Kinda like an early billionaire version of Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh. :coffee:

Not detracting from your point. Just saying.

He was a bit of a loon.

He was right though in regards to what he said about the changing economic paradigm, so yes regardless of ones opinion of him, the point still stands.

And ftr I dont regard Jimmy Goldsmith as a Glenn Beck, because in my opinion he was much higher in the food chain so to speak.

His wife was Lady Annabel, his son of course is a sitting MP, and his grandchildrens father is likely to be the next president of Pakistan.

Hehe, but not the point i was making.

I tend to listen to what high ups say, because they know what is going on, and when they say it, it often becomes so.

Still stands today imo even tho James Goldsmith is long gone. Some choose to get their info from the likes of Beck and others, but if you really want to have a fighting chance of knowing whats ahead, listen carefully to what the people in politics or who sit in the think tanks and so on are saying.

I for one will listen to pretty much anything someone like Imran Khan has to say when i get the chance, and have so ever since a fascinating interview he had in Australia with Andrew Denton, whereas Beck, i wont even watch 2 seconds. Doesnt mean i agree with what they are doing or not doing, i am just saying i listen.

Whether one likes what they are or not, for me it remains they know what is going on more than most, and will also often state their objectives or the objectives of the ruling class.

Beck is damn good at fake tears and sad faces though, i will give him that. :coffee:

What people are pissed off about is the fact that in many cases the Brits who move abroad have to prove they have jobs to go to, can pay for their own housing, have health insurance or a certain amount of savings. I don't see what's wrong with us expecting the same of people who want to come and live here?

My parents emmigrated to France, they have to have health insurance and they had to have a meeting with the mayor of the village they moved to. There are also other criteria. This is all perfectly normal over there. If I visit them and break my ankle and have to go to the French version of A&E, I still have to pay 25% of the bill, even with my EHIC card, but people come over here and get that for free. In fact, Expats even come back here to have babies. People can be as politically correct as they like, but most people who want to come to the UK aren't doing it on humaitarian grounds, it's mostly about the lifestyle and NHS. I know people spin out the tired old lines about how any of us can go and live in Poland or Romania and work or claim benefits, but lets cut the bullshit. The residents of those countries don't even want to live there and the standard of living is shit, why would any of us want to live there?

But most Romanians do indeed want to live in their own country. Almost all of the ones I knew living abroad (either here in Italy or in the UK) missed their home and wanted to return some day. Many were working for the cash (my own cleaning lady is Romanian) because wages are lower there. My dad's mates did exactly the same in Germany during the Thatcher years. I know one Romanian teacher who married a British lad and when he returned to the UK she went with him. And she still goes home as often as she can.

As for what its like over there: this is posted by a long-term teacher living and working overe there.
Pros:

- Beautiful scenery, especially in the centre and north, notably Transylvania and Bucovina.

- Loads of history, especially in Transylvania and Moldavia.

- One of the best ranges of wildlife in Europe, including wild boar, bears, wolves, deer and mountain lion, all roaming free in the more remote areas

- Vast areas of unspoilt natural beauty

- Very friendly people generally, with most under 30s being English speakers (at least a few words)

- Romanians have a strong sense of irony and self-deprecating humour

- Still pretty cheap for services, and certain commodities such as local booze

- Bucharest is OK, with a reasonable amount of things to do

- Nice weather 6 months of the year

Cons:

- Most unpopular government in the country's history, with good reason it would appear (to me as an outsider, anyway)

- Poorly maintained service infrastructure (health, education etc) due to lack of spending

- Road infrastructure is still pretty awful, but improving verrrry slowly

- Still lots of corruption

- Romanians as a people lack self-esteem

- Some people still cling to the communist-era view that money is acquired, not earned

- Goods as expensive as western Europe, while incomes certainly do not match

- Shopping not great but improving slowly

- Summers can get very hot, winters extremely cold for about 8-10 weeks a year

Thanks Mikey, but to me the cons of Romania are a deal breaker! As you said, people move out of these old Eastern Block countries because of economic reasons. The British, Spanish, French, Swedes, Danes and Germans don't generally go to live in those countries, because they are better off in their native countries.

I would like that right also.

But its a complicated issue.

If we all could just move anywhere, no doubt we would see populations grow in some places, possibly to unsustainable or problematic levels (in regards to resources and infastructure) , and dwindle in others. And i say that in regards to the current system.

The whole 'system' would have to be overhauled so that freedom of movement did not result in huge sudden changes in population densities.

And 'they' dont want to change their current system, the current system creates inequality, (and war zones) , and they know this, and that is why they know they must control borders.

