feather, there is only ever about 12 or 18 people ever signed into to this place at any one time, unless we have a really good night.
There's a lot of this :grouphug: a lot of this  some of this :rose: and that's great, it's good to support each other, etc. but what are people who lurk thinking? They might see us as a bunch of mates. We all pretty much get on with each other here, those very, very few of us that actually bother to sign in. Can you not see it? Can't you see how it looks?
About 170 people, more or less, don't sign in.

Irre, do you think we should be less friendly in order to encourage more posters? If so, I disagree.

If people don't have the courage to join in, it's not our fault they choose to be wall-flowers.

You / they only have to view the 'Welcome New Members' thread, to see that we greet everyone with open arms (unless they display sheer gittishness).

Ok on that basis, go look at DIF for example. Check their total membership and see how many regularly sign in and contribute.

If you're suggesting we should fight more to draw membership I can assure you of one member who is not interested in that gladiatorial spectacle and will trot off when the games begin.

The reason I like SZ is that we can have difficult discussions without dropping to that level.
I don't see that as a cosy utopia, I see it as mature.

At the risk of detracting further from this thread irre, I have no issue with you.

If I did, you’d know about it. Have you ever known me to not tell it like it is? I really don’t understand where all this is coming from and to be perfectly honest, it is boring me.

I’ve never met you in person but I like you well enough as some one I interact with on internet forum. Isn’t this all a bit child ish?

In deference to the thread I suggest you PM me if you’d like to talk about this further. I will not be discussing it any more here.

Thanks. :)

You talked about some people "chanting" clique Ab. Then you said "I'm not suggesting that applies to anyone here". Then you refered to something someone said in another thread about cliqueyness, and said it was that which you was refering to.
I'm one of two people who have openly talked about cliqueyness.

I'd rather a straight fight/debate/disagreement than a more indirect passive/aggressive thing.

That's all I'm saying :)

No that's not what I'm suggesting at all, that people should fight more

I'm saying people shouldn't be jumped upon and pushed out for saying things the majority don't like.

There's a lot of peer pressure here, a lot of effort to keep up the whole SZ "niceness" :grouphug: thing. People who don't "fit in" are excluded IMO.

The SZ feels more like a chat room these days .

You mean 'you' in the plural sense? :chuckle:

I think it is a bit cliquey and a bit of a private party. Sketti said earlier in the thread "our sanctum" oi said "our little world"...I think that's the problem right there.

You're being more annoyingly pedantic than I could ever be!

How should we refer to we? Do we have to include 'them' that have fallen by the wayside and all of 'them' that have yet to arrive?

I'm an anarchistic, 'we' are an all inclusive kinda bunch.

I'm now saying things people don't like, so it's time the start the peer pressure insult putting me back in my place ball rolling :chuckle:

Let's have a poll, if 50.1% of us agree there is no clique will that make those 50.1% a clique? And what of the excluded 49.9%?

First we're too friendly then we're insulting.

Cunts the lot of us (inc. anyone who signs up after this statement was made).

Got to disasgree with that irre.

We respect each other here and last time I looked, respecting people does not equate to being cliquey.

And as for excluding people who don't fit in... wanna give me some examples of these people please... and not ones that turned out to be cunts either :D

So then, it actually sounds like you're saying, if a member says something the majority don't like, they shouldn't voice their disagreement? Wouldn't that be clicqey, not speaking up, for fear of contradicting someone we like? Your argument is coming across as being confused and illogical, and you're also developing a habit lately of slagging this place off.

Why is that? You've posted on loads of threads about wasting too much time here (and in forum world generally). Are you looking to pick a fight so that it can be your reason for leaving? Like someone suiciding themselves by waving an unloaded gun at a US policeman?

Not too friendly oi, too cliquey :D

Sketti, are they cunts? Or are they cunts in your opinion, becaue you've decided that you personally think they're a cunt? :)

If I get called a cunt I'll retaliate and call the cunt a cunt back :D But I wouldn't just call someone a cunt to their virtual face. I think that's a bit out of order. Just giving you my honest opinion here sketti :)

I raised this as an issue in private, but I don't mind sharing it here and now, as we're all discussing it.

And do excuse me if this comes across in any way passive aggressive...

We have t&cs here, which we all agree to upon sign up. Doubtless, these would still apply for guests, but it wouldn't prevent some of that nasty stuff from spewing all over the forum in the first place, imo.

I also agree that signing up really is no big thing. To be frank, I can't see how offering guest posting will encourage anyone to sign up proper in the long-term either. Which is why I disagree with it.

It occurs to me that other, lesser sites have considered the same kind of things and have probably had very similar discussions in their infancy, re traffic and 'spicing' things up. I can understand that to a degree, particularly where revenue is an issue. But to my knowledge, that was never what this place was about.

For me, this place was always about mutual respect and adult discussion. From what I have seen so far, we all do that very well, for the most part. What "we" don't tolerate however, is petty name-calling and abuse of our members, unlike some other places.

In all honesty, this whole discussion, along with some ideas about increasing membership is what has turned me off a bit and is one of the reasons I decided I did not want to moderate here. Further more, signing into a site to see the kind of crap that used to get smeared over some other sites daily, and then having to trawl through it and remove it, is not something that particularly appeals to me.

I understand that some people like that kind of atmosphere, but it's not for me. That is why I continue to come back here, but am increasingly concerned about the tone of this place and the direction in which it could quite easily head.

I don't buy the "cliquey" argument for one second either (and no irre, I'm not having a dig at you or anyone else). When someone has signed up purely to troll and call people names in the past, we as a community have come together and dealt with it. I fail to see how this makes those that are watching and are unsure about joining up even more hesitant.

Some people just like to watch. Some like to be more vocal and have their say. This is the nature of forums. It must be stressed that this forum is already everything it could be in terms of accessibility and ease of use, imo.

Another aspect of SZ that never really sat comfortably with me is our apparent alignment with DIF. Imo, we should never have had anything to do with the place. It has certainly caused us more trouble than benefits. I think we are good enough to stand alone in that regard and attract new members on our own merit. I can understand the association somewhat in the beginning, but it just all seems a bit daft, now.

Ultimately, people will vote with their feet, as they always do. You may gain a few new posters temporarily who want to join in with the name calling and silliness, but I really do think the base of members you already have should be given some consideration too. I think it would be a real shame to lose some of the aspects of the forum as it is presently.
What we are today comes from our thoughts of yesterday, and our present thoughts build our life of tomorrow: Our life is the creation of our mind.

I am confused. Why is there pressure to increase 'traffic'? There are no advertisers to appease or profit to be made... if people come naturally thats great. If its at a snails pace whats the issue with that? A few people, myself included, are posting less at the moment for real life reasons. So what? I'm still seeing 300+ posts a day if not more...

I just dont get why there is pressure to push for more 'traffic'.

@irre, you said you want straight talking :D i find it very ironic that you say you like to make decisions quick and then get on with it tbh. Considering that what you appear to do is regularly make decisions to do something, do nothing about it and go on doing what you've always done... at the risk of you saying i am going with the clique, i think you've chatted quite a bit of shite in this thread. I still love yer online self though eh.
