Yeah Lidl pays better than most foodstores. The only one paying more I know of is Aldi who also operate in a similar manner. They pay well but have less staff so you earn your money working there. It also can mean lines out the door and people saying "only one till open"? When they say that I usually say yes my other member of staff is on break.

I can believe it - I've bought fruit & veg from Adsa few times that goes straight in the bin because when you come to use it the next day, it's gone bad. The local market's stuff is best, but it's a nuisance having to carry it halfway across town to the car / bus. I'm thinking of getting one of those 'old lady' shopping trolley on wheel thingys. :D

I'm not sure whether it's a Lidl or an Aldi near us. Tried it a couple of times, but I found the stuff hit & miss - some was good & some was naff.

It's very good for picking up odd camping bargains. They seem to just get a job lot of a particular line in & when it's gone, they replace it with something different.

A posh potato, who would have thought.

Could I put the food from waitrose on the same shelf in the fridge as the asda food or would I have to put the asda food bellow the waitrose food?lol

Snobs are amusing at best and soul destroying at worst.

Well at store level most stores have tiny warehouses so they don't have too much sitting there as a general rule. The managers order it daily at around lunch time based on sales and you get it the next morning and as somebody already alluded to " stack it high and watch it fly" is the name of the game.

And the stuff in the tables are weekly specials which do indeed last until sold out and some of those sell out within minutes. Thursday morning used to be specials day(maybe still is) and that used to be a busy morning, people waiting outside before we opened. That was a day many snobs came in for bargains oddly.

If the large chains are anything like Australia (and i suspect they are, since they have even flown Tesco management here to tell them how to improve business)

then the distribution warehouses for these corporations (where the food is sent before it goes out to the individual stores) would have large nitrogen filled storage/cold rooms. For those who dont know, nitrogen is heavier than air, and is used in the food industry to keep food from coming into contact with air/oxygen, which spoils food.

So when nitrogen is pumped into a room in the correct manner it displaces the air, and the food lasts a lot longer, sometimes fruit and veg keeps for months, and has been reported to be kept for months in exposè stories in Oz.

I would think the corporate storage warehouses in countries like China and india, where food production is being shifted to, would also have nitrogen storage/cold rooms, where fruit and veg is kept before being shipped to the west.

It's all about singling out the individual for scorn whilst enjoying being part of the majority. Cos being part of the majority means you won't be singled out for a chant or two.
Children, what utter bastards. :)

I've heard that song, but never understood it, because our local Tesco was a food shop. It was Maisies in my town, a little shop that sold clothes with stock that was seriously out of date. When I was in middle school, saying that someone shopped there was the ultimate in humiliation. However, once I was a teenager, we actually used to go in there to buy brightly coloured retro nylon vests and t-shirts. That was in the 90's and they sold old stock from the 80's and even 70's. It had a strange musty smell.

As in Hyacinth Bucket type snobbery? :D

I think most SZ members are inverted snobs. No offence meant btw.

No offence taken :)

I also think most SZ members are inverted snobs.

However much we might fight against it...we are a product of our upbringing. My parents were/are snobs so it rubs off on one. :D

I have to admit that I do have an inner snob that occasionally rears its ugly head. Over stupid things mainly. I recoil at the sight of flat pack furniture. :chuckle: There's more, but can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

Is it snobby to be contemptuous of the folk who wander around shops in their grotty, pyjamas? If so, I'm guilty!

The first time I saw this was about 22 years ago when I was running a couple of Victoria Wine branches, & a young woman climbed out of a taxi & strolled into one in a nightie & slippers for cig's & wine at about 4pm one winter' afternoon. I was a surprised, and innocently asked her if she was going to a fancy dress party. This apparently annoyed her, so diplomacy forbade me from asking if she wore jeans & a duffle-coat to bed. :umm:
