So if we got rid of the market aspect of drug dealing the person in question wouldn't require a gun.

It would go a long way, i agree. Problem is that the drug situation is how it is right now, and there are people who do feel the need to defend themselves and are in real danger.

Decriminalising many drugs and removing the profit motives would reduce the need for gun ownership/use of that i am certain. But we aint there atm.

I also want to say, we see what is reported on MSM where guns and home invasions are involved, but i know a lot goes unreported also, most of the unreported would be to do with the drug trade or aspects of it.

Also i have seen first hand that making gun ownership criminal does not stop some crazy mo's from having guns...it could be argued that australias borders are well protected for example, its an island, yet there is no shortage of unregistered firearms and just like anywhere else, it doesnt take long to find one if you have the right amount of fiat paper and know who to ask.

as i said its complicated.

Its as complicated as this imho...we need to remove the NEED to bear arms, which means removing the threats.

Whole new thread for that though :D

It's doesn't have to make sense when people are used to an irrational government who will bulldoze there way over common sense every time. And, mostly, when people are afraid. If people are afraid of their kids going to school or afraid of their kids getting abducted, they will welcome something that will help ease their fears if it is presented right and the more stressful the atmosphere the easier it is to fool people.

Yes, it is a false sense of security. But so is getting strip searched or xrayed before getting on a plane [...]

And now there is a climate where Obama can actually be a hero if he doesn't touch the gun laws but helps the schools be safer at the same time. Maybe all this media brouhaha is just that to make him look like a good guy when he does not touch gun laws. [...]

I get ya. I have no objections when it comes to healthy reminders of the menace of RFIDs, I’m right there with you on that btw, even if it didn’t seem so.
I don’t like the, ala Alex Jones hysterical nonsense: oh noes, they are after our guns!, any more than I like to hear the opposite view: ban all guns: like yesterday!

To be fair, kids die everyday. They even die because of US hegemony wars on an almost daily basis too. That’s why I can’t fathom why these deaths, despite of their age, are of any more importance to those deaths of a similar age abroad...

Next.

Correct.
Just another argument for a resource based economy IMHO.

Aye, agreed. Removing the scarcity, inequality of wealth and subsequent poverty would solve the majority of humanity's problems within a couple of generations. It would then leave us better placed to fix the rest.
Me avvy says what the chances of that are though in a world where people think guns make us safe.....

Couldn't agree more :D
Majority is the important word, not all but it'd be a hell of a start.

You're right the chances are slim lol...you never know though...maybe the elite will tip the scales too far and let slip the dogs of common sense :D

When a pair of cracked-out, nothing-to-lose-jonesing-for-a-fix meth-heads find their way into the home of a single mother with children, I don't see how being a more highly mentally, emotionally or spiritually evolved individual is going to make a shits-worth of difference. Especially when they could very well be armed with (stolen?) guns themselves. But a legally obtained firearm in the hands of said single mother would go a long way towards leveling the playing field. Alarm systems DO exist, but in some cases cost more (sometimes significantly more) than a modest handgun. Not to mention that some criminals are not dissuaded in the least by the whirring sound of an alarm. If they came for business, nothing short of a well-placed bullet (from cop OR citizen) is gonna stop them from getting it done.

.

And does this single mother know how to use this here handgun? Has she spent days on the shooting range, or is she going to ineptly plant a few rounds in the skirting board.

I once read a book about Manchester gangs. I can't say if this is true, but the author claimed there had been relatively few deaths because the kids who ran round tooled up hadn't got a fucking clue about how to use a gun and kept missing when they shot at each other. They bought them for power and status but didn't realise it's not like the movies where you can pick up a gun and instantly become the Terminator.

And isn't the real question why these meth heads have nothing to lose? As Oioioi suggested, the reasons why the situation arises is surely pivotal? And that particular example is far removed from some guy going on a killing rampage - it smacks more of the poor and desperate turning on each other.
Countries full of armed homeowners nervously cradling their pistols in case the barbarians are at the gates is surely not the answer.

People are going on about the dread spectre of gun control - let's face it, in the US that is not going to happen - people will just talk about it for a few weeks - but the other side is the fear of each other, the fear that some nutcase is going to barge down the door and murder everyone. And this line of thinking wants us to live in fear of each other because 0.01% is a loon who may just lose their shit in a big way.

I know pro-gun, or pro-constitutionalists in the States like to quote the following article:

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1450338/...-since-Dunblane.html
Firearms offences more than double since Dunblane

Despite this having occurred:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firearms_(Amendment)_(No._2)_Act_1997

Talking of Switzerland, by the way, this is an interesting article:

www.swissinfo.ch/eng/business/Minimum_wa...ht.html?cid=31701888

Switzerland has a median average wage of £4,000 per month, and they're calling for a minimum wage of £2,700 per month because Swiss workers aren't all covered by collective bargaining agreements. This will make the Swiss minimum wage more than the British median average wage, in fact if you take London and the south east out of the equation, it's about 60% more than the median average wage which is little more than £20,000 per annum for most of the country.

You'll find that the vast majority of crime is financially motivated, even rape has a large aspect to it.

Market orientated crimes.

There's an argument that rape is psychologically rooted in the commodification(sp?) and exploitation of people.

There's an argument that rape is psychologically rooted in the commodification(sp?) and exploitation of people.

According to Rape Crisis
Many people believe that adult sexual violence and child sexual abuse is normally committed by a stranger. In fact, perpetrators are normally known to the victim and many are partners or family members. Rape is associated with the most severe cases of domestic violence, and is a risk factor for domestic homicide.

This would surely be prevented if there was a gun in the house...

You might think differently about it if you were female. For a woman 50% of the population are: potential nut jobs, molesters, gropers, stalkers, rapers, psychopaths, sociopaths, suffering from severe male entitlement or whatever...
...never mind 0.01% being a loon!
Hang around feminist circles, lend an ear on this issue (insecurity is a BIG issue amogst women and/or feminists) and what do you know!? A whole new world of possibly (or more like: impossibility) opens up to you. As a male, there’s at least a 50% chance you’ve been living a rather sheltered life there dude,

Who knew!?

For once staggeringly enough I disagree with dogsmilk :D

I would suggest it would be prevented if there was a safe outlet for such people to indulge their fantasies without hurting people for real.

EDIT: BTW that also means for example by not allowing the church and other such institutions to make it a taboo subject while at the same time having many of the freaks involved take part in it.
