"According to the most conservative United Nations statistics, over 16,000 children die every day due to hunger-related diseases before they reach five years of age."

Is this because people don't use condoms or birth control in developing countries?

If a kid under age 5 dies from hunger is that not the parents fault?

What's the point of having kids that parents can't feed?

I never understood this.

Under age 5 :(

I live in the Western world (uk) and have fathered four kids. None of them were particularly planned, from my point of view at least.
But sex happens. Sometimes contraception isn't used.
I'm not sure that you can say to people in the poorest nations, or poorest conditions, "you can't have children because you can't support them".

I understand that, but 16,000 kids under age 5 starve to death each day...wtf

Is there anything in this world more painful or cruel than a kid under age 5 starving to death?

Should i assume all 32,000 parents have alreay died of the 16,000 kids who die.

Just saying, I hope none of the parents of the starving kids are alive.

There are probably posters here who could answer this far better than I could, to be honest.

I think a lot of the starvation in certain parts of the world (particularly Africa) is down to resources not reaching the people that need it and that is down to the Governments of the countries where this happens. Isn't it well documented that a lot of the Live Aid money ended up being diverted to arming the Government rather than feeding the hungry.
One of the problems is that if you have part of a country which is anti-government and ruled by "rebels", then any normal migration of goods won't happen. So if we come along and give loads of aid/food/goods to the Ethiopian Government (as an historical example) and say please give it to the poor in your country.. they won't because the poorest are stuck in the bit that the rebels are in control of..

So do you think the UN needs to go into Africa and take out the Rebels that cause all these kids to starve?

I don't really have any answers. That's what France seems to be doing in Mali at the moment., but essentially it's about access to Uranium, which France relies on for energy.

The UN is pretty toothless. There can be a genocide in Rwanda and not one Western nation will be interested in intervening, but if there's a country that might be a strategic location with or next to a country with strategic resources, then we (NATO countries) will be first in.

Vizier I understand what your saying about Rwanda.

I just was not aware that many kids under age 5 starve to death each day over there.

If it's because Rebels are in control like you say should the UN take them out?

I don't think they all starve. Not sure how accurate your figures are either but that is not the most important thing. Children die needlessly and that is something we should all try to fight. Babies die in USA and UK too.

UNICEF estimate it at 6.9 million. Still too many of course.

I think that in the west it is easy to write off Africa as primitive mud hut people but we have the same problems in the west. Sure the problem is more severe in more plundered countries but the problems are still much the same. I don't put one child's life above another. We need to address both.

I understand what you are saying...

But 1 out of every 9 babies that leave the hospital here in the US will not starve to death by age 5.

That's has to be one if not the most saddest statistics i have ever seen in my life.

My Grandmom would always give money to one of those save the starving kids commercials.

And they would send her a picture of the kid each year so she could see him grow up.

To me it was her intention that counted, i was young back then and would never had thought it was a scam.

Iv'e never been outside America for more then 2 weeks at a time.

And when i was outside the US i was never in Africa, India or South Asia where the kids are starving.

If 10 million kids under age 5 starve to death each year i assume that means 20 million parents had already died also.

It's gotta be the saddest most mind blowing statistics i ever heard in my life.

It must be the parents fault.

When these parents have finished work for the day can they not pop to the chippy or the supermarket on their way home in order to feed their kids?
What about the child minders? Surely they must be charged with feeding these kids whilst the parents are out?
I suspect they are probably stealing all the food from their employers fridges and lounging around the pool whilst the poor kids have to eat their xbox contollers just to get some nourishment.

Maybe some drone strikes would help teach these feckless parents a lesson. :D
