We must understand it in order that we may control it.
See also; exploration, climbing mountains, substitute warfare via sports etc.
We are dicks who can't and shouldn't be trusted with anything.

I bet most of those above believed they were on the side of right and were propagandised into disposing of/controlling the threat to their kind.
