This has nothing to do with English people,it's landed gentry and the like, blind nationalism is dangerous.
I am English myself but have Scottish ancestry meaning that when all the clearances were going on my ancestors would have been living there yet a Nationalist Scottish person could easily call me for being English.
Because of the Acts of Union 1707 Scotland could no longer have their own King or Queen and were forced to have the one on the throne in London.
The Act of Union 1707 also closed the Scottish parliament of the time and for the next three hundred years, Scotland was directly governed by the Parliament of the United Kingdom, at Westminster.
If there would have been a Referendum at this time in Scotland the public would have voted against the Union i am 99% confident of.
The fact that Scotland would not be able to have their own King or Queen would make sure no Catholic ever ruled over Scotland.
The land clearances which involved aristocratic landowners forcing a significant number of people in the Scottish Highlands off the land during the 18th and 19th centuries.
1792 was called the 'Year of the Sheep' because so many sheep were put onto land in the Highlands in place of the people who had been cleared off the land.
The Sutherlands were responsible for brutal clearances between 1811 and 1820. Evictions at the rate of 2,000 families in one day were not uncommon. Many starved and froze to death where their homes had once been. The Duchess of Sutherland, on seeing the starving tenants on her husband's estate, remarked in a letter to a friend in England, "Scotch people are of happier constitution and do not fatten like the larger breed of animals."
