As a general rule most civilisations that have a religion have a class/cast system,Religion is all about keeping the class system.

True, as in organised religion is all about dumbing down the masses and always has been (imo).

But, the British 'class system' is uniquely different to any other (again imo).

Its got very little to do with religion for a start.

The UK's class system is at the root of all social injustices that take place in this nation imo.

This class divide thing is absurd... Funny that this stuff still exists, it's so medieval.

I'd agree.

I always think it's funny though when people class themselves as Middle class and think they have succeeded or 'made good in the world' as they are no longer working class.

I don't think you can actually change class you are born into?

Likewise you have some upper class people who are completely skint, living in hovels or on the streets but they are still upper class if that makes sense

The biggest impact on the British class system happened when william the bastard became king of england, the norman royalty and the church went hand in hand (ie the class system) .

"The Normans brought a more organised and sophisticated clergy with them. They celebrated their devotion to Christ by building solid stone churches and cathedrals, many of which can still be seen today".

"Everyone was expected to attend on Sundays. The peasants had to stand and would not have understood a word of the Latin services read by the parish priest. They might have enjoyed the gory pictures painted on the walls though, showing Judgment Day and souls in torment".

The church was centre of village life. It told people how to behave in almost everything they did.

www.schoolsliaison.org.uk/kids/aston/cha.../norman/religion.htm

All around the world religion has helped cement the class system with the help of overlords, even those lovely Buddhists in Tibet were propping up a medieval style class system prior to 1951.

I used to work as the caretaker in a residential school for boys with behavioural issues.
One day I was having a "discussion" with one of the teachers about the historical exploitation of the "working class" by the "middle class". She piped up, " well you're middle class now aren't you, so you're having a go at yourself".
To whit I replied, "how am I middle class?"
"Well" She said, "you're working here now in education".

At which point I think this happened :O

But then the same person was once railing about the evils of blackthorn and how it was good for nothing. I commented that she wouldn't have her sloe gin if it weren't for blackthorn.
To whit she replied, "sloes grow on sloe trees not blackthorn bushes".

Again, I think this happened :O

So to extrapolate from there, I feel qualified to make a crass generalization.
If this was a middle class person.
What defines the Middle class is being, thick twats. :)

Middle class......

The strong horses that pull the carriage for the overlord's,and hope they get fed properly, and are treated well, and not worked to hard.

Middle class, blue collar, back bone of society, whatever you call them, for any country to survive, this group must be considered the most important in the work force, and always have opportunities for them to advance in their lives, and treat them with the utmost of respect, and their family's needs or special needs considered a issue to their employer and known about each individual employed.

My own would be:

1) Owns own business, self employed [ideally] ;)
2) Makes about US$100,000 - $250,000 in profits per annum. (but static income)
3) Owns own large home (thats at least 2 or 3 acres, 5 or 6 bedrooms+ IMHO) and land with no mortgage outstanding. [...]

I’d like to add that any outstanding debts surpassing 20 to 25 percent of annual income automatically disqualify you as middle class too.

Generally, people are under the misapprehension that they’re middle class because they have a mortgage (you have no idea how many people paying mortgages see themselves as ‘home’ owners, don’t get me started on that one), have a newish car on lease and a credit card.

Worse case of delusion I can cite is someone renting (with other ‘room mates’), working in starbucks and thinking they’re still middle class because of a university diploma. And they will viciously argue with you if you try to disabuse them of their fallacy.

Yeah I see it basically as the 'american dream' but all paid for in full and plenty of spending money for stuff you would regularly see and expect on tv such as car, holidays etc but actually they wouldn't have enough to be major stock holders etc.

I don't see qualifications as having anything to do with class, unless they're coming from eton/harrow/ivy league etc.

Lots of people think they're middle class these days. I think the English definition is more complex with the lower middle, middle middle and upper middle classes.

Upper middle and some middle middle will send their children to public schools. A public school education is a definite sign of being middle class (unless on a scholarship).

Last year a UK couple went public (idiots lol) after winning £160 million on the Euromillions lottery draw.

I'm sure they now own a big house outright with no mortgage etc etc, but does that now make them middle class, or upper class? No it doesn't and never will.

That sums up the British class system...

You're right, if they weren't middle class before they came into the money, they still won't be. They could do and say vulgar things that give would them away as having working class, or lower middle class roots.

Also, how the fuck did working class come to mean people who don't actually work? :conf: The UK class system is a funny old beast, but probably not as funny as the Hindu caste system.

Depends if they have an income on the money.
It makes them middle class now imho, upper if they play their cards right.

But thats purely from a financial perspective and thats all that matters imho.

I've had drinks with a few billionaires and some of them can come from lowly backgrounds, just got lucky etc.
There's actually a few of that type in Ireland.
