Manchester United's £696m bill: Glazers spend more on debt than players as Moyes struggles
The full extent of the rebuilding job facing David Moyes at Manchester United is borne out by the Glazer family spending more on servicing the club's debt than on new players since completing their leveraged takeover in May 2005.
In total, over £696m has gone towards interest fees, bank charges and debt repayment, with £382.9m invested in players – from the £2m signing of Edwin van der Sar a month after the takeover to the £37.1m club-record purchase of Juan Mata last month.
While United have won a Champions League and five Premier League titles under the ownership of the Florida-based family, the club have been heavily outspent by Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham in the transfer market during those nine years. Only Arsenal, of those English clubs to have competed in the Champions League during the Glazer era, have spent less than United, with £217.75m being invested in new players.
With Moyes expected to be handed in excess of £100m this summer to strengthen his squad, the failure of predecessor Alex Ferguson to plan sufficiently for the future has left the club needing to strengthen in every area of the pitch.
Nemanja Vidic's revelation last week that he will leave Old Trafford at the end of his contract this summer has accelerated the need for a commanding centre-half to arrive before next season.
But with Moyes having already identified left-back and midfield as priority areas, the lack of significant spending by Ferguson under the Glazer ownership has given his successor a list of problems in need of a solution.
