We all knew it was imminent I suppose.

I wouldn't think twice about raising my hat to him as he passed by.

BBC obituary is fairly decent tbf.

"This idea that politics is all about charisma and spin is rubbish," he said. " It is trust that matters."

Innit just Tony and isn't it exactly that which has gone from politics now?

Sad loss :(

Always worth watching him on a panel show because you knew that at some point he'd school some right wing ejit. I think I remember him owning the turd-like Otis Ferry a while back, I'll see if it's on oootube.

Back in the day I wasn't a Labour supporter-but I do recognise TB as being a very significant and important voice in worl politics
I know, it's Wiki - but a good start point for further information.

Someone else who deserves plaudits is Dennis Skinner - Outspoken, no doubt but, his relevance to bollocks ratio, has always been 9/10.
Idealist politicians are very hard to find these days - Sad, IMO - as every politician who heads to Westminster should be carrying the values and ideals of their electorate.

Sorry to hear that he's passed away. I will still never understand why he participated in the completely pointless parliamentary process for his entire life, but there you go.

Because he still believed it could be changed and repaired.

Remember he changed the peerage system of restraints himself by sheer persistence and adherence to principles.
I guess he expected the same from others.

There's nothing like living in hope...it's just extremely hard for me to understand how you could believe, given what I've observed in my lifetime, how anything good could come out of that system. That's leaving aside the fact that it's fundamentally elitist anyway, and was never intended to 'represent the people'. That should be clear based on the oath that it still sworn by every MP.

For me, when I was sitting there after decades of being a Member of Parliament, observing that poor people are worse off than they were a few decades ago, the division of wealth is more heavily ingrained in favour of the super-wealthy than ever before, that there is an ever increasing underclass, and the party of which I am still a member has completely repealed its identity, implemented some truly disgraceful policies and made some disastrous economic decisions which have only exacerbated the aforementioned processes, I would start to question why I’m still a Member of Parliament and what good it’s doing.

I understand that he still believed in the political process, I just don't understand why.

In fact, according to his Wikipedia page his said the following:
Compared to this, the pressure brought to bear in industrial disputes by the unions is minuscule. This power was revealed even more clearly in 1976 when the IMF secured cuts in our public expenditure. [...] These [four] lessons led me to the conclusion that the UK is only superficially governed by MPs and the voters who elect them. Parliamentary democracy is, in truth, little more than a means of securing a periodical change in the management team, which is then allowed to preside over a system that remains in essence intact. If the British people were ever to ask themselves what power they truly enjoyed under our political system they would be amazed to discover how little it is, and some new Chartist agitation might be born and might quickly gather momentum.
Why still be an MP then? What's the point?

What's the point?

To keep standing up and pointing to the flaws and injustices in the system so that enough may become outraged and motivated to demand changes.

You only need to look at mikey's Atlee list for evidence that changes can be made.
Unfortunately if people become complacent they will be unmade again. As we are witnessing right now.

Benn was a watchdog who barked at the interlopers and let us know OUR attention was needed.

Okay, he's got my attention. What should I do now - vote for the Labour Party (of which he was still a member)? What difference will that make?

You missed him barking at Nu Labor deciding policy based on focus groups and survey results then?
That would have been the first thing the mass could have responded to but they were flannelled and diverted and Maggie ended up claiming Nu Labor as her greatest achievement.

There is no Labour party worth the title now.

I will say to you the same as I have to all who will abandon what little voice we have remaining.
Why have you not convinced Joe Public to snatch up your better mousetrap? (Which never quite makes it to the scrutiny podium).

Is this current system cracked, peeling corrupt and abused?
Hell yes!
but I'd rather deal with a fixer-upper than a box of clouds and nails ........... 'with promise'.

I just don't believe in representative democracy at all. I've never registered to vote. I will never vote for anything other than direct democracy, or I could conceivably vote in a referendum, but I would be extremely sceptical of the reasons behind the existing political system offering a referendum, so I probably wouldn't. I've never seen any evidence that it has been worthwhile voting in my lifetime. That's it as far as I'm concerned. I think we'll have to agree to disagree, Feather!

Know where you are coming from WUB and I do agree in part, why bother with the corrupt system. I go through stages of apathy but at the end of the day not trying and giving up isn't an option. I'll probably do a none of the above at the next election...some might say a bit pointless but I couldn't sit at home and not do anything.

To me Tony Benn was someone who spoke sense and truth but that doesn't really work in today's world. Sad day, too few people in politics left like that now - Dennis Skinner and Paul Flynn my old MP spring to mind as still not following the party line - RIP Tony you will be missed.
