No It means you won. Ask abs. We used to be tea bag pals til he abandoned me for pastures new.
my limbless friend will die alone
a torso of flesh upon the throne

Violence is not the answer, it is the question. the answer is yes.

It depends of course what you believe the self to be...hence your question.

So to me, self is a composite of mind, body and soul/spirit/emotion. Regardless of the different aspects, I believe these three make up the self, and to be in a state of submission we have to have given our minds, body and soul/spirit/emotion complete free reign to experience completely what we have chosen to learn from.

I agree that we are made up of the different aspects of mind/body and soul.

But the rest of your paragraph, I don't understand.

How do we give our body free reign to do anything? For the most part it is an autonomous entity that does what it does mostly in spite of us, all of our internal functions are regulated for the most part out of our control, yes we can feed it the correct nutrients, or not as the case may be but it will carry out it's physical processes quite happily without our Mind.

Which brings us onto our mind, what actually is it? Well all it is, is a programme that has been programmed by every sensual input that it has had since the brain was capable of storing inputs, it is nothing more than that and the entity that is doing this typing and whoever is reading this, is also a programmed entity from their very own programme.

Which leaves the soul spirit, it is the only thing left that we are capable of submitting to, the only thing that we should submit to, and that doesn't involve letting it make choices for us, it involves understanding, fully, that it is the most important aspect of us, in fact the mind and body are just the vehicle for the soul.

So, submission should come from us in understanding that the entity who we "think" that we are is not important.

But most people think that joe blogs is ultimately important.

When Jesus said "we should die to ourselves" this IMO is exactly what he meant.

But our power to discern, focus our intention and imagine is purely a construct of the inputs that our senses have taken in up until that point.

If you had been born in an Indian slum, then your powers would be a lot different to the ones you are endowed with now.

We have no option but to be passive, we can't control anything.

It is when we try and not be passive that we have problems, we really cant control anything.

Although the illusion makes us think that we are all powerful.

We really aren't.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. Up until quite recently, 'the illusion' has done anything but lead me to believe that I am 'all powerful'. I've spent many, many years believing the exact opposite, and I'm starting to suspect that this belief is exactly how I got where I am now. Since birth, various people and institutions have tried to hammer home just how powerless and at the mercy of the environmnent around me I actually am.

Lately however, I've begun the process of actually looking around for myself and making a conscious effort to evaluate the information that my senses are receiving. Rather than accepting other people's paradigms and views of how the world is, I am beginning to consciously make my own.

It's actually quite exciting and not as difficult as you might think. I'm spending less and less time focusing on my powerlessness and acceptance of the myriad of shitty things happening on a daily basis and more and more time watching for clues that I'm on the right path and giving my attention (emotion/energy) to those things I wish to experience more of. It really is as simple as that...for me at least.

And that's the great thing. You either agree or you don't. You have that choice...yet another wondrous facet of our existence.

For me also, it has nothing to do with trying to control everything. That's too big a task for me at present, and to my mind, would kind of take the fun out of being here at all. There are many varied subjects and issues to choose to give my attention to. I do not wish to control any aspect of the life I am experiencing. I believe where we get stuck or hung up however, is not realising that it is within our power at any given moment to direct our attention elsewhere or focus on something other than that which is making us feel so 'powerless' in the first place.

By not ackowledging that 'creative' power, if you like, you are denying yourself access to a whole host of other, more joyful experiences. If you are continually told that the world is black - and you believe it - you will just see black. Doesn't necessarily make it so. Go see for yourself. In this regard, passivity of the mind can be your worst enemy. I speak from experience.

It sounds like you are becoming conscious

Enjoy the ride..... :)

Dunno about that...

I think everything/one is conscious to begin with, but humans in particular, have the capacity to push that stuff to the back of their minds and focus their attention/energy. The trick we fall into is focusing mainly on the external and ignoring the internal, which is always there, eager to communicate and make life a little more enjoyable. We're taught from birth to ignore it...and we do that pretty well for the most part.

So, it's less about 'becoming' conscious....more 'remembering'.

Came across this little ditty recently actually (or rather, was prompted by something to pay attention to the lyrics), which sums up my thinking - or rather, FEELING - on the matter quite succinctly. ;)

It isn't some kind of trap or dare I say 'conspiracy' to ignore that aspect of your self, either. It's supposed to be that way, until such a time as you decide otherwise. That's the fun of the game for many!

