumed for all domestic dogs..Analyses of amino acid sequences of the haemoglobin from a "pure" dingo in the 1970s supported the theory that dingoes are more closely related to domestic dogs than they are to grey wolves or coyotes...DNA studies on Australian dingoes and domestic dogs were also undertaken with 5 of these being more closely examined. No genetic difference could be found...Compared to wolves and domestic dogs, the variation of mtDNA sequences was very limited. Among dingoes only twenty mtDNA sequences differing in 2 point mutations at most could be found...Compared to most domestic dogs, the bark of a dingo is short and monosyllabic and rarely used...Dingoes have three basic forms of howling (moans, bark-howls, and snuffs) with at least 10 variations. Usually, three kinds of howls are distinguished: long and persistent, rising and ebbing, and short and abrupt...Growling is seen to make up 65% of the vocalisations, and is used in an agonistic context for dominance and as a defensive sound...Unlike wolves, dingoes can react to social cues and gestures from humans...About 170 species (from insects to buffalo) have been identified as being part of the dingo diet. In general, livestock seems to make up only a small proportion of their diets...Dingoes often kill by biting the throat and adjust their hunting strategies to suit circumstances. For bigger prey, due to their strength and potential danger, two or more individuals are needed. Such group formations are unnecessary when hunting rabbits or other small prey..The dingo is connected to holy places, totems, rituals, and dreamtime characters...Dingo attacks on humans are rare but are known to happen. Dingoes are a danger to livestock, especially sheep and young cattle, which is why the Dingo Fence was constructed...In December 1933, when 3 girls went missing near Mount Coot-tha, the possibility of their having been attacked by dingoes was considered...Early Brisbane people called it One Tree Hill when bush at the top of the hill was cleared except for one large eucalypt tree...On 15 July 2012 14-year old Jabiru Kakadu, Australian girl woke to a dingo dragging at her sleeping bag (Kakadu National Park is a protected area in the Northern Territory of Australia, 171 km southeast of Darwin). To be better prepared for dingo attacks demands were made that a better recording of problematic cases should be implemented...
