A pretrial hearing in the case against accused LulzSec hacker Jeremy Hammond this week ended with the 27-year-old Chicago man being told he could be sentenced to life in prison for compromising the computers of Stratfor.
Judge Loretta Preska told Hammond in a Manhattan courtroom on Tuesday that he could be sentenced to serve anywhere from 360 months-to-life if convicted on all charges relating to last year’s hack of Strategic Forecasting, or Stratfor, a global intelligence company whose servers were infiltrated by an offshoot of the hacktivist collective Anonymous.

WikiLeaks has released European Commission documents which allegedly show ‘hard-right US politicians’ orchestrated an ‘extrajudicial’ banking blockade against the whistle-blowing site.
In the heavily redacted documents, MasterCard Europe “admits” US Congressmen Joseph Lieberman and Peter T. King were involved in conversations with MasterCard in the United States, WikiLeaks said Tuesday.
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange tweeted on Tuesday "it is concerning that hard-right elements in the United States have been able to pressure VISA & MasterCard," adding “there is no sovereignty without economic sovereignty."

Joe Leiberman is a Democrat but known as a DINO and was instrumental in the creation of the Department of Homeland Security. He supported the Iraq War, the Kill Switch Bill on the internet, has called for more action on Iran (war) and is a strong supporte of Israeli foreign policy.

Deputy Dawg, 2 years ago, on CNN, where he calls for Assenge's extradition and also says the New York Times is "guilty of bad citizenship" for printing wikileaks material. When Anderson Cooper asks if the New York Times should be charged, Lieberman says that the laws need to be looked at and maybe amended. He calls this "forward thinking" so the next time something like this happens that the law is clear.

Manning’s lawyers claim he was held in maximum security in a cell so small that it was “the functional equivalent of solitary confinement." He spent 23 ½ hours confined to his 6-by-8-foot cell with no windows or natural light and was often forced to sleep naked. He was also denied a regular blanket and pillow.
Manning was also woken at 5 a.m. every morning and forced to stay awake until 10 p.m., making it difficult for him to pass the time in his closet-like cell. Prison guards checked on him every five minutes and refused to let him lie on his bed, lean against the cell wall or exercise.
Military officials have called the punishment suitable, claiming Manning posed a risk of injury to himself and others and was therefore required to remain locked up as a maximum-security detainee. But records show that psychiatrists made at least 16 official reports to military commanders that Manning was not a threat to himself or others and should therefore not have been subjected to such severe treatment.

The lad was twenty two (24 now). Barely into his twenties.

Julian Assange helped crack Victorian kid porn ring

AS a young man nearly 20 years ago, Julian Assange used his prodigious computer skills to help the Victorian police catch online pedophiles.

In previously unpublished material about Mr Assange's early life in Melbourne that was released yesterday, lawyers for the WikiLeaks founder detailed how the budding computer hacker assisted local investigators to build two child pornography cases.

The revelations came ahead of the imminent release of an explosive insider's account of Mr Assange and his WikiLeaks empire, which will go on sale next week, despite threats of legal action and the author demanding the book be recalled because of translation errors.

Mr Assange is described as a dictatorial lover of young women and an abuser of cats in Daniel Domscheit-Berg's Inside WikiLeaks: My Time With Julian Assange at the World's Most Dangerous Website.
Top 50 Tech Rec Coverage

Mr Assange last night continued his fight against extradition from Britain to Sweden on alleged sex offences. On the final day of the hearing, his barrister, Australian Geoffrey Robertson QC, attacked Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt for what he claimed was a "devastatingly prejudicial attack" against his client.

"The real evil of this outburst by the Prime Minister is not that he will have an effect on these proceedings, but in a small country it has created a toxic atmosphere," Mr Robertson said.

Mr Assange "is public enemy number one as a result of the Prime Minister's statement".

District judge Howard Riddle, who is hearing the extradition case alone, rejected Mr Robertson's attempt to have the case adjourned as a result of Mr Reinfeldt's comments.

The London hearing came as Mr Assange's mother, Christine, last night hand-delivered a letter to Kevin Rudd's office in Brisbane, in which she pleaded with the Foreign Minister to condemn the treatment of her son by Swedish authorities.

"As far as I am aware you have made no diplomatic protest to Sweden for their abuse of my son's legal and human rights, nor have you protested to the US for their incitements to kidnap and murder," Mrs Assange's letter to Mr Rudd said.

Revealing more of Mr Assange's past yesterday, his counsel, Grace Morgan, told the Victorian County Court that, "in 1993, when Mr Assange was in his early 20s, he provided assistance to investigators from the Victoria Police Child Exploitation Unit".

"My client assisted in relation to two investigations," she said. "His role was limited to providing technical advice and support, to assist in the prosecution of persons suspected of publishing and distributing child pornography on the internet. Mr Assange's participation was concluded in the mid-90s. He is not aware of the ultimate outcomes of the operations but understands his technical expertise was of value to the investigations. Mr Assange received no personal benefit from his contribution, and was pleased to be in a position to assist."