Yes, Everything and everyone is conscious.

And you are correct "in a way", our mind clouds our consciousness, it becomes all powerful and convinces us that it is in control, when in fact it isn't, it is only as powerful as the inputs it has had, it can never be more powerful than that, it is impossible.

What do you mean when you say we must focus on the internal? What is internal to us that we must focus on and how are we taught to ignore it?

I agree with you that we shouldn't ignore our path, and we get indications of it all of the time but most just ignore them, but from personal experience, the more you accept the signs, synchronicities, the more they happen and the clearer your path becomes.

It is truly an amazing ride :)

I mean remembering to listen to those internal bells and whistles that many of us are told to forget or ignore.

The external is what we came for, but the internal is as important and if ignored, can lead you down some very dark rabbit-holes, in my experience.

By internal, I mean things like gut-feeling, intuition, contemplation...that kind of thing. It's all very well bombing the couch and numbing your brain with TV to unwind, but that time could also be usefully spent "finding your center" (I know, I know...it sounds a bit hippyish), but just generally communicating with your 'self'.

It's only very recently I have started to do so. There is quite a clear definition between the chatter of your mind and those pearls of wisdom that derive from within, or 'souce', if you like. You will know them by how they make you feel. It's difficult to put into words, but I've not been doing it long/for a long time.

For example...when you contemplate a situation or external issue that makes you feel shitty, that shitty feeling is a communication direct from your greater being. Evaluate that emotion, mull it over for a bit. I have found that you really can pull yourself out of a pit of despair when you have to by deconstructing these bits and pieces. You don't require therapy, or counselling or anything external of yourself. I thought exactly the opposite for many years, but I'm starting to realise I was very, very wrong.

Don't misunderstand me though. Counselling can work inasmuch as it may direct you to this point for yourself. The rest of the 'magic' happens within though, imo, at least. The first step is re-familiarising yourself with 'you'. That quiet, patient voice within that has always and will always be there.

We are taught that consciousness resides in our brain, that the brain is the be all and end all.

But it isn't, consciousness resides everywhere and what you are starting to discover is that it can cause feelings all over our body, love in our heart, anger in our liver etc, the Chinese have understood this for centuries, if you are interested, then I suggest you look at Chinese medicine for a deeper understanding.

This is what I feel you mean by trusting your "gut instinct" etc.

The more our body and mind are in tune, the more content we shall be, this is another trick of the mind, it thinks it is most important, our ego runs rampant.

BUT,

Submission should still not be to either, they are just vehicles for our soul and the more in tune they are, the more the soul will communicate through us.

The Web that has no Weaver is an excellent book for understanding Chinese medicine from a Western mindset.

Yeah...my latest 'splurge' doesn't have a great deal to do with 'submission', in all honesty. I just seem to be having trouble keeping it all in so it erupts into various posts and topics.

No Problem ;)

Ok back to submission.

I agree with people that the idea of submitting to another's will is probably not the right thing to do, unless that person was as pure as the driven snow, and their aren't many of those around.

What I am talking about is submitting to the ultimate will, submitting to the idea that we aren't in control, that their is a will far greater than ours that dictates what has happened, is happening and what will happen in the future. This will in it's physical form is nothing more than cause and effect, in the spiritual form it may take on another law.

But we are not more powerful than it, we cannot alter it hence we have to submit to it, whether we like it or not.

The thought that we can alter this law puts us in opposition to it and causes suffering.

Then, as an individual, why exist at all?
Why make a decision, ever?
What satisfaction is to be found in submission?

I genuinely see no merits to it.

This is the mind making itself important again.

Without "me" there is no point in existence!

I disagree.

The mind 'making itself important' is a daft concept, imo - the self is pretty important. Without 'me', I wouldn't exist, would I. But since I do, then I take responsibility for my own choices. That's not to say there's no compromise or sacrifice, but that's not the same as succumbing to someone else's will.

Of course you would.

Imagine a person after a car accident who acquires full permanent amnesia.

The entity/personality that was their before is gone, but the self still exists.

But aren't our memories, perceived personality aspects of what construct our sense of self?

Interesting stuff btw.
