Now that we've de-cluttered the top of the page I was wondering if we need/want to de-clutter some more. What I'm thinking is drastically reducing the number of sub-forums that appear on the forum 'front page', by that I mean instead of :

Today's News
General
Members Chat Area
The Community Chest
Have a Laugh
Recommended Reading, Viewing and Audio
Economics / Finance / Banking
Big Brother / Government / Politics / Foreign Policy
Demonstrations / Direct Actions / Human Rights / Grass Roots Politics
Medical Establishment
Health / Nutrition / Diet / Healing
Spirituality / Religion
Survival / Local Economies / Communities
Symbolism / Subliminal Programming
Media / Celebrities / Entertainment Industry
Family Dynasties / Secret Societies
Earth Matters
Solar System / Space
History
Paranormal / Mysteries / Mythological Characters
Conspiracy/Truth Researchers and Presenters
Community Arts
Technology and Internet
Forum Projects / Meetings / Members stuff
Vent Room

these 25 categories would be sorted under the following 8 categories :

NEWS
GENERAL
FORUM/MEMBER'S
FINANCE
HEALTH
POLITICS
SCIENTIFIC & ENVIRONMENTAL
ESOTERIC KNOWLEDGE

None of the original 25 categories would be lost. E.G. Members chat, Community chest, Have a laugh, Recommended reading, listening n viewing, Forum projects/meetings/Members stuff, Community arts & Vent would all be found under the FORUM/MEMBER'S header.

Initially this thread/poll is just to gauge if people want to change it or leave it as is but feel free to post any suggestions, alterations and ideas too.

Unnecessary imo and likely to cause more clicks.
Already have the extra click from pm to recent after the last clearout. Dont really want any more tbh.

Definitely a good idea, there are far too many sub-forums for a place of this size.
But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma,
a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

Bollocks. Clicked wrong option, that no is a yes ;)

Can I suggest some work gets done on the home page, news, blog stuff (I'd be happy to help).

Relevant and recent issues aside from the forum to bring in new members :)

SR, I reset the poll as only you'd voted.

Dubs, I've not forgot you wanting the 'Recent' tab back...I'm working on doing it without there being an extra tab! :O

And these things are kind of in the pipeline, ie. we realised when we started getting guests that we've let the place go a bit! For now we've brushed it under the rug but we haven't binned owt. One step at a time!

Excellent, in the next few months I'm expecting to be without internet for a time, so if I miss it you're welcome to take any of my blog articles as you see fit and copy them for here

The Benefit Of Keeping Home Pages Simple

When it comes to home pages, there’s a lot to cram onto one page. It seems that everything the customer may ever want needs to be available on the first page they’ll see.

That’s not the way to design a home page.

Instead, the question needs to be asked about what can be left out. Good design is not when every possible feature is included; it’s when every possible feature is removed that can be.

Below are two examples that illustrate this point:

A bad home page example

YahooHome

Where is the emphasis on this page? Is there anything in particular readers are supposed to look at? Is there any element that is more important and appropriately emphasized more?

Unfortunately for Yahoo, the answer is no. Search isn’t emphasized, Yahoo sites aren’t emphasized, and news isn’t emphasized. Everything is tacked on to one page with the result being too many options.

Instead of helping customers make one decision and complete the most important action, viewers are asked to view everything at once and then decide what to do. It’s overwhelming.

A good home page example
GoogleHome

Google is the number one visited site on the internet, yet they’re still able to limit their home page to a single action: Would you like to search the internet?

How do they do it? How do they keep the home page of the number one site in the world limited to a text box and a search button?

Somehow they do, but the more important question is this: How much is this a factor in their success? Yes, they have the best search engine in the world, but they also make it stupid-easy to use. They don’t distract visitors with other options. Once you land on the site, you just have to decide one thing: What am I going to search for today?

How’s that for not giving customers too many choices?

The Google example is used as an extreme case. You should have a few text links to your most important internal content on your home page for better SEO architecture.

I'd be quite happy to do the odd Daily Mash style article, just to throw a bit of randomness in there.
But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma,
a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

to be entirely honest i only really use the recent tab so not really bothered other than to say that i would prefer vent to stay as members only - other than that happy to go along with the majority :)

I'm not proposing changing settings for what is/isn't viewable to members, just the actual layout.

I think less is best. It's like when you go to the supermarket and have 50 different choices of shampoo and conditioner and feel so overwhelmed by TOO MUCH choice that you give up and leave with none or stick to your tried and trusted like I do on here lol. As a new member I haven't even been in half of those sub forums........