Mr Assange's role in policing pedophiles emerged after County Court judge Jeanette Morrish agreed to make public nine lines previously redacted from the transcript of a 1996 sentencing hearing for Mr Assange on computer hacking charges.

The new details about Mr Assange's past emerged as the local publisher of Mr Domscheit-Berg's book, Scribe, said 20,000 copies of the $29.99 book were delivered to booksellers this week and it was "literally too late" to stop them going on sale.

Inside WikiLeaks was first published in the author's native Germany last month. When extracts from the English translation were leaked yesterday, WikiLeaks threatened to sue Mr Domscheit-Berg, who was once one of Mr Assange's closest collaborators.

WikiLeaks claims Mr Domscheit-Berg admits in the book to sabotaging the whistleblower organisation by keeping important leaks out of Mr Assange's hands, a claim he denies.

Mr Domscheit-Berg set up the rival OpenLeaks after falling out with Mr Assange.

He threw his own spanner in the works yesterday when he claimed the English translation of his book, which was organised by US publisher Random House, contained inaccuracies.

I'm completely naive then in thinking that any civilised nation had long since put an end to such a sentence, especially in the forces... I'm truley shocked.

I'm also now wondering by what method?

Shoot him in the face?
The back of the head?
Pillow over his head whilst he sleeps?
A ride in the back of the car to the woodies?

The Army has brought new charges - including one that carries the death penalty - against Pfc. Bradley E. Manning, a former intelligence analyst accused of leaking hundreds of thousands of classified military and diplomatic documents to the anti-secrecy Web site WikiLeaks.

But prosecutors would not seek Manning's execution* if he were convicted of the capital offense of "aiding the enemy," officials said Wednesday in a statement that outlined the 22 charges.

Though the statement did not specify the enemy, Manning, 23, is accused of giving documents to WikiLeaks that related to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and that U.S. officials have asserted could put soldiers and civilians at risk.

The prosecution may well not seek execution, however that would not prevent the court martial handing down that sentence if they so desired.

As the the method of execution? I would assume lethal injection would be the most likely now but I would defer to our cousins from the former colonies on that issue.

It seems this is not an issue of making justice, it is a way of breaking Julian Assange's character. They have done this before.
Its' a chess move. Finally they will get him one way or the other.

The journalist in that interview is erin burnett. She is engaged to the executive of Citibank, David Rubulotta.
Wikileaks, the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi sent a communication to the U.S. Secretary of State and U.S. Treasury on December 22, 2009, alerting them to the fact that the investment arm of a U.S. ally, Abu Dhabi, believed it had been defrauded of $4 billion by Citigroup

CNN - Manning Story: Reporting a War Crime, "The Van Thing" - dailykos.com

You could have knocked me over with a feather that the major media was talking about the Bradley Manning trial at all, after years of being confined to the progressive Internet, but although it is important for Manning's treatment in virtual isolation be a focus, the real story is being ignored. Bradley Manning is where he is in the first place because he was reporting a war crime.

No matter what Manning's treatment, many Americans, not always the most big-hearted people, will believe Manning deserved every bit of it unless context is provided. The CNN reports on the trial which have run so far delve no deeper than his complaints about being forced to stand naked, not being allowed to sleep, and being harassed under a bogus "suicide watch" by being asked every five minutes "are you okay?"

Manning wrote to his then friend Adrian Lamo of the Wikileaks video which has since made the news:

"At first glance it was just a bunch of guys getting shot up by a helicopter...No big deal ... about two dozen more where that came from, right? But something struck me as odd with the van thing, and also the fact it was being stored in a JAG officer’s directory. So I looked into it."

Manning was talking about the now-famous video in which an American Apache helicopter crew is seen firing upon a group of Iraqi men in "New Baghdad" in 2007. Most of the public debate has since centered around the first of two attacks in the video, in which a Reuters journalist is killed.

Manning's eyes were elsewhere, and in perhaps a sad commentary on the rules of engagement at the time, accepted the first attack as "just a bunch of guys getting shot up." It was the second attack, the "van thing," which caught Manning's attention. Manning knew a war crime when he saw one.

In the second attack, unarmed men are attempting to evacuate a wounded man, an act which since the Geneva Convention of 1864 is protected [...]

In the second attack a man is seen crawling upon the ground after the first attack, when a van pulls up with men who attempt to evacuate him. The Apache gunner in his bloodlust requests and receives permission to open fire, muttering the words "just pick up a weapon," even though no weapons are anywhere visible near the crawling man. It is in this attack that two children in the van are wounded, whereupon the gunner remarks "that's what they get for bringing their kids to the battle." [...]

If it came out that Manning had been hung upside down and beaten on the soles of his feet, many Americans would conclude it was deserved given the incomplete reporting which merely mentions that Manning is accused of leaking classified documents. This may be part of it, but the fact also remains that Bradley Manning was reporting a clear war crime.
