While observing sperm whales in the Azores, ecologists Alexander Wilson and Jens Krause of the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology noticed something unusual and heartwarming: a group of sperm whales adopting a deformed bottlenose dolphin.

The interaction puzzled the scientists, because sperm whales aren't known for their friendliness with other species. Are the whales protecting the dolphins from predator? Or using it to help forage for food? Wilson doesn't think so - instead, he concludes that they're friends:

“Really, it seems that, somehow, either one or both parties derive some social benefit, whether it be social play, or just some way to relax and interact with another cetacean.”

Wilson also pointed out that the dolphin’s malformed spine, similar to scoliosis, suggests he was bullied or harassed by other dolphins and sought social refuge in the group of whales.

“In dolphin groups, there are strong hierarchies, with dominant individuals and less dominant individuals. They tend to be very fast,” he said. “It just might be that this dolphin with scoliosis wasn’t as fast or was lower on the pecking order.”

He added that sperm whales may be misunderstood – perhaps they’ve just never been given a fair shot at inter-species mingling.

“It may not that sperm whales don’t normally do this type of behaviour, it may be that sperm whales don’t necessarily often encounter another species that would desire such a relationship.”

Dolphins are brutal, they bully, rape, fight. They're covered in scars from their violence. Whales have been documented torturing their prey, etc. I'm sure there are gentle whales.

like i told oi, andy... i don't think its just any single person (you, me, etc...)... i think hes tired of sitting around watching people get into disagreements and arguments instead of us all working together instead. agreeing to disagree and finding common ground instead, compromising with each other, etc...
maybe we cant change anything, but that doesnt mean we throw our hands up in the air and surrender either. it also dont mean we go after each other either, thats kinda the divide and conquer bit coming into play.

If someone disagrees with me and I agree with their point I don't assume I was wrong or in an argument/pissing contest. I'm/you lot are just constantly refining my POV.

Sometimes people make mistakes and they do have to be pointed out if they want to learn, there was no insult accompanying the pointing out, nor was there intended to be.

The important lesson to be learned here is not about the whales or the dolphins or even the petition itself tbh, but more about change.org and its principles, its like avaaz too, I also believed in them at first but quickly learned the hard way that they're basically full of shit.

There's more truth to be found on this forum here than change.org or avaaz put together. Its pointless to ignore it or pretend about these things.
