Maybe we should be petitioning our own government to address it more effectively.

They'd probably just tax us harder :hahano:

hey, i didn't sign any petition, i didn't buy any dolphin or whale meat, i don't watch the olympics, i don't have a bank account, i don't own sony nintendo prius toyota, I don't mind getting bitten and I download torrents. Gilly, you can hop on my back, I got room for you always. So you know, i can think dolphin / whaling is bad and still like japan a lot. I don't give 2 shits about olympics or petitions.
how do you eat elephants? one bite at a time. theres wars, starvation, slavery etc. the world is bad place. doing anything positive to try to save a species human or animal is commendable.
i dont think you have to worry about japan losing commercial whore event because of online petition. and if they did.. no tears.

What did I say earlier about the lesson here being about change.org and avaaz and other such petition sites?
Why the petition now on this particular subject and not something that isn't hypocritical and would actually be of some real benefit?

It is absolutely 'relevant' to point out the stupidity of a petition :)
Its how you spot these things and learn how the world works.

(This is hard work, 'cause my laptop keeps disconnecting from the internet for some reason! )

Well you said...
andyh wrote:
The important lesson to be learned here is not about the whales or the dolphins or even the petition itself tbh, but more about change.org and its principles, its like avaaz too, I also believed in them at first but quickly learned the hard way that they're basically full of shit.

There's more truth to be found on this forum here than change.org or avaaz put together. Its pointless to ignore it or pretend about these things.

...but I'm being slow-witted re what you mean exactly (not argumentative, just not sure).

You complain of these petitions never being about anything that would be of real benefit.

So do you think that the signatures on a petition can make a difference then? Because if not, then it's of no consequence.

And if that's the case, is your disliking confined to subject matter - you think more important issues should be being addressed? Or you think it's a spiteful ulterior motive (against the Japanese in this case) that leads ones like this to be set up? Or do you think it's data mining, or what?

Mr Wolf, I've signed countless petitions over the years, and I've never felt the need to look over my shoulder.

I don't see it as a double standard myself really, because if anyone had raised a petition against us hosting the Olympics on the grounds of our government's antics, we'd be cheering them on for raising awareness and taking a stand, wouldn't we? I would.

Lesley, re, "Gilly, you and anyone else is free to sign whatever you like. :) " - let's be clear that I wasn't suggesting that you have to sign it (or anyone else who doesn't wish to), but rather, arguing a case against the point raised that it perhaps shouldn't be signed on the grounds of hypocrisy specifically.

Petitions are only useful in the sense that they collect names of dissidents lol.

The only country I know where petitions actually do anything is Switzerland.

As for 'if' someone raised a petition to prevent the UK olympic bid the whole point is they did NOT :)
Why not? Is it not obvious? :D
Its called controlled opposition, it serves dual purpose, to track and manage the disgruntled crowd and at the same time supply the flase impression that democracy works. It doesn't. To paraphrase Carlin...they don't give a shit about you.

If the rest of the world had a 'democracy' of the type Switzerland has then I might consider signing a petition...any petition.

I don't know that I agree - I posted an item a while back that showed some petitions that had been successful - but I take your point.

I've been a known dissident for ages then, and nobody's dragged me away - yet! :D

Carbon offsets became policy so the petition matched the govts interests later on.

A successful petition would be one that asked for Britain to leave the EU.
Not one that got its way for some trees because it aligned with policy later on.

I do hope this is somewhat clearer now :)

Like I said before, change.org and avaaz do NOT EVER approach any taboo topics.

Can you demonstrate that this was the cause and not a correlation any more than the petition organisers can?

Put it this way, since when has the govt not done something that was purely in the interests of their policy rather than 'ours'? :)
Their policy of late is to pay the bankers by whatever means possible, if that means some extra income for selling carbon offsets and putting labels on trees then so be it.
The world is run by money, the govt has no money of its own, they take, they never give anything it is a false illusion for people to be under the impression that govt are giving them anything at all.

Exactly!
UNLESS there was a specific number of signatures that would DEFINITELY cause some action.
Switzerland is such an example, with enough signatures they can bring about a referendum and theres nothing their politicians can do to stop it.

Can you imagine such a thing in the UK? lol.....theres no way they'd let the proles have such power.

I take your point, but another recent case was the gift vouchers being accpeted by HMV receivers. HMV had announced its imminent closure and stated that it was not going to exchange vouchers for goods. This has since been overturned due to public pressure part of which was a petition.

Maybe I am being over-optimistic but I also try not to slide into complete apathy and cynicism either.

The thing to do is check for motive at all times.
The receivers for example will have primary debts to satisfy first, I would want to know where the money is coming from for it, do they have enough to pay the pensions for example? :)

The receivers remember are NOT the guys who ran the biz previously. Their motive is entirely different, the guys who have left that biz never lose.
The captains of industry never lose lol :)

As Christy says :p

It was a yorkshireman he got the song off actually...but the story is the same again and again.

Ltd...Plc people need to look up the definition of these terms. They're quite different from sole trader for example.

Corporation sole is the nasty one to look up :)

I've signed the petition against bedroom tax. If it puts me on a naughty list I don't care... I'm pretty sure I'm already on it!
