US base a danger Assange warns

by: Milanda Rout
From: The Australian
October 13, 2012 12:00AM

JULIAN Assange has warned that the decision by Australia to allow US troops to be stationed in Darwin is "totally wrong" and may lead to a potential "arms race" in which China may seek to increase its military presence and intelligence-gathering in the region.

In his first interview with an Australian journalist from the Ecuadorian embassy in London, Mr Assange told National Indigenous Television's Jeremy Geia that he was not anti-American but that Australia had not helped itself in the Asia-Pacific region by allowing US troops in the country.

"I am not reactively anti American alliance, but to actually station foreign troops on Australian soil, all these bases . . . to do it in a provocative way when China is aggressively pushing its influence, it sends out all the wrong signals," he said in the interview.

"It sends out sort of an arms race as well -- 'if there is an Australian base here, we better have a Chinese base here, or we better have some other kind of base there' -- the Chinese think they need to up their patrols and up their intelligence collection in Australia . . . it's totally wrong."

The WikiLeaks founder said it was important for Australia to have powerful countries as allies but it needed medium-sized "friends" in the region as well.

Mr Assange, 41, has been holed up in the embassy since he sought refuge on June 19. He is wanted for questioning in Sweden about allegations of rape and sexual assault.

The Australian, who has denied the allegations, fears being extradited to the US from Sweden to stand trial for espionage.

"People should not think: poor Julian, stuck in the embassy. Ten days in solitary confinement, his name's been smeared all over the world. He's had an electronic manacle on his ankle for 18 months under house arrest," Mr Assange said in the interview on September 5. "Well, it is kind of grim like that but I have been having a tremendous fight and we have achieved victories that are extremely philosophically and emotionally satisfying to me.

"So I wouldn't say, not for a moment, would I have chosen to have been free and not have those victories, not for a moment."

Mr Assange told Geia he was adamant he would survive the current situation. "I don't have time to stop and reflect about how I'm feeling . . . this is the safest place for me to be right now," he said.

He said WikiLeaks could become an issue at the coming federal election and that support for his cause was as strong as ever.

"Opinion poll after opinion poll shows support for WikiLeaks . . . there's an electoral incentive for them to say 'hands off WikiLeaks'," he said.

Geia, who got the interview by "rocking up and knocking on the door", disputed claims that activist group GetUp conducted the first face-to-face interview.

"In fact, according to Assange's office I was the first journalist (from a country where English is the official language) to interview Julian Assange," he said.

The defense of Julian Assange has put their hopes in a photo, it could be the salvation of Wikileaks founder accused of sex crimes in Sweden.

In the picture you see Assange with a man and three women in a restaurant in Stockholm. One of them, who's face is blurred for legal reasons, is the one who filed the lawsuit against the Austrian sexual assault.

"Cypherpunks", the new book by Julian Assange on sale in November

The name of Julian Assange seems to be directly related to the controversy after starring one of the biggest scandals in the history of communication with the leak of thousands of confidential cables from the State Department in 2010. From the New York Times informs us of the decision to acquire publisher OR Boo "Cypherpunks", "a new book about Internet freedom and" Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks. This book was written with three other authors: Jérémie Zimmermann, activist specializing in computer cryptography, Jacob Appelbaum, spokesman for The Tor Project, a project to ensure anonymity online that we have spoken in PC and Andy Müller-Maguhn spokesman hacker club Chaos Computer Club.

The book goes on sale November 26 in paperback and also e-book. We are told, Assange noted in a statement that he wrote the book in response to concerns about control and government surveillance of the Internet. As often happens with everything he does Assange, two of these activists, in addition to Assange himself, "have been targeted by security forces as a result of their work."

The book arises from the talks in March 2012 with three prominent cypherpunks Assange, cyber or criptopunks: Andy Müller-Maguhn, Jérémie Zimmermann and Jacob Appelbaum. As highlighted in the page Wikinews, "Cypherpunk is the name of certain activists computer cryptography". The topics that revolve broadly, these conversations are related to Internet censorship, control of information by governments, the privacy of financial transactions and the monopolization of information besides what demominana an "invisible war for control of the Internet where governments face hackers and activists" in the fight for freedom of information.

These interviews are part of a series entitled "The World of Tomorrow, released as the world marked 500 days of the financial blockade of WikiLeaks website. In this series, Assange interview all kinds of experts to discuss the future of the global community. Filming for the series took place in Norfolk, UK. " As told in Wikinews:

The movement consists cypherpunks keep private information private. Müller-Maguhn, Zimmermann and Appelbaum expect to happen an economic boost that will encourage companies to develop tools that give users the ability to control your data and communication.

The interview with these activists was published in Russia Today, you can access all the episodes in Assange.RT.com or RussiaToday Youtube channel. (You can find them translated into Castilian (in part) through sites like now is the time.)

Assange's contribution was recognized with leaks in 2011 in the Walkley Awards, something like the Pulitzer prize for that profession in the United States. Among the winners of the 2011 edition was Wikileaks, awarded in the category of "most outstanding contribution to journalism." Assange received the 2009 Amnesty International UK Media Awards 2009 (New Media) for exposing extrajudicial assassinations in Kenya by distributing and publicizing the Kenya National Research Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) Kenya: The Cry of Blood - Extra Judicial Killings and Disappearances , among many other international awards.