Well the whole system being overhauled is I'm sure what we'd all like, allowing us all more freedoms and less economic inequality.
Given such circumstances I would say that most people would still live in or around their area of birth. Rusticity & family etc are major factors in most people's emotions. A main reason why so many currently migrate is economic and fear based (war etc). Remove those problems and migration would decrease drastically. It would still probably cause growth is some areas and the opposite in others, but that's only the same as what's happening now on a much larger scale because the economic impact and 'pull' factors of cities is huge.

This will always be 'home' to me... I'd like to live in Oz for a while but I don;t think tptb would allow me because of their economic system; which to me is like them saying 'this is our land, and you don't have the right to stay here simply because you were born somewhere else.' It's not their land. Nobody owns it. It doesn't sit right with me.

Bingo. The problem is the poverty over there. And that is not the fault of either the Romanian people or the British people.
This will probably change. I have talked to lots of folks teaching over in Poland. It is no dump and many stay on permanently.

Romania and the other Eastern European places will, with any luck, catch up economically with the rest of Western and Northern Europe.

In the meantime, shitty shameless employers are trying to drive down the wage and working conditions. And that is happening all over Europe and when I was there, in Japan too.

It is a movement which was started at he time of the Trilateral comission and clearly states in their own words that they think folks just have it too good and have too much influence in the way the world is run.

In their own words: "a program is then necessary to lower the job expectations" 1976 www.chomsky.info/books/priorities01.htm

I am sure you agree it really is not the fault of the Romanians.

The common factor is that all the systems are shit & unfair. Based on crap economic systems where people get screwed in different ways all over the world.
I don't buy the 'health tourism' angle. Mainly because a lot of the people who end up here haven't got the foggiest idea about it in the first place. & let's not forget that the whole NHS is propped up by the cheap labour of immigrants and the specialisation of many other health professionals who come from abroad.
No, most people here wouldn't want to go & work in Romania or go there and claim benefits if that were even possible. But surely that logic is leading us to a world where the only way people can move around is if all the systems in all the countries are the same...
Of course people come here in search of a better life.... the same reason why people who emigrate go in search of a better life.

No, I don't think the Romanian people or any other nation of people are to blame. That's not what I'm getting at at all. I just think we should tighten up our immigration policy, because of the economic climate. Of course, it's all by design, so that won't happen. They have engineered this all to bring down our standard of living. tbh this does piss me off, but it's understandable really. I want to have disposable income, nice food, a decent job for my son when he finishes eduction and free healthcare. These things are all important to me, it's got nothing to do with disliking people from other countries. It's about looking after what you value.

Studies into the economic impact of immigration into the UK work out around zero. It's not a case of people coming here and are therefore a drain on the economy. It works both ways. The main problem is overcrowding which is a strain on infrastructure.
For what it's worth, in the current system, I agree that there has been far too much immigration over a very short period of time.
There is the danger here that if too many people become overly concerned about it it will result in people turning against each other and going a bit right wingnutty.... maybe throwing all the immigrants out and having much stricter laws. They're certainly an easy target to blame in shitty economic times, and a lot of people feel that way already.

We should help improve those countries, but not at the detriment of our own. Unfortunately, I don't think the agenda is to improve those countries. We are being sold a lie, that our standard of living needs to go down to level the playing field, so other people's standard of living can go up. I think the idea is to just bring everyone down, so we all end up fucked.

In theory, we have enough for everyone and people should move freely. The UK mainland is a dirty overcrowded island though, how will we cope with another influx of people I wonder?

There you go again with distracting divisional bollox :)
Why does business have to all be located here?
Why does all the fishing have to be in 1 or 2 places?
Why does all the farming have to be in 1 or 2 places?

If you then open borders where do you expect people to go? :)

People go where the money is and business goes where its most profitable, its really simple stuff, no need to worry about any flag waving crap or foreigners.

Right now China has taken more work than any polish guy could ever manage and yet here you are worrying about immigrants?
You see?
You have just been absofuckinglutely skullfucked.

Actually there is a lie in that lie. There is no reason for ours to go down for theirs to go up. The reason why the rich want you to believe this the lie being told you is that they know that people will fight immigration instead of organising against their ever-decreasing salaries, longer hours and shittier conditions. Provided your banner says "Romanians Go Home" instead of "Higher Wages Lower Bonuses" we will all be collectively fucked and it will keep your non-British fellow workers from supporting us too.

That's what I said and what I was getting at. Do you really think things are going to get better though? They are just crawling further and further up our arses everyday. I still think we don't need more people in this country though, but that even extends to UK residents. We are fucked from all ways, because lowering birth rates won't solve the problem of an aging population. Meanwhile, people are working longer, so that contributes to unemployment. It's probably too late to do anything other than just hope for the best. I look back to the late 90's and up until about 2005 and I think those were good times. Nothing is meant to last though!
