I agree with the logic of that Feather - but the reality (in my experience anyway) has shown that it doesn't work.
I grew up, naively, believing that everyone is fundamentally good (thank you Hollywood propaganda) and given the opportunity will have respect and consideration for their fellow humans.
The reality is that some people act purely in self interest and don't give a f**k as long as they get gratification according to THEIR particular needs.
All we can do is mitigate that negative influence. Because THEY will never change.

What feather said re: troll pit. I'm not here to potty train ppl on how to be half decent, especially people who have shown decency when they wanted something from the community.

I refer you to my doubling of time outs.

I think ent has had the longest at 8 weeks, still not had to ban him and he still comes back.

Do you think there is much point in suspending him? We all know now he is a troll. If he wasn't he would have already learnt his lesson.

A troll pit isn't a pit that offers redemption or training - it is just containment.

You set a line and unless you have exceptional circumstances, you maintain that line otherwise the line becomes non-existent and no-one knows what is and is not acceptable.

My experience is that you encourage abuse by tacitly accepting or accommodating it.
I have no interest in that approach. It reeks of denial and complicity.
You would be as well cutting out the middleman and abusing people directly yourself rather than just being an enabler.

Containment the facilitators will have to watch over. I don't see how providing a part of the forum for ppl to smear their own faeces over helps the forum, there's a whole www for that! Easier to plonk them on the naughty step now we've got the sock issue under some level of control.

On reflection I agree with Feather, a troll pit will just bring negativity. There's no point in keeping pet trolls is there? What are they good for?

I think we should stick with oi's suggestion of longer suspensions just not in Cousin Frothy's case coz his is very clear

BT has shown that when he wants to he can be a reasoned poster and expresses himself without random outbursts.

A week on the troll step may work for him, us tolerating him to whatever degree clearly doesn't work for him or the community in general.

True^^^but some people are so way beyond redemption, ever, that the only way is the "Hanging Tree" - Does anybody real want to go that way when there is a compromise which doesn't really cross the line in the sand in real terms?

I agree, hmmmm

If nothing else it will resolve this thread for some time because I really don't want to waste any more energy on him.

I don't think a week on the naughty step is enough though. I vote for two and if he fucks about after that take his key and bin bag him.

I don't think it's a compromise that would be good for anyone concerned though, Wise.

And why's everyone agreeing with Feather, but ignored my post when I said the same thing earlier? Bastards!

OK, go for the graduated naughty stop system - but when we have this "should we ban BT" thread again I want real "I told you so" medals that I can take to the bank and cash in for beer tokens.
Either that or Smirk Points on my profile :coffee:
