What's your opinion of this story?

Is it aimed at private individuals rather than big business?

The government has launched an advertising campaign targeting people who have been evading taxes by holding money in offshore accounts.

LINK

What's an advert gonna achieve anyway LOL

Sounds like something they thought up to appease poorer people, bullshit propaganda to me.

Hot air to please the working and middle classes, hence why its a tv ad :)

This so called tax 'evasion' is totally legal, so I fail to see what they're going to do about it. They can hardly unilaterally change the law on non-doms.

Apple have got $180 billion in non-taxable accounts. They are the world's second most profitable corporation in the world, and just overtook Coca-Cola to top the Interbrand list. They haven't paid one cent of tax on it. This is common knowledge, no-one is going to do anything.

Exactly, because its legal :D

I had to laugh when Barnfish didn't want to see the entire UK corp tax take was less than the bloody tax credits cost :)

"He said the finance ministers had also "come together to say it is not fair if big companies avoid their taxes by shifting their profits around artificially to different countries".

What a fucking cretin Osborne is,If the cunt thinks it unfair shouldn't he be changing laws to make it fairer then the dopey cunt.

I absolutely guarantee 100% that George Osborne has offshore bank accounts. One of the things that came out of the Harry Redknapp court case was that his bank account is based in Monaco:

www.theguardian.com/football/2012/jan/23...pp-tax-evasion-trial

I don't blame him for that at all, but you'd better believe coke boy will have offshore accounts.

Also, this never gets old or loses its relevance. I never tire of posting it:

If there is one thing Pompeygate taught me, it's that the offshore tax havens are like the dark web. The shit that goes through them is unfucking believeable. There is no way Osborne could touch it, even if he intended to. He would have to go for some form of ultra protectionist closed shop.

All the tax stuff is all very well and good, but Osborne has one responsibility as far as I'm concerned. He should make a speech and say: "Ladies and gentlemen. We are fucked economically. Forget all that bullshit about the deficit and growth and all that nonsense. It's not going to make a rat's arse of a difference. There is no way whatsoever we can pay our debt back, we have to default. This is going to have very serious consequences for Britain and virtually everyone living in Britain, but for most people it's the best case scenario. We have to accept this, face up to it, and work out how we're going to deal with it. And we need to this collectively, not just the government working out a method that will benefit the elite and then everyone else going along with it; everyone has to take an active part in these issues going forward, or else it will happen again."

Obviously I'm not going to hold my breath waiting to hear that, but everything else is just hot air.

There would be some immediate pain if it was done, but ironically enough it could wipe the slate clean and allow for small business to work again in the british high streets.
Its the corporations and banks who would stand to lose..who ofc the politicians work for so...

I think people just don't understand that when the newspapers report 1% growth, and so on, all that really means is that the financial sector has got bigger and Apple have sold more iPhones. It doesn't have any bearing on the real economy, the economic situation of the country, or people's lives. Until people understand that, we will just continue to get shafted.

Its not just UK money in those islands but US and Russian and Chinese money if you get my drift.
So the problem is something that can only be tackled by a credible multilateral action by several large governments and corruption would have to be gone from all of them.

Therein lies the sheer enormity of the shitstorm of a situation we are in.

A currency amnesty period would allow the large money holders to simply change the same sums to the new currency for example.
In fact, you would have to do it to them unawares too because they could just put the money into solid assets and sell it later for whatever currency they wanted.

Its one of the most glaringly amazing catch22 situations that humanity has brought upon itself with its banking regulation and property rights. There is no way out of the situation and they will lend and lend until it all collapses like a house of cards :)

I wouldn't allow a currency amnesty i would first stop any trading of any sort with the tax haven countries including imports exports.

Legit savers would having all their details in bank records in the UK so do a straight conversion.

If you had wads of cash lying around you would be fucked, break eggs to make omelets. LOL

Yeah, what I'm getting at is how would that prevent those billionaires (or perhaps even trilionaires) from buying up property in advance of that action?
Also how would it stop them from changing their money into any other currency that didn't participate in your action? :D

Its a hypothetical situation ofc but you see how this would have to be multilateral action at the same time?
