You're probably right though dubs, chances are they're running a check. If I was them, I would. Just saying.

Someone is starting to get p'd with me........:dunno:

I feel that you have long had a grudge against the police rightly or wrongly and it has wrankled with you ever since.I have done many protests over the years and you just don't start hitting people you were being friendly with for no apparent reason. You make it sound that an order from on high was given out for the police to attack the public.

I can see why you might think this way of me Tom. There's no grudge though and no axe to grind. With regards to the second part of that, yes it really did happen just as I told it and yes I am saying that the order was given from "on high". It was surreal. Things went from jovial to chaos in the blink of an eye. I don't blame the police that were there, they were all doing the job they were asked to do. I do have issue with those that the order originated from however.

Now you see the police being attacked by the government and are dipping your toe in the water just to how strong an opinion we hold and to gauge our reaction when the boot is on the other foot.

Yes, I kind of am. I thought I'd been pretty clear that I'm looking to see how you all feel about what we are discussing.
Well Noel unfortunately there is wide spread apathy amongst the police re Winsor at the moment.I have researched Winsor 2 inparticular and have been looked at like I am a mad man by my peers at work. They just think the federation will quash it.

I think that your peers need a bit of a reality check. Relying on others to stop this juggernaut will only end in tears. If it's any consolation, most times that I talk about things like this, people look at me like I'm mad too!
Also there is no way I would engage in any sort of violent protest or be involved in any wider issues against HMG that may have the potential to kick off.I would march but only in a police federated organised one and would not want any outsiders or agitators to be involved which HMG would love. Its usually the agitators that cause any peaceful protests to lose their peacefulness. The same people who decamped from the Gypsy site to outside St Pauls for example. Its always the same faces at local protests too.
Also if I was given escort duties for the Home Secretary, Tom Winsor et al they would get the same respect( as humans in a possibly hostile environment) and professionalism and protection as the role required at the time.Thats just the way it is being a cop I am afraid.

You sound like a good and fair cop to me Tom in that case. I'll agree that agitators and Agent Provocateurs have been and still are a thorn in the side of political protest. Invariably they are extremely counter productive. I see them as playing into the hands of those who may have an interest in quashing dissent and imposing ever greater restrictions on the people who disagree with them. It's a shame that you wouldn't want the people of Britain to show solidarity with you based on the premise that some people are idiots though.

* I think Tom may be running an early version of Blind Denial V2 ;) Let's see if anyone picks up on the Agent provocateur bit*

The officers I work with do not have apathy to winsor, they fear it but lack the ability to do anything about it.
If we had some legitimate way that would work and allow us to be heard that would be great

This again is a very good reason for people to show unity as a collective rather than as isolated groups in my book. As I've said twice now, the people that have pushed Winsor on you think they have everything covered. The ONE thing we have going for us is us. If we fail to realise that, and soon, then yes we will sit by and watch our country and the world turn into something that we would not want to leave our children.
What avenues do you have left within the Police Service framework?

Simon T:
"Moaning - very traditional tool.
Reluctance - not signing up for overtime, not being able to answer the phone off duty. (several officers are constantly moaned at as they don't have their mobile on the job system, but it's their phone not the jobs)
Efficiency - instead of ignoring or fudging the stupid ideas and dictates from above you follow them to the letter, even the ones that make no sense at all.
Communication - tell members of the public why it has taken 2 hours to get to them ( we have of course been told not to do this, but I'm not sure I can be ordered to lie to the public, I only lie to them when I want to)

But I don't think anything we could do, save handing back every driving permit and firearms authoriy on the same day would get them to actually think again and we can't DI that as we have to police because we are police. When the call comes in we answer because no one else would

