Look at the leopard, one of the few if not only big cats to see an increase in numbers over the last few hundred years, smaller, weaker, but quicker and more stealthy than a lion or tiger, Lions and tigers are near extinction but the weaker Leopard thrives, in that case it's survival of the stealthiest not fittest ;)

Specialization is the thing to avoid, Leopards are excellent scavengers, they can live amongst humans invisibly or in pretty much any natural terrain you can think of.

Survival of the quiet generalists is more apt ;)
