I wanted to join the army when I was younger, but my son's dad wouldn't look after him for me. In retrospect, it worked out well, because at the time we weren't really killing people and it seemed like a good way to travel, see the world and it seemed like a secure job. I'd like that part, but not the killing people bit. I think you are overlooking the plus sides for young people RA. You don't think about the bad bits when you're younger.

The plus sides are, getting fit, learning teamwork, discipline, etc. But they're outweighed by the bad sides, of which the ultimate is being killed in horrible ways.
The recruiters won't walk up to a kid outside the school and say "hey son, say, how would like to join the army?!" Then procure photographs of soldiers with their legs or heads blown off etc. :chuckle: They're bound to sell it as an adventure. Maybe young people don't think about the bad bits, because the bad bits are kept from them.

War. Conflict. Is it a fact of human existence? Why can't we just live in peace?

What would the world be like, if no nation had an army?

Why are the parents patriotic though RA?

Because they hear about girls in the middle east being executed in the street because they wanted an education.

Patriotic parents wan't the freedom to live in America and enjoy all the nature and National Parks ect....

Hearing about things like Rwanda and 1 out of 9 African kids starving to death make the US seem like a good place.

I don't have any problem with people joining the Army to travel the world and meet people.

I'm not overlooking the plus sides for young people at all, not even the slightest bit.

But when a person picks up a machine gun and shoots someone to death that's a inhumane choice.

When a person fly's a plane and drops powerful bombs that kill many people that's bad for humanity.

Simple as that....

Maybe so, but you won't find hundreds of thousands of people here in the street celebrating the diamond Jubilee.

It won't be the focal point of the Olympics over here either so it's far less demoralising since it's not in our face.

Americans didn't celebrate on the streets. They say sat at home and watched just like every other daft git in the world.

Knowing their policy of Don't Ask, Don't Tell at the time, I can imagine the US military refused his application incase he was a bit of a queen.