You may have said it in a slightly tongue in cheek way but moaning is probably a good tool for you. If you can en masse raise your voices and literally bug the hell out of those with influence, perhaps they may start to take notice. I really do mean "bug the hell" out of them though, collectively. I agree also that communicating your views to the public as a whole will be a great tool. I know that there is occasionally air time given to the PFEW etc but the media really only pays lip service to this sort of thing (I wonder why). You boys and gals interact with the public every day. That is your best opportunity. The public are not bound by the same restrictions you are and the more that understand, the more chance that they will blanket bomb letters pages, comments sections, visit MP surgeries etc. There would be no harm in giving up some off duty time to leaflet either. I've found leafletting is a fantastic tool for raising awareness IF you get the leaflet right. Straight simple nuggets of info to grab the eye rather than in depth waffle. There are plenty of things that can be done when off duty.

It is getting late in the day though isn't it. I would urge those like Tom, who would not welcome the active support of the people in any future protest to think again. I take his point that there would be those who would literally chomp the bit to get in on a Police march and cause trouble though. There'd even be some who were paid to do so.....

I think you are thinking along good lines when you mention reluctance to do overtime. The old work to rule tactic is effective. Sticking to contractual obligations and offering no more has been valuable for many. Of course there are ethical concerns for yourselves there, as long as they are respected I'd say exerting ANY pressure you can in that way is ESSENTIAL. Non compliance and non co-operation are big big weapons in your remaining arsenal. As I said before it was the Non Work days that brought down Apartheid. Literally anything you can do along those lines will exert pressure all the way up the pyramid. They are relying on you going quietly......I say don't. At least you'll have given it your best shot.

*separate post*

As an add on, back to the subject of linking up with the wider community. It's a numbers game. 20,000 police here, 30,000 nurses there, 15,000 teachers, students, etc. These aren't big enough numbers to stem the tide. Add them all up and put them in the centre of London on the same day.......now that's a voice to be reckoned with.

You may bring up the last event such as this, The Anti Poll Tax March and say "look what happened there in Trafalgar Square". At which point I'd remind you that the march itself was incredibly peaceful. The whole march was conducted in good spirit. What instigated the violence was when a small group of agitants/agent provocateurs split off and headed for Downing Street. But then that could have been contained. What caused the flare up in Trafalgar square was a decision made "on high" to force the agitants up Whitehall and into Trafalgar Square. Again a tactical bad choice by someone in an office well away from the street. One which I'd contend was intentional. You then had a million people seeing what appeared to be an army of riot Police charging them.........We all know what happened next.

My point being that it is possible for vast numbers of people to join together in solidarity and show cohesive opposition to bad policy, without it descending into an ugly, violent farce. But that certain groups may not wish that to happen. Awareness of that fact is essential if we are to contemplate banding together in such a way. Learn from history so to speak. Joining together is simply our only option at this stage, anything else will be ineffectual. We just need to apply a bit of wisdom and forethought to stop the action being used against us by the people that seek to discredit us.

Now I thought the mod, Anna32, may have jumped on me for bringing up the Poll Tax but no, here she is responding to some of the points raised
There's an interesting analogy to be made with the upcoming doctors' strike- for some services, there is really nothing you can do to make your point. Token action (a day off from minor routine procedures, an occasional march) won't make an impact. The only measures that might work would harm the general public. That's going to be counter productive, since you would completely lose all sympathy (look at how the public reacts to striking train drivers disrupting their commute, now imagine a country full of crime victims/ untreated sick people). You'd also hurt a lot of people and cause a lot of damage. Most people in these professions couldn't do that, no matter what the cost is going to be to themselves.

I agree Anna, to all intents and purposes your hands and the doctor's are tied. This is one of the reasons that I keep banging on that you need to band together with the wider opposition to this steam rollering of public opinion and common sense. It really is the ONLY option for all of us. A clear message to the yacht dwelling instigators that we have had enough.

In deed the temptation for people is to solely think about themselves and not look to the bigger picture. My heart sinks every time I read or hear a comment complaining about people striking or marching. I wish they would take their blinkers off!

