Had to chuckle at Adrian Chiles using Gazza as an example of somebody who'd handled pressure well.....
obviously paid to talk before thinking.

Did he honestly say that? I only watched it on a stream so I was spared the wisdom..

What a fucking plank.
But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma,

He was talking about his playing days, but even so.... poor example!

There's always next year..

Just been watching the Arsenal-Villa game, and Villa looked pretty impressive. Sagna's fall looked pretty horrific though.
But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma,
a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

He is that.. And what is it with Belgium these days? Done fuck all for their entire history, and are now churning out potentially world class players at will.

Now that goal-line technology has been brought in there'll be a debate about using replays every week from now on; ie. dodgy penalty at the Emirates, Koscielny yellow carded, later sent-off for second yellow. People were already bringing it up on the BBC website.

It could well end up being a lot like American football in the not too distant future, especially if the authorities get their wish and phase out contact altogether.

I can see pluses and minuses to technology. On the one hand it would break the flow of the game, but the referees really do have an impossible job chasing some of the world's best athletes around a 110 yard pitch. In cricket, the umpire stands still and watches a very small playing area, and he knows exactly what's going to happen, and when it's going to happen, and there are still mistakes all the time. If you had a similar system to tennis and cricket, then the managers could challenge maybe 2 or 3 decisions per half / match, and you could very quickly say whether they were right or wrong. And no manager could ever say again that the referee's missed a blindingly obvious decision, because if it's blindingly obvious you can challenge it. I think it will happen sooner or later because managers will start whinging about it, although it will take UEFA probably 20 years to implement it.

And that's half the problem, is that a lot of the refs are middle aged men that have eaten far too many Yorkshire puddings, and don't know what it is to play football at a high level - which is why, in my opinion, refs should be ex players.

They've tried putting men on the goal line, and that doesn't seem to work, as they don't really have any authority.

But I like your idea of maybe being allowed to challenge 2-3 decisions a match, but only once the ball has gone out of play from the last phase of action.

And I think I'm right in saying (without googling it) that the technology is being implemented in the league cup this year, so that could be interesting.

Good result & belting goals from RVP & Welbeck!
Not vintage United but good start for Moyes.... be interesting to see how they fair against Chelski & Liverpool.

Decent game that, although Man U did play a bit too much like Everton have been the past few years. And Van Persie is in my fantasy football team

Still got Chelsea down to win the league though.

I didn't really notice any Everton style... high pressing game up the pitch though. It seemed a lot like last season where United would win but without a great deal of style or dominance.
