I just got back in from giving the new lambs here their evening feed. I got to thinking. Newborn lambs are undeniably cute. Something they have in common with other animals ofc. Ofc, the main reason they exist in the numbers they do is that they are also tasty.

So what the Fuck is up with that? Why can't cute things taste shite and tasty things look like sket?

It's true, Knobs (hahaha! that's such a silly name). I don't know why. My mate's husband goes shooting for rabbits, but she refuses to cook them because they look cute. But mainly we don't think about them as living critters when we're tucking into them with gravy.

That lovable 80s minstrel, Howard Jones wrote a song with the words, "children's stories with their farmyard favourites, at the table in a different disguise".

We all think bunnies and lambs look cute. How many of us think slitting their throats, gutting them and preparing the meat is an attractive pastime? "Aww you cute ickle wabbit, come yer and let I stick a knife in yer gizzard"

As someone famous once said (forgot who) - if God hadn't wanted us to eat animals, how come he made them out of meat!

I used to shoot rabbits as a part of my job. They tend to eat veg as you know.
One day I lined up a back of the head shot on one about 30 yards away. I slightly missed and hit it in the back of the neck, which instantly paralysed it's back end. Before I could get to it to dispatch it, it had dragged itself into the hedge line and down a burrow. Where it obv then went on to die a slow and cruel death. I've refused to do it ever since.
Similarly, I used to snare them. Until I checked a snare and found an 'innocent' that had got snared around the waist. It was still alive but fatally injured. Could have been like that all night. I've refused to do it ever since.

Nowadays, I eat very little meat. I certainly don't buy it. I do eat 'throwaway' meat though. To my mind putting an animal through all that just to chuck it's carcass in a bin is just plain wrong.

I don't eat meat because the production of it invariably involves causing pain and suffering and I don't need to eat it to survive in the environment in which I live. I therefore feel that by eating it I am causing suffering simply for own pleasure.
Additionally I do not like treating life a a commodity as the mass production of meat involves. I hate the word "livestock". Live. Stock. To me, it's a living creature, not someone's "stock". I think it was far better when people kept animals and killed them themselves, rather than them being a unit of production.
I think the way we treat animals mirrors the way we go on to treat humans - we go on to treat humans as commodities to be used and abused.

That said I buy meat for my cats. They're not arsed though and can't live without it.

I'm not as militant in my opinions as I used to be, but I still admire those that are. I think there's something pretty amazing about people who risk their liberty or even give their life for those who can't comprehend what's been done for them.














Myself, I don't care if an animal is cute or not. In the same way I don't think it would be better to hurt an ugly looking person than a beautiful looking one.

Great post DM and I hope you get that the op was rather tongue in cheek. I feel the same as yourself with regard to the farming of animals for meat. That's why i don't buy into it and support it. As I said though, I will eat meat if it would otherwise be binned.

what about meat that grows in a bin, like rats?