I note with some irony that today Ed Milliband has had a pop at Cameron about the corruption in the coalition with regard to the influence of the corporate lobby. I also note that Alastair Campbell's diaries have now been shown to confirm that yes, Murdoch did exert influence on Tony Blair in the build up to the Iraq war. I honestly think that many many people don't pay heed. Politics goes left, right, left and nothing changes. The machine rolls on regardless. What you say in opposition will be said back to you when you're in power. It's a facade. Nothing more, nothing less. An illusion designed to fool the people into thinking that their vote matters and that they are in control.

It's time to reclaim democracy. Time for a total overhaul of a system that ushers wealth up the pyramid to the hands of a very few by ignoring the very people that create the wealth and care for the planet. I'm not an "occupier" but I can see a lot of sense in what they are saying. If you work hard and ethically then by all means have a good and comfortable lifestyle if that's what floats your boat but when things get to the level that they have, where governments are mouthpieces for the super connected corporations, things have gone too far.

I will say though that I am slightly disappointed that there are more views over there than over here. Even with our regular influx of guests. Maybe the guests are just here for gossip about the DIF?...... It also nags me a bit that a great idea put to me of doing something similar with the military, has so far not been taken up by anyone as far as I can tell. Also that when I've asked for someone to PM me their research so that I could perhaps use it at UKPoliceOnline, the reply is along the lines of google is your friend......

Maybe I should just be looking after my toms......:dunno:

Tom Sawyer
Most politicians set out with the best of intentions case in point Barak Obama but they all get sucked in.He is incredibly unpopular certainly in the Southern States and could be a one term president despite being hailed as the next Jesus christ.
With Winsor and the police I can't understand why they want to cripple us for the sake of a 1.3 billion saving. They have just pumped 134 billion into the banks and given the IMF 8 billion. So I fail to see why they are shafting us.
We have marched but this time it has had little or no impact and the whoile of Winsor 2 will be accepted next week.To be honest it's not me I am that concerned about as I have over 25 years service and no debts.I would happily go on the 25 year pension if they dropped the age you could receive it from from 50 to 45 and it was payable immeadiatly.
The people who I feel sorry for are the ones who have just a few years service inparticular those who I tutored up to 2008 who were promised one thing and are now getting something else entirely.
There have been plenty of officers who I saw joining as a lottery win and splashed the cash and have mega debts.Just what the heck are they going to do?
Alot of cops join up with existing wives and kids and then get divorced and then have more kids with a police officer.Well it's the children who will suffer in the long run.

In 2 years I feel that I will no longer be a police officer and life may be very different and I won't be on my own either.

That's a very good if rather sad post Tom, thank you.

With regard to politicians, in some ways I agree with you. There are many that come from a place of idealism and commitment. They've lived 'normal' lives and their life held views lead them to enter politics. I had the good fortune of getting acquainted with Jackie Ballard before she became an MP. A nicer and more dedicated person you couldn't meet. When she rose through the ranks she ended up having to make a choice. A choice which led her to walk away from politics....

Then we have the career politician. Those that are groomed from an early age to be politicians. The Millibands, Camerons and Cleggs. These are an altogether different beast and it is these who now rise to the 'top'. As for Obama...No-one really knows who he is do they? There's even ongoing investigations over there as to whether he's even eligible to be President! If anything he's even more of a puppet than Dubya, but I digress.

I might suggest that perhaps the reason behind the encroachment of the private sector into policing is less about saving fiat currency than it is about having corporate interest in control of certain vital areas. Also of course there will be a fresh revenue stream created for them.

On reflection I think it worth concentrating on this section of Tom's post for a bit:
I can't understand why they want to cripple us for the sake of a 1.3 billion saving. They have just pumped 134 billion into the banks and given the IMF 8 billion. So I fail to see why they are shafting us.

