credit is the offer of a loan against future productivity - debt is what is owed once that offer has been accepted.

Credit has been ever increasingly offered to the masses - huge amounts of credit that more often than not people are either unable to pay back or struggle to do so - particularly when the rate of interest on that credit is linked to rates set by banks or governments - i.e libor rates and mortgage interest - by fixing the rates banks more or less ensured people could not service their agreed repayments and defaulted.

Easy credit fuels consumerism without the need to address price points - it is a way of moving wealth out of the pockets of individuals and into the pockets of corporations 'enslaving' those who are silly enough to sign their future time, skills and labour over in exchange for something shiny now.

we can't blame corporations and governments entirely for this as we all have the choice whether to put that starbucks coffee and muffin on our credit card - buy yet another pair of shoes we dont need or a new ipad when our current one is perfectly functional.

we are all complicit in the system until we take responsibility for our choices and either opt out or strive for change.

I see andy the anti-semite is still refusing to answer four very basic questions.

dubs we live in a resource based economy ffs. Anyone who suggests we don't doesn't understand economics as well as they think they do and that is the crux of the problem.

I've had enough. Out.

I aint actually fond of the phrase rbe, silva. It's just a catch all phrase. We live in an economy where the fiat in your pocket decides how you live, not the available resources. There coyld be a million tons of mussels at the fish market. Aint got the fiat, you aint getting any.

And you call that an rbe?

Don't be silly innit blood. I guess yoh are refering to the fact that if resources weren't there, our economy couldn't utilize them. Which would be fair comment but that doesn't make it an rbe.

And that anti semite jibe is lame considering it has already been discussed and cleared up here.
Not like you to take the cheap shot route.

Agreed and for now, you suggest some very wise courses of action. But considering the trajectory of further deregulation, the institutions you mention will be next.

Regulation has at least stopped being loosened for the banks. As for the other institutions, those who run them and use them are the sensible ones who saw what was happening with the crash. If credit unions had an advertising budget like Wonga, Wonga would be doomed.

G'day Barnfish.

I would appreciate if you clarify this for me ...

Are you stating that one form of slavery "is far better" than another form of slavery?

... Chains of gold are still chains.

Wage slavery is a contradiction in terms and is used by those who want to drop out or are not materialistic to have a dig at people in the rat race who live in spam valley. The thing is that many in the rat race do it only for a certain period of time and there is light at the end of the tunnel for them. Many young to middle aged people work in the rat race and live in spam valley for the time it takes to pay off debts and then have a disposable income and they can start to relax and enjoy life more. Plus, whilst there may be bad parts to their working life such as a huge commute, such is balanced by living in a lovely village away from the city. Plus if one employer is crap, they cam move on. Or if one business fails, they can start again.

Meanwhile slaves live in abject poverty, are demoralised, often brutalised, ruled over, treated like scum and have no future. So yes the fictitious contradictory wage slave is way better than actual slavery.

Isn't that what the banks just did bankrupting themselves & entire economies in the process?

Yes. Meanwhile the Building Societies, credit unions and trustee savings banks did not. There is a safe and responsible way to get credit for both lender and borrower.

Let's not forget that people enslaved the muscles by taking out credit, loans and mortgages which they couldn't actually afford but were freely available.

It wasn't only the banks.

To my knowledge there has never been unregulated, unlimited credit made available to the masses.
It would radically change many people's way of life, with the freedom to exercise your potential as a creator, instead of selling your labor power to an owner, people would begin to produce for their own requirements and needs and would no longer need access to cheap consumer gadgets.

Many people would love to experiment with social cooperatives and if they produced marketable commodities why is it not feasible for this to be achieved, it is only the monopolization of wealth and ownership that procludes this potentiality.

There has, recently, here

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subprime_mortgage_crisis

The lending of money to people to buy their own homes knowing full well they would not be able to pay the money back. It was virtually unregulated, unlimited and it brought about the present crisis.

not to mention storecards, credit cards, equity loans, car loans, evil places like brighthouse, personal loans, student loans, pay day loans, all designed to seduce people into spending their future earnings, so we consume more rather then saving for 'big ticket' items. Then those debts are bought and sold and speculated on in order to create more 'wealth'.

What is worse is that cheap credit is sold to the masses as being an equalizer but it isn't - the wealthy can afford to purchase things without credit whilst the poor can't and in the case of technology so much of it is now deemed essential to modern living you are at a disadvantage if you wish to participate within the system but cannot afford it. Computers and internet access for example, a car or mobile phone. Add to that it is increasingly more difficult to live without some form of bank account.

makes me so cross.

Shall we leave it up to the OP to decide whether this is on topic or not?

Or do you get to say what is and what is not on topic, no matter how closely related to the thread title and opening post?

I am waiting for a response to a particular point I have raised, that is the topic I'm referring to. (I won't get one though, because andy has legged it). Until my point is addressed I suggest all other matters are off-topic.

lol, I went for my lunch while I waited for someone to come to the realisation that trying to defend the monetary system was futile as it hinged on every single reason why the entire 'truth scene' ever happened in the first place.
Until people address the elephant in the living room then they'll never get anywhere with any of the numerous gripes they have with the 'elite' or whatever they want to call it.
SB's topic is not just about money or work because we no longer technically have money or work, not in the way they used to be defined.
You must first define the parameters of the present system and accept what is wrong with it as is and then propose solutions to it before you can claim any high horse to whine about alternative systems.
Absolutely no-one who supports the present system seems to be aware that there are people who have the ability to create money out of thin air and by doing so inflate the money supply and thereby reduce the value of the money, they're not even aware that the cunts charge interest to 'loan' the money they have out of thin air, like it takes some kind of monumental special effort that only these special guys can do.
Until you are capable of explaining how that is a good system then please don't even try and say how work is a good thing because the reward is those very same fraud tokens. Fraud is slavery.
Until the day that you get paid in land and resources with eminent domain removed from complete title contract then you will remain a slave forever and your children and your childrens children until the end of time.
Is it serious and on topic? Urrr durhh yeah I'd fucking say so...

Thanks for posting this andyh. The irony of brainwashed slaves arguing passionately for the very system that is abusing and enslaving them would be funny if it wasn't so tragic.

What thor' said :yup:

There is no sign of a slow down in the process of deregulation and absolutely nothing in the way of reintroducing the regulation that led to this mess.

In fact lobbyists, hacks, shills and pundits are pushing for further and further deregulation and privatization.
