Have I just not been paying attention previously or have tsunami's become a recent 'attachment' to earthquakes? I doubt most people had even heard the word before the boxing day tsunami of 2004, that's when it seemed to appear in popular/MSM usage.

I've thought that a few times too.

I would guess these kind of statistics are only an indication of advanced technology being able to monitor them.

One commentator suggests this mimics past quakes and may be followed tomorrow with a 9.2 or not. He did (scientifically-no juju) predict this quake accurately so only time will tell. Hope it doesn't kick off.

@ Sketts....absolutely spot on......

The irony for me with this one is, I had just finished watching Could We Survive a Mega Tsunami on BBC4 and was just getting ready for bed.....well that plan went out of the window!

Thankfully this EQ didn't produce a big let alone mega tsunami......
The latest stats I can find for anyone interested are....

- 6 dead
- 13 injured
- Mass blackouts
- 300 Prisoners escaped
- 3 large fires

Continual updates here...

Massive great fuck off golf umbrella is the answer - fend off the initial deluge then use it as a coracle ;)

BTW - (Serious head on) I have a real hankering to visit the pacific coast of S America - apparently it's quite desolated and sparsely populated. Anyone been there? Is it worth going or am I having a mash potato mountain moment a la' Close Encounters.?

I've always felt drawn to S America, especially the Pacific coast.

One day maybe.

No, luckily it was not. This was in the upper part of Chile, near the coast, I Am in Santiago, the Capital. Lower down the map.

When's the SZ Chile meet up then?

Ooh!

An idea!!!

For just treble the cost of organising it yourself you can all take me and the other facilitators to Chand's meet up

We'll even have an exclusive evening where you can sit and listen to the SZ facilitators chatting shit bonged out of their heads!

:D

Hi Chand! I remembered you were from Santiago...but was still concerned. Here is a post from a fellow countryman of yours who's in the middle of it...
Hi everybody,

Since I'm from Chile I just wanted to give you some updates.

Latest confirmed deaths are 6. There was a small tsunami, but nothing big, not too much damage from that.

After the 2010 quake, a lot was done to be ready for the next one, and since it was a long time coming in the north, and there has been a los of minor quakes during these weeks, people where pretty much ready for it. 900 thousand people evacuated from the shoreline last night, and thankfully not much happened.

Now they are working on getting electricity and water up and working again.

If anything else worth mentioning happens I will keep you posted.

Hi Chandra - didn't realize you were in the quake zone. Hope it wasn't bad for you and yours. How did the coastal evacuation go? Seems they had enough time for an orderly evac. Is that true?

What is it like on the Pacific coast Chand? Are my hankerings for that coast going to be a disappointment? It's bugged me for years - the urge to go there doesn't seem logical. Help :emb:

I meant to say i was NOT in the quake Zone. Thanks Wise Haven.

No the Beach is quite pretty, this stuff ONLY happens once in a while. It's a problem for those who LIVE PERMANENTLY in front of the sea, but otherwise it is quite nice.