£100 billion or so of new fiat money for the banks. On top of the hundreds of other billions that have already been pumped in through earlier bouts of quantitative easing and bank bailouts. We are told that this money will stimulate the banks into kick-starting our economy. Now have we heard this before? What happened? Exactly, the money was swallowed by these multi national corporations. (Just as it will most likely be when the banks have to use this new injection to stay trading when the results of the Greek election hit home this week).

Who is liable for this new debt? The people of Britain. As are the people of Spain who will have to repay last week's refinancing of the weak Spanish banks....It's all repayable with interest by the people. This is what's driving the Western World's insane obsession with Austerity. We are told that we have borrowed too much and that the way to deal with it is to borrow more. Further endebting not only ourselves but our children. To what end? The Bank of England and the Federal Reserve are PRIVATE companies. Just as are ALL the central banks. We the people are not permitted to know who the stockholders in The Bank Of England are.....

REF:Bank of England Nominees Limited was granted an exemption by Edmund Dell, Secretary of State for Trade, from the disclosure requirements under Section 27(9) of the Companies Act 1976 , because, “it was considered undesirable that the disclosure requirements should apply to certain categories of shareholders.” The Bank of England is also protected by its Royal Charter status, and the Official Secrets Act."

You can bet your bottom dollar though that the same people/organizations are the major stockholders in pretty much ALL of the central banks. You can also bet that these people/organizations are also major stockholders in the super connected multi nationals. So what does this mean? It seems to mean that these banks are making money up out of thin air and then effectively lending it to themselves with interest and WE are liable for the repayments. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm all ears :)

In other words, it appears that we the people are literally being robbed blind and so are our children's children.......We are being burdened with a future of unrepayable debt and the wealth is going to the stock holders of the super connected corporations. And all the while we are being told that we have to tighten our belts have less nurses, less police and less flowers on the roundabouts....That we should pay more tax, retire later and have a crappier pension.......Bloody good plan eh!

Thank you feather. I won't deny that little bouts of activism such as this are not without risk. Also that it doesn't come at some cost to my head.
Yet, unlike some, who would encourage us all to sit back and build our castle of cabbages, I feel that I can't know what I know and think as I think without doing my level headed best to open a few thought doors in the minds of a few key people. I'm sure that anyone reading this will understand what I mean.

The thread over there now stands at a fraction shy of 400 views...:)

Bloody hell!!!

Off topic but this is the OP of another thread over there...........When you see it like this......

Following the death of a 27 year old man in Cumbria after being tasered by police news.sky.com/...rticle/16051528 I started to wonder about these devices and their deployment in the UK. I find it worrying that the powers that be seem to be thinking that tasers are the way forward as staff levels fall due to budget cuts.

Tasers are portrayed as a safe device to use and are treated by the users as such. It is not a safe device though it is merely a "less lethal" alternative to a firearm. In a three month period in the USA 27 people died after one of these devices were deployed and used against them. The company that make the device, even though they say it is safe, have advised users not to aim for the chest area. Either it is safe or it is dangerous surely.

That's some fucking effort there from a non-lethal weapon! The twats.

Anyway, noticed you/your thread had gone a bit quiet, thought you may want to use this to wake them up a bit...

Tis not a "non" lethal weapon apparently. Apparently it's a "less" lethal weapon.

After the BofE post,I've purposely left that thread alone for a few days. Give them a chance to digest the implications and maybe check a few things for themselves. The thread count HAS been rising on that thread over there in the meantime. The time for me to take things further with it is fast approaching :)

Your toms will do just fine on their own, for now.

I think possibly, people are just following what you have so eloquently put forward thus far, dubs. I know for my part, I couldn't have done it the way you have and I certainly don't think I am privy to any information that might help you in your cause, unfortunately.

Please don't stop doing what you're doing though. People are watching and taking it all in.

I'm very encouraged that them over there DO seem to be starting to take my input a bit more seriously now. Tom Sawyer for instance, started off as pretty anti dub but his last posts have been far more open and that's good. Being bizzies, hopefully they are bizzying about doing their own research :)
